(Lighthearted) Compliments which aren't really compliments

What backhanded compliments do you get?

I have had the following in the past week 😂. No idea why as all from different people.

  1. "I love your hair - I wish I had the time or the inclination to do that" (it was up in a braid because my hair is a mess and I don't earn a lot of money and can't afford to have it cut 😂). Compliment came from someone at work who earns about 5 x my FT salary fwiw

  2. another work one "You're so lucky - I wish I had time for a lunchbreak" 🙄😂. I responded to this one later in the day by offering to cover for half an hour everyday and just doing my work at her desk (her job is one where you have to sit there in case customers come in, but I wouldn't have to do her work iyswim). She hit the roof and said she prefers not to have a lunchbreak...um...Confused

  3. this one was a weird one and you'd need the context to get it maybe... but, from family member hearing that I finish work in time to collect my kids from school "you are so lucky - you have the perfect life" (I won't go into it, but I very clearly don't 😂)

Not sure why I've got so many this week, but thought I'd share and see what other backhanded compliments people get...or maybe I'm the only one #blessed Wink

@AsIfIWish you sound really nice! I'd be happy to be told those things. For me it often does literally mean weight gain as I'm in recovery for ED, so I need to get used to taking it in the good spirit people like you intend it! And also see that weight gain can be positive X

Ah, never mind, you still look good in your clothes.

Both from my mum.

Oh, you look the biggest you ever have! But you look well for it!

This was on the way to a wedding where I'd dressed up nicely which I rarely do and actually felt pretty good about myself.

Also my mum (obviously more recently) - oh you look like you've lost weight! You look great!

I have a chronic condition that causes muscle wastage which she's well aware of. Hence the weight loss.

I've only ever fluctuated between an 8 and a 12. Don't know why she's so fixated on it!

When my first marriage broke down, a friend said, "You'll be married again in no time." If i'd thought this was because I looked like a good catch, she brought me down to earth by adding, "You're not fussy."

(I was quite fussy, I just didn't have "six figure salary" as a non-negotiable.)

Yes I'm never sure that's exactly a compliment when people say 'it's very you' !

My sister says ‘I can definitely see you wearing it’ under tone - I would never wear it 😂 also manages to avoid saying that would look great on you! 😂😂
