Does anyone do the food shop exclusively in M&S or Waitrose?

Sadly, no. Ocado doesn't deliver to my northern town 🙁

ssd · 29/09/2024 20:45

I use ocado.

Disagree that the branded stuff costs more. The knot stockpots mentioned upthread are the same price, £2.50 not £3.20.
They price match most stuff with tesco so this isn't where the cost difference is.

They are more expensive because there isn't the same amount of choice as the big supermarkets. You aren't going to get a can of beans for 40p. You'll pay at least 10p more on all of the basics which adds up.

For me though, I'd rather pay a few £ extra as I don't have time to go and do a big supermarket shop. There's always deliveries available at reasonable times, never get any subs, quality is good, makes the extra worth it.

Goodness no, send the butler to Fortnum’s.

I’m on Guernsey so often do - I also pop into the Co-op🥺

All supermarkets have a shopping basket price where every day stuff is the same price as other supermakets. Like your bread, butter, eggs, cheddar etc. All SMs agree on the same price for these items. Every other t hing can vary

We no longer live in the UK, but always shopped at Waitrose when we did. I sometimes think the closure of our local branch contributed to our decision to leave.

Femme2804 · 29/09/2024 23:25

Yes waitrose and m&s only. Mostly waitrose. £250-£300 per week for 5 people. 3 adults 2 chidren

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 29/09/2024 23:31

M&S for fruit and veg (never seen anywhere to beat their quality - not even our local farm shops).

Waitrose for a quick shop for other stuff (except meat and fish - we have a first rate butcher and fishmonger near us).

Sainsbury's home delivery for major shops inc non-food items.

GU24Mum · 29/09/2024 23:38

We used to do most of our weekly shopping in M&S partly as we combined it with some family stuff. I still think their fruit and veg and choice of things like prepared salads js great and love some other things but the meat in some of the ready meals is much worse. They've also redesigned our local quite large one so things are really badly laid out and it's strangely dark all the time. I prefe using an actual fill with a person: went about 10 days ago one evening and everything was unmanned. I could have made a fuss but felt pretty unwell so ended up just walking out.

We use Waitrose and Sainsburys. Some Tescos near us are fine but some never have what I'm looking for. Bulk items tend to come from Costco or wherever has an offer.

Copperoliverbear · 29/09/2024 23:50

Yes shop in both weekly, if you shop around a lot of the stuff in both can be cheap.

@NellGB - I never get online shopping for Christmas and I never struggle in the stores.

Maybe because we shop at Waitrose? But we buy lots of things in advance and just add fresh stuff for 3 days on the 22nd/23rd.

@reluctantbrit It’s not the availability of products that worries me. It’s the physically going to a shop. I’ve not been in a supermarket for several years! And I’m not sure Christmas is the time to try…

Our big shop is from waitrose I often. Top up from M&S. As its our closest

I also go to aldi lidl and Sainsbury. But big shop I'd Waitrose. I find the quality is better so we use less abd it means we spend the same with less wastage.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 30/09/2024 01:41

M&S is cheaper than Morrisons and on par price wise with Sainsbury's.
I shop at Sainsbury's and M&S for my food shop every week .

OneLoyalGreyFish · 30/09/2024 01:55

We alternate between Ocado and Waitrose for grocery deliveries, we have a midweek pass for Ocado for free delivery Tues/Wed/Thurs. But we only get 2 or sometimes 3 deliveries a month anyway. I hate grocery shopping and always used to spend more in store at Sainsbury’s etc. We get a Sainsbury’s delivery maybe every 3 months. We tend to look out for offers on our regular purchases and go with whoever is cheaper that shop. I also have a John Lewis credit card so put all spending on that and pay it off in full each month, but collect points towards Waitrose/JL vouchers, get extra points on Waitrose shopping.
We have every supermarket within a short drive near us, so use Sainsbury’s Local and M&S Food for too up shopping like bread and milk.
There’s just the two of us, recently retired and we don’t have to watch too much what we’re spending.

Nat6999 · 30/09/2024 01:56

I shop at Ocado but buy many M & S products, it's so much easier than going to the shop even though I have a Simply M & S food shop 5 minutes away, the only things I miss are getting stuff from the bakery.

wobblyweasel · 30/09/2024 02:12

I order my monthly shopping from Waitrose, and get top up bits from Sainsbury's or Tesco.

Yes, that I can understand.

It's too early as my slot is next Sunday, but at the bottom, they are called flash sales. On Saturday afternoon there will be loads of short dates

Edited

Thank you to the thread for mentioning Ocado. I can’t remember when I last used them, but it must have been a while as I managed to sign up yesterday as a new member. That’s given me 20% off my first order (up to £20 in total) and free delivery for 3 months.

I’m amused to have a confirmation email from the delivery driver, giving me his name and saying he’ll be driving the Cabbage van. It’s impressive that the receipt is divided into sections saying when each item has to be used by as well as fridge, cupboard, freezer etc.

I was offered the flash sales (40% off) but there wasn’t anything I wanted: if I’d been shopping for meat the offers would have been tempting.

You say on Saturday afternoon there will be lots of short dates - does that mean it’s best to arrange deliveries for a Sunday?
