This is my dream, if i win the lottery.
Between them there is so much choice and lovely food.

I can dream!

In Guernsey I often did! Waitrose was the biggest chain supermarket.

I’m on Guernsey so often do - I also pop into the Co-op🥺

Neither on a regular basis. I go to Waitrose because their budget range is really good and their cupboard basics like herbs, spices, stocks etc are very good. M&S do the best cakes and baked beans. They also do a delicious p of sh macaroni cheese. Their pizza range has gonedownhill, but I like their own brand lagers. For a treat I buy their fresh crusty bread but yikes it's pricey. Sainsbury's I like because it's near me, but it can be as expensive as Waitrose sometimes, and they are always short of something. But I've sold my soul to Nectar points, and feel obliged to still go there. I no I'm being played, but I still participate in it.

avocadotofu · 29/09/2024 17:36

Yes we get a weekly Waitrose delivery. I don't really know how it compares to other supermarkets. We like the quality/ethicality and we're fortunate enough not to need to worry too much about what we spend on groceries. So, it works for us.

If you’re only trying to buy the cheapest sure, if you’re benchmarking quality there isn’t a huge difference.

The cheapest value range from Asda is a lot worst than the M&S own brand in many cases.

Well the OP acknowledges that Waitrose and Ocado are better. That’s why she would like to shop there. The issue is she can’t afford it but people are continuing to tell her it will cost the same. No it won’t!

Westfacing · 29/09/2024 17:38

Yes M&S and Waitrose if shopping in person, and Ocado for online deliveries.

SpyOfHut6 · 29/09/2024 17:41

Bananas are cheaper at M&S plus all the veg on the market stalls. Their basic brown sliced loaf is 75p. I don’t buy much bread so have never bought it but it seems cheap. Basmati rice is £1.90 a kilo, Greek yoghurt is less than £2 a kilo. Baked beans are cheap and really nice.

Ocado charge more for M&S food than in M&S. I’ve given up on Ocado deliveries, too many substitutions whereas I never have any at Waitrose. Literally never.

I have a weekly delivery from Waitrose and top up at M&S if I need to.

DillDanding · 29/09/2024 17:42

We do all our food shopping at M&S and the odd trip to Waitrose for more unusual ingredients. I don’t think M&S is expensive and the quality is always good.

I used to (reluctantly) go to Tesco for things like washing capsules and dishwasher tablets, but now I just order them from Amazon.

It's too early as my slot is next Sunday, but at the bottom, they are called flash sales. On Saturday afternoon there will be loads of short dates

Edited

oh are those the flash sales? I must look. I normally get my orders mid week so maybe there aren't so many

Try putting your shop into the various online retailers and you’ll soon see how expensive Ocado and Waitrose are. They charge significantly more on certain branded items eg Knorr Stock Pots 8 pack are £3.20 v £2.50 at Sainsbury’s.

Who buys stockpots? Waitrose is only more expensive if you buy branded products like that

Oh obviously no one which is why they’re available in every supermarket going even Aldi and Lidl

Resorting to sarcasm?
people complaining about costs often buy completely unnecessary stuff like stockpots. You are paying for convenience

Panicmode1 · 29/09/2024 17:50

I shopped at Ocado from when they started until the switch to M&S. I swapped because I didn't feel the choice was as good as it had been before, and they kept the price the same for less - ie 2 peppers for 3 previously. I've done a weekly shop with Waitrose ever since, with the odd trip to Lidl for their low GI bread. I'm sure we could spend less but the quality and animal welfare standards are better than other options.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 29/09/2024 17:52

I could do it at Waitrose easily and did for years, as the things I largely bought (ingredients, basically) were no more expensive/frequently cheaper than Sainsbury's and nowhere else had the things I wanted - or they turned mouldy by the time I got them through the front door.

StarDolphins · 29/09/2024 17:59

I get all my food in Waitrose (sometimes Ocado for M&S) but pet food online.

CeeJay81 · 29/09/2024 18:10

No because even if I could afford it there is no Waitrose or Ocade here and you can't get everything at M&S. Although maybe I'd move of I won the lottery lol

I’m not complaining about the cost. I am explaining that it’s more expensive. I like going to Waitrose. I don’t kid myself it costs the same.

HarrietBond · 29/09/2024 18:28

The cost of our basic food shop halved when we moved from Waitrose to Aldi. And we buy decent quality stuff.

Oneblindmouse · 29/09/2024 18:53

I buy fruit and veg from M & S. They sell single decent size onions for 25p each. A pack of 3 in most other shops is over £1, and I don't usually need 3 at a time. Living alone it's good to be able to buy single items or small quantities. Their bananas are much better than most other supermarkets and all fruit and veg lasts longer. Their milk is the same price as other supermarkets too. I can also walk to M &S.
There is no Waitrose or Booths anywhere near me. The rest of my shopping I get from Asda as there is one of the huge ones a short bus ride away. It is really well stocked with lots of choice; unlike the smaller one near home.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 29/09/2024 19:34

I use Waitrose for the regular grocery delivery, and then my local M&S food store for any top-ups, things I’ve forgotten ir things I fancy. Except wine - I don’t like their selection of wine much. Of course the convenience of all those lovely things costs money, but for fresh I think the prices are very reasonable, and while their selection can be limited the quality is general good. But, I tend not to buy ready meals / processed food in large quantities - I’m sure if I did M&S would be an expensive way of doing it!

LoobyDoop2 · 29/09/2024 19:55

I used to until prices went crazy. Now I go to Aldi first and get what I can there, and go to Waitrose for the things Aldi doesn’t have, or that are worth paying more for.

LBOCS2 · 29/09/2024 20:02

We get deliveries from Ocado and do top ups at Waitrose as it's our local shop (easy walking distance). We're mostly an ingredients family, so we don't see the difference so much in branded goods - it's not what forms part of our usual shop. We spend about £200 a week for the four of us.

Sologurn · 29/09/2024 20:07

I do, well Ocado. I'm not rich at all. It's cheaper than Sainsbury's and I don't like Tesco or Asda stuff . I look for offers and use a lot of the basic own brand which (for me) is better quality than the other one brand stuff

Babyenroute · 29/09/2024 20:10

Waitrose is my main supermarket but primarily because it's the only big one near us so actually works out cheaper than going to smaller express shops. I really should order kitchen staples in a bulk delivery though

Don't find M&S/Waitrose anything special.. I much prefer home cooked food.. But whole Foods/Planet Organic.. now we're talking.

badgerpatrol · 29/09/2024 20:28

I'm not rich but I pretty much buy everything from M&S either in store - lots of yellow stickers with real discounts if I'm lucky (rather than 9p off a massive tub of coleslaw which must be eaten that day which I've seen at Asda!) Or through Ocado.

Waitrose website is so slow and they substitute so badly where I live so when Ocado switched I got used to M&S which I always thought was over-priced, and worse, over packaged but I don't notice that anymore and packaging is getting more recyclable.
I do think things like fruit and veg are better at Marks, and as I buy lots of ready meals I'd rather buy the best I can because I know my diet isn't ideal at the moment.

I just can afford it, only me & a toddler, I save money in other areas of my life, I don't get takeaway deliveries ever for example. Food is a source of comfort (not in a bad way) to me and I am very time/energy poor so unfortunately I do buy convenience things like fresh soups that I would have previously made myself. If I'm having simple bread/soup/cheese/olives for lunch I want it to be the nicest I can have from a supermarket without going for luxury deli brands.

I don't eat much meat/fish but if I do I want the higher welfare stuff and I think M&S/Waitrose reliability stock those.
