This is my dream, if i win the lottery.
Between them there is so much choice and lovely food.

I can dream!

They’re both definitely more expensive than Lidl or Aldi, don’t know about the others. Waitrose and M&S both also sell lots of non-UPF convenience foods such as breads though, and generally have a much better choice of cheeses and coffee beans.

rumblegrumble · 29/09/2024 15:48

I mostly shop at Waitrose, though get my meat from the butcher and some other bits from the farm shop. Used to do my main shop at Tesco and haven't noticed it costing any more at Waitrose.

Day99 · 29/09/2024 15:49

Yes, waitrose mainly with occasional Ocado delivery and popping in to M&S sometimes. I like to have a look around other supermarkets, maybe few times a year but mainly because they are not near by. I don't really do takeaway, so I don't feel my overall spend of food is too high (apart from the occasional dinners out).

BellaBlythe · 29/09/2024 15:50

Meat from a local butcher, and chocolate bars from Lidl. Sainsbury is the only supermarket that is easy to get at and it is not big. Wine from Majestic.
Some speciality meats from Lidl at good prices, like goose at Christmas.
After roadworks are finished I shall use M&S Food store more.

SparrowFeet · 29/09/2024 15:51

Well it depends doesn't it. Ocado price matches Tesco so it isn't dearer. Fish and meat is only more expensive if you're buying the basic stuff from other supermarkets. If you prefer to buy higher welfare then it's about the same price.

Kinngfisher · 29/09/2024 15:52

Yes, Waitrose & M&S. Only use the local supermarket (Sainsbos) in an emergency.

I shop at m&s and booths usually with an occasional Waitrose shop, they don’t work out much more expensive than other supermarkets for me, especially for the quality, but it could depend on what kind of things you buy as well as things like family size and pets as to whether that would be the same for you.

oh Booths....shopping in Booths used to be my holiday treat (I live in the South)

Yes- Ocado with a lot of M&S branded products in it.

M&S have a lovely range of laundry and cleaning products for the PPs saying that they don’t. I buy a lavender scented laundry wash that smells divine.

We had a food delivery this morning from Ocado and packets have shrunk massively and even then are not filled up more than half. That’s my main gripe. I love the quality/luxury branding.

ETA - I have stopped getting any comms from Ocado following my shop to say it was cheaper than Tesco or more expensive than Tesco so here’s a voucher for the difference. Not since July time at least.

I already have 2 Ocado Christmas slots booked and ready to go.

Doggymummar · 29/09/2024 15:54

I find Ocado no more expensive than Tesco, and often get a refund from the price match system. We spend about £200 a week for two adults but that includes my partner's cigarettes which are £85 for 100. I don't buy meat there apart from the half price yellow sticker bargains which today I got a load of Tom Kerridge meals at 60pc off as they are going out of date. They went straight in the freezer. Also loads of yellow sticker mushrooms and tomatoes, will be making soup tomorrow 😋. Meat we get delivered monthly in subscription. Also had half price bread today. Shampoo was all half price and same with dishwasher tablets, rinse aid and laundry detergent. I ordered yesterday for delivery today, and often order again midweek to see what yellow sticker items they have, last week was monkfish which I wouldn't afford ordinarily and Magnums which are a treat.

godmum56 · 29/09/2024 15:55

Ocado mainly and my local pop to is a Waitrose or Lidl.

Chateauneufdu · 29/09/2024 15:56

not enough choice m&s , so many ready meals

ElsaLion · 29/09/2024 15:56

We buy most of our fruit and meat, cheese, bread and dessert items from Waitrose, but buy household essentials and veg from Aldi. As others have said, combining the shops is cheaper than when we used to shop solely at Sainsbury's.

Alicana · 29/09/2024 15:56

I have a weekly delivery from Waitrose. I don’t find it expensive. I was out of town a few weeks ago and went in a large Sainsbury’s and ended up spending loads more than I usually would. This could be down to picking up random things, but I found they had little choice in meat (we don’t eat much, but I like to buy free range/organic), and their fish selection was awful.

SaintCrostaOfMollica · 29/09/2024 15:57

I do think M&S are overrated while Waitrose is underrated!

can I ask how you get yellow sticker in ocado?

RosesAndHellebores · 29/09/2024 15:59

Sometimes for speed I do a small weekly shop at Waitrose including a bit of cleaning stuff, cereal, bread, milk, tonic, fruit, veg, meat, fish. I reckon it's about £30 more than Tesco/Sainsburys.

If I 've time or am entertaining I prefer Waitrose meat and fish and their smoked salmon is ace. M&S for chicken and pre prepped veg dishes. And Christmas. Nowadays I like an easy Christmas!

SaintCrostaOfMollica · 29/09/2024 15:23

Yes, I only ever shop at Waitrose or Ocado. I’m far from rich, it’s just that M&S and Waitrose were the only two shops within walking distance where I used to live.

Infinitely prefer Waitrose but Ocado make it so easy for home deliveries by still using bags. I only spend the minimum £40 each week and every five weeks or so I skip a week and use up the freezer and pantry stuff.

I'd love to know what you eat to only spend £40 a week at Ocado. I budget £150 a week for two of us and struggle at that. It does include 2/3 bottles of wine, all household products and we both take packed lunch to work every day for that. wine alone come to around £30.

I cook things like spag bol, chilli, steak and chips, mushroom pasta or risotto, chicken casserole and veg, quiche with potatoes and salad, roast chicken dinner, haddock with mash and parsley sauce and peas, chicken curry, fresh tomato pasta, souvlaki and greek salad, paella etc. I buy cheese, ham, tuna for sarnies, yoghurts, eggs, plenty of fruit for breakfast, bread milk tea coffee etc. we often eat leftovers for lunch.

kitsuneghost · 29/09/2024 16:02

I would struggle to get a full shop.
Might get some ingredients but the chance of them having all I need in 1 shop at 1 time is fairly low.
Find the same with Lidl and Aldi.

They are. 'I like their xxx' shops

godmum56 · 29/09/2024 15:58

can I ask how you get yellow sticker in ocado?

When you check out is shows you pages of short date items, just stickem in your basket. I had a few substitutions today the beef dishes weren't available, but the substitutions were acceptable

reluctantbrit · 29/09/2024 16:02

We shop at Waitrose because it's the nearest for us and I prefer the quality of fruit, veg and meat to others.

I get some things from Sainsbury like a non-alcoholic cider Waitrose doesn't stock and they have sometimes Nectar price offers for things I auto-buy and I will stock up on those.

I once did a trial, checked my Waitrose essentials like pasta, flour, eggs, sugar, some brands for pantry shelf life against Tesco and Sainsbury and without offers, they weren't more expensive.

LoserWinner · 29/09/2024 16:03

I shop mainly at Waitrose, but only because it’s the closest and I don’t have a car. There is a Sainsbury’s within walking distance, but it’s a badly run store and the quality of fresh fruit, veg, meat, fish and dairy is dreadful - short use-by dates and stored badly so things spoil even before use-by dates. I’m only feeding myself, so I really need food to last more than 24 hrs in the fridge. The best value is a local independent fruit and veg place where I can buy, for example, a single carrot, two tomatoes and a chilli for a few pence, and they sell the most divine baklava by weight if I want a special treat.

DannSindWirHelden · 29/09/2024 15:06

M&S would be really expensive and tricky for laundry liquid, cat litter, shampoo etc et but a large Waitrose stocks everything you'd need I think. It would be more expensive than Asda but not massively so.

M&S sell all these things!

Saucisses · 29/09/2024 16:05

We do our family grocery shop at Waitrose. A weekly delivery. It is lovely. There is a very wide range and the quality is excellent. The animal welfare and social responsibility element is important to me and I'm happy to pay more for that.

However, we use the local farm shop for most of our meat, sourdough bread and some deli items. Local fishmonger for fresh fish. We also use our local refill store for some dried goods and cleaning products so we don't waste plastic.

While Waitrose is fab and by far my favourite supermarket, I do think it's important to support local businesses too.

I don't go into larger Tescos etc. unless I really have to as I find it a completely depressing experience. I had to nip in for an emergency lunch a couple weeks ago and found the piped music, Christmas chocolates and lack of choice and quality horrible.

WeRateSquirrels · 29/09/2024 16:06

Ocado mainly but if we do go to a shop it’s Waitrose. I think M & S food is very overrated - preferred it when Ocado were partnered with Waitrose. Fruit and veg we get from Riverford Organic.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 29/09/2024 16:07

Waitrose, yes. It probably is more expensive than the mid or lower end supermarkets, but we are fortunate to be in a position where we can make that choice. I much prefer the shopping experience.

My local Waitrose store is much cleaner, quieter, less busy, has wider aisles and less harassed staff than the other supermarket offerings (we have most of the others, excluding Booths). We do have M&S food branches one large, one medium, but the stock just isn't comprehensive enough to cover everything required.
