This is my dream, if i win the lottery.
Between them there is so much choice and lovely food.

I can dream!

I agree with this. We haven’t had a Christmas supermarket delivery in years. We get specific things delivered from butchers etc and then just go to the supermarket to buy the rest. I’ve never seen a supermarket massively busy or out of stock, although if I really wanted a specific thing and nothing else would do, I’d make sure I got that in advance and froze it if necessary.

GiantHornets · 29/09/2024 16:50

I won’t use Ocado but I don’t rate Marks either.
.
We get a weekly delivery from Waitrose and find it excellent value for money with quality products. Waitrose Essentials are comparable to own brands from other supermarkets. We don’t buy branded products either, just meat & fish which DH cooks from scratch.
We get a weekly delivery which cuts out impulse buys as well as saving time and petrol costs getting there.

Mostly Ocado. We don't have Waitrose and M&S on its own doesn't cover all bases as our local one is too small. What little extra we spend at Ocado is worth it for quality and longevity of fresh produce. I was sick of throwing stuff away from other supermarkets because it had gone off really quickly.

I only shop at Waitrose with an occasional trip to M&S. You couldn't really do a "proper" shop at M&S as they don't sell other brands and wouldn't be very practical for laundry stuff etc. There's only two of us though - and the cat. I don't think I could afford it for a family of 5.

M&S do sell other brands these days.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/09/2024 16:54

DH does our shopping. A lot of our 'main meal' food is from Waitrose or M&S (esp fish, meat, and any ready meals eg curry). Some of the fruit and veg too. Other stuff - milk, yogurt, tinned goods etc used to mainly be Asda but that's got a bit crap for some things so more often Lidl now. I'm not sure where he's getting cleaning products from now, I think the last lot were probably B&M.

Babush · 29/09/2024 17:00

Try putting your shop into the various online retailers and you’ll soon see how expensive Ocado and Waitrose are. They charge significantly more on certain branded items eg Knorr Stock Pots 8 pack are £3.20 v £2.50 at Sainsbury’s.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 29/09/2024 17:02

I food shop in M&S most weeks, my husband does the Aldi and Tesco run for milk, dog treats, his cheese, his ham, the ready meals he likes.

I think that M&S has become much cheaper IF you're not buying things like ready-made sandwiches or sushi or deli bakery or anything like that. The ready meals that I would eat are from M&S, they have a Tandoori Chicken in the healthy aisls but I also like Chicken Fettucini and the standard chilled ready-meals are 3 for £9. Great for the freezer and taste better than any other (not so much salt?). Different tastes I suppose.

If you whip round with a list and stick to it then I think a shop is comparable with any other but if you wander around, gazing at stuff and chucking it in your trolley then yes, you'll be spending north of £80 without really trying.

Waitrose I no longer go in, I don't like it. I used to though.

Babush · 29/09/2024 17:04

Asda have anchovies at 75p a tin. Cheapest on Ocado £2.10. These are big price differences.

SweetLining · 29/09/2024 17:06

I shop mostly at Waitrose as the quality is really good and I don't find it more expensive than elsewhere. Actually better value - berries from Morrisons may be 30p cheaper but they'll be mouldy quickly.

Verite1 · 29/09/2024 17:06

Well I do Ocado which is M and S and Ocado own brand. Much preferred it when Ocado paired with Waitrose though. If I can’t get an Ocado delivery, I will use Waitrose instead.

When you check out is shows you pages of short date items, just stickem in your basket. I had a few substitutions today the beef dishes weren't available, but the substitutions were acceptable

wow I don't get that!!

AngelinaFibres · 29/09/2024 17:09

Main shop at waitrose. M and S for some things some weeks. I used to be poor. I'm not now and I intend to squeeze pleasure out of every aspect of my life. I'm retired so I have time to food shop in person.

OhHeyOwlFace · 29/09/2024 17:09

Yes, exclusively in Waitrose. I don't find it any more expensive than anywhere else tbh. Not really

JudgieJudie · 29/09/2024 17:09

MeMyCatsAndI · 29/09/2024 15:03

They're actually cheaper than some other supermarkets.

Can you tell me what, because apart from the milk, bread, butter etc I can't see anything cheaper?

Babush · 29/09/2024 17:12

Waitrose IS more expensive. You compare the prices. If you don’t have to worry about £10-20 a week extra and you enjoy shopping there that’s great but for people who do need to worry about every pound it’s really not helpful to keep saying it costs the same!

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 29/09/2024 17:18

For my consumption it is 100% M&S, for the dogs and the cats, cleaning stuff and loo roll etc. it is ASDA only because I work in one.
before that it would be Morrisons as it's the nearest and dd had her 1st part time job in it.
prior to that it was Sainsburys as it is next door to M&S

wow I don't get that!!

It's too early as my slot is next Sunday, but at the bottom, they are called flash sales. On Saturday afternoon there will be loads of short dates

lopdoo · 29/09/2024 15:31

They're not cheaper despite what people insist on these threads. We switched to Ocado for a couple months last year and whilst yes the basics are comparably priced, the expense comes with the lack of own brand choices. I can't quite remember what I struggled to get exactly but there are certain things I just don't feel compelled to buy brand name, things like canned tomatoes, stock cubes, crisps for example, but Ocado has nowhere near the same number of basics as the bigger supermarkets.

That's where the expense comes in my experience.

I don’t think anyone is saying that M&S or Waitrose are cheaper, but that they are not as expensive as people think.

SpyOfHut6 · 29/09/2024 17:19

Not always @Babush .

Mini cheddars for instance - 50p cheaper at Waitrose for a 12 pack the other week than in Aldi. A DC lunchbox staple here.

Oatily Barista is currently £1.50 at Waitrose, £1.70 at Asda, £2.10 at Morrisons.

When Oatily isn't on offer, something else is. Aldi's own oat milk is £1.09 but I don't like the taste.

As here

SteelBottle · 29/09/2024 17:20

No Tesco. I live opposite a fecking Waitrose though so I do top up bits and look at the reduced section. There's a few things they only do that I like, I like their own brand wash up liquid, they do tricolor quinoa. They just started sticking a new pasta that is half pasta half lentils so has more protein. You don't see people with fully laden family trolleys though.

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 29/09/2024 15:54

Yes- Ocado with a lot of M&S branded products in it.

M&S have a lovely range of laundry and cleaning products for the PPs saying that they don’t. I buy a lavender scented laundry wash that smells divine.

We had a food delivery this morning from Ocado and packets have shrunk massively and even then are not filled up more than half. That’s my main gripe. I love the quality/luxury branding.

ETA - I have stopped getting any comms from Ocado following my shop to say it was cheaper than Tesco or more expensive than Tesco so here’s a voucher for the difference. Not since July time at least.

I already have 2 Ocado Christmas slots booked and ready to go.

On the website it is under My Ocado, then Your Savings Hub.

If you’re only trying to buy the cheapest sure, if you’re benchmarking quality there isn’t a huge difference.

The cheapest value range from Asda is a lot worst than the M&S own brand in many cases.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 29/09/2024 17:21

Yes, I do the main part of my food shop at M&S every week. I find the food stays fresher and is much better quality on the whole. I don’t think it is crazy expensive either.

JudgieJudie · 29/09/2024 17:09

M&S is cheaper for mushrooms. 65p for a punnet. I hate them just the same, whatever price they are but, they are cheaper.

Pasta is comparable (basic, not golden or other frippery type). Butter is also about the same as supermarkets if you buy the standard. Cheese can be cheaper depending on what you're buying.
