Does anyone do the food shop exclusively in M&S or Waitrose?

This is my dream, if i win the lottery.
Between them there is so much choice and lovely food.

I can dream!

I do either Ocado or Waitrose.

It’s slightly more expensive but there is more choice and I find the quality better. Some own brand items are cheaper.

It’s probably £4 a week more than Tesco based on what I buy (not much processed or ready made)

PuppyMonkey · 29/09/2024 16:07

I mean, I love the quality of Marks but whenever I’ve been in, things are definitely more expensive than they are in Morrisons where I usually shop now. Things like packs of apples - they’re more in M&S. about 10-20p more for a pack of six. Course they probably do the odd special offer where they match it to other supermarkets. But in general, things are a bit more - which I think is fine, it’s often better quality.

SpyOfHut6 · 29/09/2024 16:08

Yes, me. I cook from scratch and only buy seasonal produce, buying whatever is on offer.

PickAChew · 29/09/2024 16:08

75% of our shop divided between the two with most of the rest from Sainsbury's or, occasionally, ocado. Stuff like washing powder often comes from places like home bargains and Savers.

I'd love to know what you eat to only spend £40 a week at Ocado. I budget £150 a week for two of us and struggle at that. It does include 2/3 bottles of wine, all household products and we both take packed lunch to work every day for that. wine alone come to around £30.

I cook things like spag bol, chilli, steak and chips, mushroom pasta or risotto, chicken casserole and veg, quiche with potatoes and salad, roast chicken dinner, haddock with mash and parsley sauce and peas, chicken curry, fresh tomato pasta, souvlaki and greek salad, paella etc. I buy cheese, ham, tuna for sarnies, yoghurts, eggs, plenty of fruit for breakfast, bread milk tea coffee etc. we often eat leftovers for lunch.

I’m on my own and follow a dull diet for reducing hypertension, which is lots of yogurt and frozen fruit, baked potatoes and Crosta and Mollica pizzas or a Charlie Bigham meal now and then. Here’s my current trolley

I do my shop at Ocado for convenience. U can get some really nice stuff. It not cheap over all though. Don't drink, don't smoke. This is my indulgence

HarrietBond · 29/09/2024 16:11

I used to shop almost entirely at Waitrose when living in the Channel Islands as it was the best option. It absolutely is not cheaper for basics than Aldi or Lidl. We now buy everything store cupboard from one of them along with quite a few other things. Our food bill is half what it used to be. We do buy stuff from other supermarkets, butchers etc too. We only buy free range or organic meat, and cook from scratch most to the time. The overall price difference from not having to shop entirely is Waitrose is huge.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 29/09/2024 16:12

I get everything at Waitrose bar the 3 items (custard creams, teacakes and tomatoes - honestly they are amazing) that I always get in M&S.

For a family of 4 it comes to about £200 a week.

I tried in Sainsbury's once and it was slightly cheaper...but my fruit rotted in a day. Wouldn't bother again after that tbh.

Saucery · 29/09/2024 16:13

I used to split weekly shops between Sainsburys and Waitrose but the standard of Sainsbury’s fresh food has plummeted so much in the last few months that it’s a false economy to shop there now. If the fruit and veg goes off in two days before we get to eat it then I’ve wasted my money, so Waitrose it is.
I’ve been going to my local large Sainsbury’s for 20 years or so but recently it has taken a real turn for the worse - broken open packets, shelves empty or a tip, blaring adverts constantly and those electronic ad boards at the end of aisles promoting absolute shite. I happily pay a bit more for Waitrose, although when I’ve compared prices there isn’t much difference and Waitrose often cheaper.
With a shop at Booths (lovely Northern supermarket) every fortnight or so. M&S is out of my way, so go there less often, but stock up on their porridge oats and ready meals for the freezer when I do go.

StiggyZardust · 29/09/2024 16:14

Weekly shop is at Waitrose, I top up at Lidls. Like to keep it real.

Saucery · 29/09/2024 16:15

Oh and that horrendous grey vacuum packed mince at Sainsburys! Ugh!

Marmite27 · 29/09/2024 16:03

M&S sell all these things!

They do, but with more limited selections, smaller pack sizes and fewer discounts than normal supermarkets.

Same here @BCBird , I don't drink, smoke or eat out much which is how I justify it to myself!

NellGB · 29/09/2024 16:19

We shop Ocado. I usually get two deliveries a week and then we get all our meat and most of our vegetables from the local farm shop. I think it’s good value, M&S baked beans are only 50p, wholemeal bread is 75p, tomato soup 70p. Not everything is expensive or branded.
I’m pissed off though as I’ve not managed to get any Christmas delivery slots. Which means I’ll have to find somewhere else to shop Christmas week and won’t be able to eat my usual foods

When are they announced? It's a bit early isn't it?

ssd · 29/09/2024 15:28

Interesting, thanks. But surely marks and waitrose are dearer than other supermarkets?

They are more expensive but surely you can understand that some people are fortunate enough that that doesn't have to be their priority.

Look at clothes shops. DH could buy a perfectly acceptable pair of jeans from M&S for 18 quid (!). But he chooses to spend 72 pounds on a pair of Levi's because that's what he prefers.
I could get a functional plastic handbag for twenty quid but I want to get a leather one in the style I like for one hundred pounds, or more.

NellGB · 29/09/2024 16:26

@Doggymummar it is early! But they were announced a few days ago. I went in the same day I got the email but it says nothing available

I mean what are you actually eating for breakfast l lunches and dinners? I would hardly call that basket a food shop unless you aren’t really shopping for the week and have loads in already.

Chewbecca · 29/09/2024 16:30

Yes, I do. I don't find them terribly expensive, but I do cook from scratch and only buy seasonal fruit and veg which helps a lot.
Chicken breasts, frozen salmon fillets, eggs (just over £1) are all very reasonable in M&S. Greek (style) yoghurt just over £1 for a big pot. A cabbage was 85p. M&S DO sell branded goods now too, but not always great value.

Cuwins · 29/09/2024 16:31

They're not cheaper despite what people insist on these threads. We switched to Ocado for a couple months last year and whilst yes the basics are comparably priced, the expense comes with the lack of own brand choices. I can't quite remember what I struggled to get exactly but there are certain things I just don't feel compelled to buy brand name, things like canned tomatoes, stock cubes, crisps for example, but Ocado has nowhere near the same number of basics as the bigger supermarkets.

That's where the expense comes in my experience.

Yes whenever I have looked I have found it would be a lot more expensive for us but I buy almost entirely own brand stuff and a lot of basic brand.
I think if you buy a lot of branded stuff: Heinz beans, Birds Eye fish fingers, knorr stock etc it's probably very similar

newnamethanks · 29/09/2024 16:38

Waitrose mostly every 7-10 days but buy cleaning stuff and basic toiletries from Iceland to compensate a bit. Only shopping for one, couldn't do it for a family.

I have a baked potato or two with cheese and butter and spinach or a pizza, and most days some fruit and yogurt. I usually only have one meal a day but rarely turn down invitations to eat with family or friends!

Separately I buy two or three kg masa (nixtamalized corn) and dried pinto and black beans once or twice a year, an annual total of way less than £20. I slow cook the beans and freeze in one cup portions. Add water to a small amount of masa, press and you have fresh corn tortillas to fry or bake or whatever.

RidingMyBike · 29/09/2024 16:44

M and S via Ocado, with a trip to Sainsburys and Waitrose probably a couple of times a month to get some items Ocado doesn't sell or where the comparable product is cheaper.

The basic ingredients like flour, butter, milk, eggs, tinned foods are all good quality and reasonably priced.

Some of it is convenience - I can easily get to those stores whereas Aldi and Lidl would take a lot of time to get to and do the shop. Waitrose does yellow sticker produce which is still excellent quality. I've tried online deliveries from Sainsburys and Tesco and wasn't impressed with the quality and the number of substitutions.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/09/2024 16:47

My PiL only shop in Waitrose.
They say it's the only shop in their town, but there's always been a Tesco, and now there's a Lidl and an Aldi.

reluctantbrit · 29/09/2024 16:47

@NellGB - I never get online shopping for Christmas and I never struggle in the stores.

Maybe because we shop at Waitrose? But we buy lots of things in advance and just add fresh stuff for 3 days on the 22nd/23rd.
