Have you lost weight eating lots of soup?

It's always put forward that soup is healthy and good for weight loss. Now it's getting cold. I thought I'd give this a go to help me lose a stone.

Low calorie soups are never very filling - yes, you’ll likely lose weight but you’ll also be hungry!

eeeeeeeee · 28/09/2024 08:02

Yes, soup was essentially my diet as a broke student and it was a cheap way to lose and maintain my weight. Soup can be very filling especially those fresh tubs from M&S

smallsilvercloud · 28/09/2024 08:06

Yes, I often make Butternut squash and sage soup, it's low cal and filling enough, I sometimes have it as my main dinner. Homemade soups are more filling and healthier than the shop bought ones.

I lost about half a stone over winter buy not doing many changes except taking home made soup into work for lunch rather than having a sandwich or other leftovers. They are chunky soups with veg and beans or lentils. No bread with them. Then take a banana for a snack later....

FusionChefGeoff · 28/09/2024 08:27

If you want to go hard, avoid the really starchy veg so stick to broccoli / cauliflower / greens / leeks but make it nice and creamy with soured cream swirled in at the end - and make sure you have some protein on the side so eg a sliced cooked chicken breast.

I actuallly have a large zip lock freezer bag that I add all the ends of broccoli, middle of cauliflower, leftover veg, parsley stalks, wilting celery etc then when it's full, I fry a chopped onion / celery / carrot then chuck all the veg in. Cover with water and a load of bouillon power or just vegetable stock and add a couple of handfuls of lentils. Thyme and white pepper are good for adding depth.

Then half an hour later blitz it and add water / splash of milk until correct texture.

I met someone who lost a couple of stone by predominantly eating those New Covent Garden soups.

Yousay55 · 28/09/2024 08:30

Yes-lost a lot of weight eating the healthiest and most filling soup called ribollita-Italian peasant soup.

brightpompoms · 28/09/2024 08:31

I blend a tin of white cannelini beans into all my soups. Fills them out and high protein makes you feel fuller and you can't taste the difference.

polkadotpixie · 28/09/2024 08:39

Yes, I lost a stone eating Weetabix for breakfast and soup for lunch every day for a couple of months, it was a bit boring but I could still eat a normal dinner and lose weight

Dracuuule · 28/09/2024 08:50

So much inspiration! Great to know and very encouraging.
I'm going to go down the filling soup route as I want to avoid bread (sob) and I love lentils and beans anyway.
Let's see how much weight I can lose by the end of October. My coat is a bit tight so this is a necessity now Blush

I love the odds and ends idea! I will do this as I often make soup. Presumably you keep the bag in the fridge not freezer if there are fresh herbs?

FusionChefGeoff · 28/09/2024 23:07

@DiscoBeat nope I put everything straight into the freezer. Parsley stalks seem to cope ok and generally it's texture that's buggered by freezing so that doesn't matter once it's cooked and blitzed

DatingDinosaur · 28/09/2024 23:31

Yes. Fridge Soup fan here - left over and soft veggies rolling around in the bottom of the fridge. Give them a new lease of life. I don't even bother with a stock (too salty for me) - just add herbs - then boil to death and blitz to consistency of choice. Freezes well so can be a quick meal too. The colour can sometimes be a little Confused depending on the veg.

Similar to a poster above, fruit and yoghurt for breakfast, soup and wholemeal roll for lunch and normal evening meal (but mindful of portion size).

I also make red pepper and tomato soup (thickened up this also makes a good pasta sauce base), potato and leek soup, sweet potato, carrot and tomato soup, parsnip and apple soup, cauliflower, courgette and chickpea (this one, for some reason, acts like a mild laxative for me so was always a favourite the night before weighday Grin ),

SarahReeves · 29/09/2024 07:26

I only stick to plain vegetable soup, and I try to go easy on the salt an d oil. If it's too tasty, I can't help but go back for a few more bowls!

Weetabix then soup and a normal dinner- now that's a diet I could do.
Like the white canneneli beans idea too
Thanks both

Porridgeislife · 29/09/2024 07:33

Yes - I’ve been having a meal replacement shake for breakfast and soup for lunch. I’m losing weight steadily.

This is a favourite but I replace the canned lentils with 115g dried red split lentils.

This is inspiring.

Vettrianofan · 29/09/2024 07:37

Yes. I make big batches of carrot and coriander soup with some red lentils thrown in. Very tasty.

Vettrianofan · 29/09/2024 07:44

I don't eat bread with the soup, but will have two pieces of fruit afterwards and also a handful of almonds.

treacledan71 · 29/09/2024 07:52

I am going to try this this week too. Lost weight with it before. Going to make some soup but also I love oxtail soup so got a few tins of that too. My home made soup is not always great but got a new recipie. Last time I sometimes did have a bit of bread but just the 50 cal bread or I dipped a rice cake in.

VanillaSox · 29/09/2024 08:19

Oooh 50 cal bread??? Where do you buy it?

Hi. It is warburtons no added sugar wholemeal. Tbh not much to it but I break it up in to the soup. It does feel like proper bread though. Sometimes i may have half a slice of normal bread. Have used thins too. Sorry its 55 not 50 cals.

nzeire · 29/09/2024 08:33
