Have you lost weight eating lots of soup?

It's always put forward that soup is healthy and good for weight loss. Now it's getting cold. I thought I'd give this a go to help me lose a stone.

Yes, I lost a stone eating Weetabix for breakfast and soup for lunch every day for a couple of months, it was a bit boring but I could still eat a normal dinner and lose weight

I like this idea,
Weetabix is a favourite breakfast of mine and Shreddies 😆,
how many weetabix do you have?
With or without milk?
And may I ask what flavour soup you ate, was it home made, tin or 'fresh' from supermarket?

The soup makers are great and very easy to make your own soup. The ninja one even has a cleaning function. Have lots of soup and just throw the veg, some liquid and stock cubes in and come back in half an hour to yummy soup.

It will come down to what is in the soup!!

I have a soup maker and use it throughout the year. I made 3 different soups this week

  • carrot and courgette
  • broccoli and cauliflower
  • pea and carrot
Each soup has the listed vegetables, onion, garlic and stock made from cubes. Sometimes I serve them with grated cheese (especially the cauliflower and broccoli) and add a toasted bagel or pitta for some crunch.

But, in addition to soup, I moderate what I have at other mealtimes. So, breakfast is fruit and low fat yoghurt; scrambled eggs and tinned tomatoes or porridge. Dinner will be chicken, fish or meat and salad or vegetables but no pots, rice or pasta unless I’m having a roast. I rarely have processed meat such as sausages; rarely buy ready meals and only have carbs once a day so, if I’ve had cereal, I won’t have a bagel with my soup. Following this I’ve lost almost 3 1/2 stone since the end of January!!

Some years back I met a man who had lost a huge amount of weight simply be eating only homemade vegetable soup, thin minestrone-style no potatoes, every other day, so practically halving his calorie intake for the week.

If you have your calorie intake, you will reduce your metabolic rate to nothing. Look up calculating your calories per day for loss, maintenance or gain and if you are in deficit, you will lose. Reduce it too much and your loss will tail off.

This is my staple winter lunchtime soup, filling, nutritious, really tasty. I don’t mess about taking half the spices out, just leave it all in, and I just slice / chop the carrots small and cook til tender as grating is too much work. I don’t add milk either. I make a lot and freeze it in portions.

I like the bags of frozen sofrito (finely chopped carrots, celery and onions) you can get in Sainsbury’s to make soup. I tend to add them to lentils and a stock cube to make soup.

@JustToBeMe I had 2 weetabix with semi skimmed milk & a bit of sugar and then just a normal tin of soup for lunch, usually sweet potato, broccoli & Stilton or tomato & lentil

Yes, just eating soup makes the weight fall off me.

And then it goes right back on when I start eating normally/eating solids.

The liver reduction diet that you’re asked to follow for 2 weeks pre weight loss surgery can be soup based. As long as you stay at 800 calories, that’s fine. My pre-surgery diet consisted of 2 cans of either beef or chicken Heinz Big soup and 4 Muller light yogurts a day (never managed 4). I lost 18lbs in 2 weeks, literally stuck to that with the occasional bit of lettuce and celery, I was desperate for the crunch. The problem, I imagine, is that weight will go back on once you increase calories/go back to eating normally.

If you want to lose weight via soup (remember the cabbage soup diet?! Think it was a hospital pre-heart surgery thing years ago), then prioritise protein as the primary ingredient. As mentioned, it’s filling. Post surgery, it’s supposed to form the basis of our diet, eat protein first then veg/salad then carbs.

I'll start tomorrow and I'd love to have people doing the same supporting each other. I don't want to do anything drastic as I'd like to maintain the diet for a while.
I'm not good with breakfast and I'm happy to have a big coffee. My plan will be
Coffee
Home made soup and either thins, ryvita or pitta bread.
1 piece of fruit
Low carb dinner

I have a soup maker, which I don’t use enough but I really enjoy the soups I make when I do use it.

I’m going away for 3 weeks soon, so I’d better make the most of it this week and I’ll hopefully be using it all throughout the winter when I’m back. So it’ll probably be “soup November” for me.

Soup for lunch and then dinner with just some fruit in between sounds like a good plan @Dracuuule .

I’m only 5ft 2 and I find to lose weight it’s best if I eat about 1000 calories a day unless I’m walking /exercises loads , which I’m not able to at the moment. So 2 meals a day with a small snack and lots of water, tea and coffee works well for me too. I’ll look into eating like that when I’m back from holiday.

I’ve actually lost 12 pounds since May, if I lose 12 more pounds by end of year I’d be so chuffed and would be finally back in the healthy weight range for my height.

Celeriac makes a great soup - it’s low in carbs, but makes a lovely thick and creamy soup. Chop it up with some onions and roast in the oven, then add stock and blitz for the fullest flavour, but you can just boil it up with the stock. Really lovely by itself or as a base for adding other vegetables and is quite filling.

Eggs for breakfast is a good alternative to cereals/toast too - the protein keeps you full for longer. I add some tomatoes, ham or a bit of grated cheese sometimes.

Yes, I've lost just over 5 stone in the last year. Second only to massively reducing my drinking, soup has made the biggest difference.

Like others here, I make end-of-the-week fridge and lentil soup - I like to add chilli and lemon to mine. Also pea and ham (dried marrowfat peas or split yellow) and chicken and pearl barley. If I put plenty of pulses in I'm not so tempted to have bread with it. I make a big pan, eat it for a couple of days, then freeze the leftovers in portions.

I remember years ago Michael Moseley said it takes longer to digest soup than solid food so it keeps you fuller for longer. I did MFP when I was just starting out and the soups do come out surprisingly low calorie for how satisfying they are. Also homemade casseroles and stews, as long as you can go easy on the dumplings.

Yes, I often make Butternut squash and sage soup, it's low cal and filling enough, I sometimes have it as my main dinner. Homemade soups are more filling and healthier than the shop bought ones.

Would you mind sharing your recipe ? I have a BN and lots of sage in garden so sounds good to me

Yes! Soup is my go to when I’m trying to lose weight. Easier to do in the autumn/winter.

Yes. I eat soup for lunch all winter. It has to be filling though e.g. containing lentils/beans/potato or I get starving later & tempted to snack. Sometimes I have a slice of toast with it.

If you want to go hard, avoid the really starchy veg so stick to broccoli / cauliflower / greens / leeks but make it nice and creamy with soured cream swirled in at the end - and make sure you have some protein on the side so eg a sliced cooked chicken breast.

I actuallly have a large zip lock freezer bag that I add all the ends of broccoli, middle of cauliflower, leftover veg, parsley stalks, wilting celery etc then when it's full, I fry a chopped onion / celery / carrot then chuck all the veg in. Cover with water and a load of bouillon power or just vegetable stock and add a couple of handfuls of lentils. Thyme and white pepper are good for adding depth.

Then half an hour later blitz it and add water / splash of milk until correct texture.

I used to make something similar when my kids lived at home - it was one of their favourites known as "bottom of the fridge" soup.

I blend a tin of white cannelini beans into all my soups. Fills them out and high protein makes you feel fuller and you can't taste the difference.

My favourite soup is very low in calories and carbs and super easy to make - courgettes, one onion, 3 garlic cloves, salt, pepper, water to cover. Simmer until soft then blitz to puree. It's very thick and creamy and doesn't taste like you're on a diet! It definitely beats the cabbage soup diet if you remember that one? 🤮
