Have you lost weight eating lots of soup?

It's always put forward that soup is healthy and good for weight loss. Now it's getting cold. I thought I'd give this a go to help me lose a stone.

I've found a chicken tortilla type one I'm going to make this weekend
Need to lose some weight and I keep eating sandwiches at lunch as it's so easy

MysteriousUsername · 02/10/2024 14:41

I'm just having some soup for lunch while reading this! Sounds like a great idea. I'm having a tin of soup now, but I have a soup maker so will buy some veg and beans etc and make my own. I need to lose about 4 stone.

We eat tons of soup

Latest tasty soup was:

1/4 Cauliflower
A leek
2 parsnips
3 onions
3 carrots
3 celery sticks
2 big tomatoes
Handful red lentils
Garlic
Bay leaf
2 chicken stock cubes

Makes absolutely pints and really filling

I'm in too.
Carrot, red onion and lentil soup today ( and tonorrow)
Leek and potato.is another favourite, and I'm reducing the number of potatoes.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 02/10/2024 15:56

The one I make is
Red pepper
Celery
Carrots
Onion
Garlic
Leeks
Mushrooms
Parsley (I use dried)
Paprika
Chicken or veg stock
Occasionally a potato

The recipe does call for the mushrooms to be fried separately but most of the time I just Chuck everything except the garlic into a large pan. Sauté everything until softened. Then add the garlic in for the last minute or so before adding the stock. Once it's cooked I scoop out about a ladle of liquid and add to the blender along with most of the veg. Blend that up and then pour it back into the pan and mix it in to the rest of the liquid and whatever veg is left in there. I rarely have bread with it. Only because I could quite easily dunk half a loaf of thickly buttered bread into it.

I’ve made the chickpea, lentil and harissa soup sometime posted upthread and had it for lunch yesterday and today, there’s enough left for tomorrow and hopefully Friday.

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 03/10/2024 07:25

My soup yesterday was a huge courgette (there was a discussion at the community larder whether they were big courgettes or small marries they were that big!) a large onion, 1/2 a cooked cauliflower and half a dozen cooked sprouts (left over from dinner the day before) a tablespoon of garlic paste and 2 veggie stock cubes dissolved in enough water to reach the maximum line in the soup maker. Cooked on smooth setting which takes about 25 minutes, cooked veggies only added for last 6-7 minutes to heat them through and blend.

We had it with a Warburton’s protein bagel thin and 30g grated mature cheddar cheese sprinkled in it. Left enough for another portion each for today. This sort of soup is our daily lunch when the kids are at school - I don’t always have the cheese or bagel but my husband does; even without them I find it filling enough but still low calorie.

@outforawalkbiatch this sounds lovely, have you got a recipe? 🙏🙏🙏

outforawalkbiatch · 03/10/2024 09:00

@WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing I'll be using normal corn and tinned tomatoes but might add some chipotle paste

If you want to go hard, avoid the really starchy veg so stick to broccoli / cauliflower / greens / leeks but make it nice and creamy with soured cream swirled in at the end - and make sure you have some protein on the side so eg a sliced cooked chicken breast.

I actuallly have a large zip lock freezer bag that I add all the ends of broccoli, middle of cauliflower, leftover veg, parsley stalks, wilting celery etc then when it's full, I fry a chopped onion / celery / carrot then chuck all the veg in. Cover with water and a load of bouillon power or just vegetable stock and add a couple of handfuls of lentils. Thyme and white pepper are good for adding depth.

Then half an hour later blitz it and add water / splash of milk until correct texture.

I do this too!

Soup + protein....... so easy, and yet so delicious - and healthy.

How much water do you use with this? and are the lentils tinned or dried?

I have a soup maker but find the roast and blend method easier:

Everything to roast in airfryer - then blitz in blender with water & stock or coconut milk.

I have made a lovely butternut squash with garlic and ginger and also cauliflower with cumin seeds soups this week (both have loads of onion and garlic as a base) - great ideas to add pulses for protein and the sofritto mix (onion, carrot, celery - think its £1 for a frozen bag).

Any suggestions which shop bought (tinned/'fresh') are low call, low fat, low sugar, low salt & veggie

@brightpompoms the blended cannelloni beans is a great idea.

Transam · 03/10/2024 09:30

Placemarking. Great idea!

You can chuck in any beans. We use butter beans a lot, we use pinto beans if we’re doing a spicy Mexican type soup. They’re all good!

I'm in! I made 2 lots of soup yesterday and have just ordered that silicone tray mentioned upthread.

I can't see the post about the silicone tray. What's it for?

Vettrianofan · 03/10/2024 15:12

I'm making soup this weekend with left over veg in the fridge.
Sorry pressed too soon! Also cabbage, cauliflower, turnip, carrot, red pepper. Going to fling in red peppers. Lots of veg stock too. Bought a massive soup bowl with handles today from B&Ms. Looking forward to using it!

outforawalkbiatch · 03/10/2024 15:24

This is a handy tip too

Yes and you could always try those bread thins. Think they are around 100 calories each for the wholemeal ones. I make my own vegetable soup, and have weight watchers soups and those packets that you just add water to in the cupboard on hand too if I run out

I finally registered for MN thanks to this thread!

when i was 25 i lost 4 stone in 6 months by eating porridge fruit and nuts for breakfast then variations of minestrone with bread and butter for lunch and dinner. Im over 50 now and do not expect to have these sorts of results again, but anything will help. I plan to have fruit, eggs and yoghurt for breakfast then soups the other meals until november. Today i had chicken and vegetable soup with cheesy croutons and dinner will be pea, courgette and ham soup with garlic bread. Easy, filling and delicious!

GameOfJones · 04/10/2024 17:02

I did! I lost a lot of weight previously by sticking to a very similar routine. It was dull, but did the trick.

In Autumn/Winter breakfast of porridge and berries and lunch of vegetable soup then a normal dinner.

In Spring/Summer breakfast of Weetabix and lunch of either cous cous with veg or greek yoghurt with nuts and berries, then a normal dinner.

Parry5timesbeforedeath · 05/10/2024 15:30

I am very inspired. today is pea and ham soup with crusty bread and home made borscht with sour cream and dill. Borscht is DH,s favourite soup so he is happy.

Runninggirls26 · 05/10/2024 19:34

Can anyone recommend a container that keeps soup hot? We don’t have a microwave at work but thinking I could heat up at home in the morning

TakeMe2Insanity · 05/10/2024 19:41

Don’t forget noodle soups.

Components:

  • broth
  • protein
  • veg
  • noodle rice/low carb
  • some type of chilli paste
