What's the lowest speed you've got a speeding ticket in a 20mph zone?

Just curious.
I've got one for going at 27mph.

I've never got a ticket in a 20mph limit, it's easy enough not to.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 27/09/2024 17:25

I haven't, but I've heard of someone getting one at 24mph locally.

Are you surprised you got one at 35% over the limit? It's hard to tell why you're asking.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 27/09/2024 17:28

24mph! Bloody fuming still to this day, wide road no houses- bloody ridiculous

That’s not really a low speed in a 20mph zone!

InWithThePlums · 27/09/2024 17:29

Don’t you get 10% leeway? So presumably people have been fined for 22mph.

I notice you said you've never got a ticket rather than that you've never gone over 20mph (or any other speed limit)

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 27/09/2024 17:30

22 in a 20, but I was offered a course rather than points and a fine.

Lovelynames123 · 27/09/2024 17:34

I think 27 is high in a 20, I got caught doing 34 in a 30 and was pretty cross with myself, then doing 80 on the virtually empty motorway which was annoying! I use my cruise control and speed limiter more often than not now as it's too easy to creep up, and I've done a speed awareness course in the last year, so would definitely be points

Yawn! As someone points out you don’t say you’ve never gone over. I’ve had a clean license for nearly 20yrs, all the roads in London suddenly plummet to 20mph and suddenly I’m a bad driver- nope the stupid roads they made blanket 20mph are the problem. Make all the roads 10mph then, let’s see who’s a “speeder” and revenue from fines rocket.

BestestBrownies · 27/09/2024 17:36

They don't do the 10% leeway thing anymore, as apparently speedometers in cars are accurate enough these days.

DH had to do an online speed awareness course very recently and there were at least 4 people who had been caught doing 21/22 in a 20 limit. DH being one of them.

TeenLifeMum · 27/09/2024 17:37

I’ve never sped on a 20mph area as it’s usually that speed for an obvious reason. I did get done doing 33 in a 30 late at night. That felt annoying. I did speed awareness sat next to a guy who was doing 90 on the motorway (he was an RAF pilot and could handle the speed apparently 🙄).

Phase2 · 27/09/2024 17:38

God the 20mph limits on London drove me half demented visiting my sister in hospital. Absolutely pointless.

MingingTiles · 27/09/2024 17:39
  1. So annoying.

Exactly. I was caught doing 27mph. I thought the road was still 30mph. Don't forget most of us were taught to drive when the limit was 30 on most roads. It's quite a change. Yes 20 is safer than 30. Ten is safer than 20 though so why don't we lower the limit to 10?

Wasn't it obvious why it was 30? 😉

Inslopia · 27/09/2024 17:44

As a Londoner some of the 20 mph make sense, others not so much.

Tel12 · 27/09/2024 17:45

There's no leeway. When it says 20 that's what it means

Newbutoldfather · 27/09/2024 17:47

Other than narrow residential roads, 20MPH is ridiculous!

Yes, you are much less likely to kill someone if you hit them, but that isn’t the killer argument people think it is. You would be still less likely at 10 mph, and even less at 5mph. Soon we will be back to people having to walk in front of a car waving a red flag.

Driving has always been a compromise between safety, convenience and pleasure (although that has totally gone out the window).

Most people totally ignore the limits except when there is a camera.

MingingTiles · 27/09/2024 17:49

Not sure what this means. Where I live every road is now a 20.

Yes, I live in an area that is mainly 40mph through villages and 60mph down country lanes! Going to visit relatives in London is a nightmare because the speed creeps up as I'm used to faster roads. Some of the roads in London are so conjested I can understand why, but others are lovely wide normal roads that would be 40mph where I live.

Inslopia · 27/09/2024 17:50

Some of those 60mph country lanes shouldn’t be 60 imo though!

itwasnevermine · 27/09/2024 17:51

I've never had a speeding ticket. Once I thought I'd been flashed doing 34 in a 30, I was sick with worry for weeks (new driver), and it was enough to put me off speeding again

Rosiepeta · 27/09/2024 17:53

23 mph in a 20mph area. Was kicking myself, did a course so no fine/ points.

No, I've never had a ticket at all! 😁 that wasn't the question though and I don't like to jinx myself.
