What's the lowest speed you've got a speeding ticket in a 20mph zone?

Just curious.
I've got one for going at 27mph.

as there will be times when you are going downhill etc where you will automatically speed up

Have you thought of using the brake? 🤔

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/09/2024 20:01

26 mph. Had to do a Speed Awareness course.

Sodthebloodymealplan · 27/09/2024 20:11

An electric car with the speed limiter on would solve the 'second gear' discomfort.

And people trying to blame the roads for their own heavy right foot and inability to read a road sign is pretty weak. If you get caught speeding, just own it, do the course, pay the fine. I have been caught when a limit was temporarily reduced from 40 to 30. No one else to blame except me. If you are not paying enough attention to notice a speed restriction (as I wasn't), you need to look at yourself, not try to pass the buck.

Why were you going 7mph over the speed limit?
I've been driving for 42 years and never got one.

Well this is confusing.

Are you saying you stick to twenty because it's obvious why it is...but you were speeding in a 30 because it wasn't obvious?

🙄 sorry to have confused you.

woodlandtrees · 27/09/2024 20:49

24mph !!!

Slightly off topic but the other week I had to drive home from work with my spare spacer wheel on after my regular tyre got punctured by a rather inconvenient nail. These spacer tyres are restricted to 50mph and my route home was predominantly national speed limit roads but I stuck religiously to my 50mph.

The number of people who thought racing up behind me and almost aggressively sitting on the back bumper would make me go faster was a real eye opener. The single carriageway perhaps I could understand but on the dual carriageways with empty overtaking lanes was just ridiculous.

Did make me wonder how people drive in areas where 20mph is the standard limit.

With things like speeding I'd say it's more a matter of trying than natural talent.

So you can definitely start driving more safely if you choose to.

I have an old car with inaccurate speedo and no limiter. I do worry when in a 20 I will miss something outside of my car because I do have to focus on ensuring I am not doing more than 20 as well as focus on the surroundings. I worry most about hitting an electric scooter as it jumps off the pavement into the road in front of me (as they want to turn right), or whips past me at a faster speed, or the passenger sat on the handlebars falls off and crashes the scooter in front of me.

CandyLeBonBon · 27/09/2024 22:10

I hate 20mph zones - had to drive all through south London yesterday due to M25 closures, and coupled with aggressive speed bumps, it's not an enjoyable ride, but I'd have been hard pushed to achieve 27 in a 20 zone and whilst I find 20 insanely irritating I understand why the restrictions are there. I use Google maps to help me ensure I'm in the right speed limit. I feel your pain op but 27 is way higher than you should've been doing and it's your job as a driver to stick to the limits.

DeeCeeCherry · 27/09/2024 22:14

22 mph on Tower Bridge. I sold my car recently and just decided I'm not going to replace it, at least for now. 20mph driving in London is too annoying, plus it's just a way for authorities to screw more money out of car drivers

I've never got a ticket in a 20mph limit, it's easy enough not to.

😂😂😂. As I opened this thread I had a mental bet on how many posts in we would be before this one cropped up. First post! Well done! 🏆🏅

Theoldcuriosityshop · 27/09/2024 22:19

I got a ticket for doing 23 in a 20 zone. £90 fine and a speed awareness course. First time speeding in over 45 years driving.

There's no leeway. When it says 20 that's what it means

Apparently there is in some counties. Hampshire was mentioned by the guy leading my speed awareness course this very month, so it's not a hard and fast rule, so to speak.

Certainly not driving!

HornyHornersPinger · 28/09/2024 13:16

I've read you usually get away with 10% above the speed limit, so 22 in a 20mph, 55 in a 50mph zone etc. That's been true for the many times I see the camera vans along the stupidly slow 50mph stretches of the 2 lane dual carriageway near me.

flippytheseptember · 28/09/2024 13:44

i got one for doing 33 on a 30 road - my car hologram thingy was showing speed limit was 40 on that road (faulty clearly!) and i always drive under the limit so was pretty upset when i got it.

i did the same course as drink drivers 😩 did the course and paid a fine. no points

Are you sure? The two courses are very different and the cost of the course for drink driving is considerably more than the speed awareness course.

I find it hard to believe that anyone got anything more than a warning letter doing 21/22 in a 20 zone. Seeing is believing for me when someone says they were prosecuted for speeding 1 or 2 mph over.
The same applies for anyone claiming that they were done for doing 31/32 in a 30.

It is happening though a lot in London.

Being a slow driver does not automatically make you a good driver

Fevertreelover · 28/09/2024 14:21

We don’t have enforceable 20 near me so never.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/09/2024 14:28

Being a slow driver does not automatically make you a good driver

Being able to observe and obey a low speed limit doesn't automatically make someone a 'slow driver'.

flippytheseptember · 28/09/2024 14:45

yes, we had all sorts in our group. some people were there for the second time in a couple of months as well which i didn't think was allowed? i thought only first time 'offenders' were offered this course.
