What's the lowest speed you've got a speeding ticket in a 20mph zone?

Just curious.
I've got one for going at 27mph.

I had to post though as we live at the edge of a 20mph village and the amount of times we've had people dangerously speeding past our tiny kids as we leave the house on foot because 'there's no need for this wide road to have this limit' and sworn at too for having the temerity to be walking along 🤔 as people like to believe the limit ends a good couple hundred meters before it does (and even then it's 30, not the 40+ they usually hit before they go past ours)...

24! On the A23! Ridiculous. I never get above 4th gear in London and rarely over third.

I used to be a driving instructor in inner London, before this 20mph on main roads nonsense came in. The number of times I said to new drivers "Get that speed up! Really get it up!" when they dawdled at 26mph. Now you have to crawl, along the same roads. I used a bus lane on a very wide 20mph road (at a time when it was allowed), at 20mph, and I was overtaken by... a bus. The irony.

I don't know how anyone learns to drive in London any more. As it was, I had to ask pupils to get the underground to meet me in outer London just to get up to 40mph; it would practically take a whole lesson to do the outward journey to such a road, never mind there and back.

Londonmummy66 · 27/09/2024 18:17

DH was done for 24 but there was someone on his speed awareness course done for 22.

Yes I remember my driving instructor saying things like that when I learnt to drive decades ago. Like I said I was caught doing 27 on a 20. The road was previously 30 obviously and I still thought it was....if my instructor had seen me doing 27 years ago, he'd have told me to pick my speed up!

Arlanymor · 27/09/2024 18:24

23 - it was after default 20mph speed limit on restricted roads came in, in Wales. Road was previously a 30mph. Remember reading this article and thinking, er no! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cj9l9194lg4o

A 30mph speed limit sign in front of a 20mph speed limit sign

Wales 20mph: Calls made for 1,500 roads to revert to 30mph

Despite widespread opposition to the plan, police point to a drop in casualties and crashes.

Comedycook · 27/09/2024 17:41

Exactly. I was caught doing 27mph. I thought the road was still 30mph. Don't forget most of us were taught to drive when the limit was 30 on most roads. It's quite a change. Yes 20 is safer than 30. Ten is safer than 20 though so why don't we lower the limit to 10?

But everyone was taught to read the signs when they learned to drive.

Inslopia · 27/09/2024 17:50

Some of those 60mph country lanes shouldn’t be 60 imo though!

They aren't...most of them are 'national speed limit' which means 'no faster than the lower of safe for the conditions /60'. It's not a target.

I notice you said you've never got a ticket rather than that you've never gone over 20mph (or any other speed limit)

No, I've never had a ticket at all! 😁 that wasn't the question though and I don't like to jinx myself.

You've still Not clarified. You've just confirmed you've never had a right. The question was 'have you ever gone over the speed limit'?

Mablesyruo · 27/09/2024 18:29

23…but at least eligible for speed awareness!

InTheRainOnATrain · 27/09/2024 18:33

DH got done for 24 in a 20. Classic London A-road that was a 30 until the week before, usually v slow moving traffic during the day but he was unusually for him driving it at night. At least he got offered the course!

Floralnomad · 27/09/2024 18:37

I’ve never been done for speeding but I must say that driving into London now is an absolute nightmare and takes forever to get anywhere , we can’t use public transport as my daughter has medical issues that prevent it .

Applesinautumn · 27/09/2024 18:39

I now get so annoyed with all the drivers who come up right behind me and try to get me to speed up in a 20mph zone- happens a lot and it makes driving in 20mph zones stressful

SocksTalk · 27/09/2024 18:42

I have learned my lesson and try my best to stay under 20.
However I think most people seem to assume they are safe at 23/24 which doesn't seem to be the case.
To be absolutely sure of staying under 20 you probably need to drive at 15/16 mph as there will be times when you are going downhill etc where you will automatically speed up.
This means driving in 2nd gear which takes some getting used to.

Other than narrow residential roads, 20MPH is ridiculous!

Yes, you are much less likely to kill someone if you hit them, but that isn’t the killer argument people think it is. You would be still less likely at 10 mph, and even less at 5mph. Soon we will be back to people having to walk in front of a car waving a red flag.

Driving has always been a compromise between safety, convenience and pleasure (although that has totally gone out the window).

Most people totally ignore the limits except when there is a camera.

The 'red flag' thing is hyperbole...as you then say, it's a compromise. In urban areas the compromise used to be 30 but now for some it's 20.

There may be places where that's genuinely too low (wales obviously overdid it) but in others, what motorists complain about may be appreciated by people who live on those streets. I'm delighted the B road through our village is now 20 and the roads between us and the next ones are 30 not derestricted. It barely makes any difference to travel times but it's so much nicer for walking and cycling.

TeenLifeMum · 27/09/2024 19:01

Comedycook · 27/09/2024 17:43

Wasn't it obvious why it was 30? 😉

Not really - as in not by a school or play park. 20 zones tend to have additional high risk pedestrians.

FloydGerhardt · 27/09/2024 19:17

I find it hard to believe that anyone got anything more than a warning letter doing 21/22 in a 20 zone. Seeing is believing for me when someone says they were prosecuted for speeding 1 or 2 mph over.
The same applies for anyone claiming that they were done for doing 31/32 in a 30.

Yes and when you are getting overtaken by people on bikes and scooters it does get annoying on certain straight/ clear view roads! Sadly you also get a lot of angry drivers behind you who do unsafe overtakes which drives me mad ( both my courses have come after 23 in a 20 mph and 34 in a 30 mph on downhills so am retrying to avoid a hat trick)

bergamotorange · 27/09/2024 19:27

It's good to know the 20mph limit is being enforced.

User19876536484 · 27/09/2024 19:27

They don't do the 10% leeway thing anymore, as apparently speedometers in cars are accurate enough these days

Unless they can automatically compensate for tyres wearing down and different circumferences of tyres of the same nominal size I find this unlikely.

TroysMammy · 27/09/2024 19:30

I was on a 60mph road today and I nearly forgot my car had 5 gears.

No, speedos aren't accurate - they're always calibrated to read high. So if the op was clocked doing 27 her speedo will have been reading higher.

So no excuse there.

Well this is confusing.

Are you saying you stick to twenty because it's obvious why it is...but you were speeding in a 30 because it wasn't obvious?

Devastated999 · 27/09/2024 19:44

All roads here are 20mph in built up areas. For DS currently learning to drive it is a godsend. So much safer learning at the slower speed!

never caught speeding, however my speedometer differs from the roadside signs which flash your speed back at you, also my sat nav and my dashcam all vary within two miles. I don’t know which is correct.
