How often do you have dessert after meals?

Was talking to a colleague today who said she makes homemade desserts for the family to have after dinner every evening.

This got me thinking.. and I only really do this if entertaining or if I bake over the weekend for fun. Usually we would just have a few squares of chocolate or something to follow lunch or dinner if we fancied it. I rarely buy desserts that are premade really.

Just wondered what other people do, how often do you have dessert?

Usually have a yogurt/mousse or similar after meals. Or chocolate after lunch. Ice cream on the weekends. Not really a fan of cakes/puddings ever though

Pudding yep probably Saturday and Sunday,
nothing the rest of the week. And you’ll be pleased to know it’s currently proper stodge, jam sponge. Sticky toffee pudding, apple pies, rice pudding etc. I’m a great cook and my kids eat very well; nothing processed in sight. I can’t be arsed with all this fake horror about puddings..

I don’t have any horror about them, I just don’t eat them. I eat enough dinner that I’m not hungry afterwards.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 26/09/2024 18:13

I wasn’t bought up with puddings so I don’t as a rule. I have Xmas pudding at Xmas though.

Dh had diabetes and I’m allergic to cows milk so you learn to limit your expectations.

When people say they never have dessert, does that mean they never eat anything sweet? Or do they mean they never have elaborate desserts but often have chocolate, biscuits, ice cream, etc.?

Skyrainlight · 26/09/2024 18:17

If there aren't people coming over I never have dessert. If I want a treat after dinner I'll have a rice cake with peanut butter and honey and call it dessert and it does the trick.

I don’t eat anything sweet after a meal. I might sometimes have a slice of cake or flapjack at a cafe mid morning or something. Or I have Greek yoghurt, fruit and honey for breakfast sometimes, which is sweet.

Mansionscoldandgrey · 26/09/2024 18:30

I wheel this out after every meal. If I want to make a bit more effort, I'll make something hot with custard.

Nearly everyday.. most days it's a few chocolate biscuits or if it's after I've done a shop then a Magnum ice-cream 😋

LouH5 · 26/09/2024 18:37

Always on a Sunday if I go to my mums, but at home we just have some form of chocolate every night after dinner!

DS might have a yoghurt or a Magnum. DH and I rarely have anything after our meals, either at home or if eating out. We might share a cheese board in a restaurant.
My sweet tooth would be a chocolate bar if I stop at a shop. Never a pudding.
Ice cream, yoghurt, etc. all count as pudding/dessert in my book.

Nesbi · 26/09/2024 18:38

pretty much never unless it is in a good restaurant and sounds particularly enticing!

I started to feel like my weight was creeping up (late 40s) so I stopped snacking on “treats” or having anything sweet after dinner and the weight dropped off again. I feel like my body has told me that it doesn’t need (or can’t use) that sort of stuff now!

Is that it you could at least put some effort in I'd be embarrassed

mamaduckbone · 26/09/2024 18:42

Often (but not always) on a Sunday, usually a crumble. I'll make something if we have guests and on high days and holidays.
During the week we might have a yoghurt, a couple of squares of chocolate or a biscuit with a cup of coffee, mini ice creams are always in the freezer in the summer.
Ds15 is partial to a mug cake and might make himself one of those.
We had home made pudding every night when I was a child but my dad ended up very overweight and died of heart failure, so I'm not sure following that tradition is a great idea.

Calling · 26/09/2024 18:44

If its proper pudding/dessert/afters, then very rarely now. Mind you, I will be baking a birthday cake, soon.

I'm intrigued though that your colleague works full time then goes home and makes home made dinner and dessert for the family in the evening😀are you sure she's not embellishing that?

It's because she's Superwoman 😂

Mablesyruo · 26/09/2024 18:46

Never…only if we go out for a meal.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/09/2024 18:46

Only rarely, unless we’ve got guests.

Maybe once a month I might feel like making an apple crumble, or an Eve’s pudding, or something else simple.

MeganM3 · 26/09/2024 18:47

I do like dessert. I make something probably once a week. A crumble or something quite simple usually.
And perhaps something shop bought once or twice a week. Ice cream or meringue with strawberries, something like that.

So yeah, most evenings we have dessert as a family. I don't make complicated main courses so I don't feel like I'm cooking / baking very much actually.

NahNotHavingIt · 26/09/2024 18:48

Only if we're entertaining really and at Christmas.

We'll sometimes have a piece of fruit, but I don't consider that a dessert.

GiddyRobin · 26/09/2024 18:48

Never. Didn't grow up with it, so it's not something I've ever done. I don't do it in restaurants either - just another glass of wine or a coffee!

Heartbreaktuna · 26/09/2024 19:14

How do all the cakes/biscuits/pastry/dessert brands in the supermarket make any money if every one is only having dessert at Christmas 😂

We just never have anything sweet. We don’t buy biscuits, cakes or chocolates and we’re just not pudding people. I used to love chocolate when I was a teen, but I’ve trained myself out of it.

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 26/09/2024 19:51

Mostly at the weekend
Sometimes the kids bake midweek

BeatsAntique · 26/09/2024 19:56

I cook from scratch every evening, we have pudding every day, and I work full time. Cooking is my nice meditative time between work and evening.

My ‘cooking hour’ between 7 and 8 is one of my favourite times of day!

DilemmaDelilah · 26/09/2024 20:14

We usually have a little something sweet after our evening meal, but it's usually something like a yoghurt or some tinned fruit, or maybe a couple of biscuits with a cup of coffee. We have been indulging in home made crumbles quite a lot in the last month as we have been given apples. I cook up a batch of stewed apples and freeze it in 4 person portions, and make a big batch of crumble topping and keep that in the freezer, so it's easy to bung some topping on some fruit and pop it in the air fryer.
