How often do you have dessert after meals?

Was talking to a colleague today who said she makes homemade desserts for the family to have after dinner every evening.

This got me thinking.. and I only really do this if entertaining or if I bake over the weekend for fun. Usually we would just have a few squares of chocolate or something to follow lunch or dinner if we fancied it. I rarely buy desserts that are premade really.

Just wondered what other people do, how often do you have dessert?

I cook every night after I finish work - we always have starter and usually a pudding after our evening meal. It varies between shop bought and home made, but I'm very partial to the little Gu jars.

You have a starter, main, and dessert everyday?

I literally can't imagine that. Please share some typical day menus.

notacooldad · 26/09/2024 15:59

Only on Christmas day.

BurbageBrook · 26/09/2024 15:59

We usually have dark chocolate so not really a dessert. I skip it if I'm having a glass of wine.

I was a bit 🤯 when I read that but could be a salad for a starter and fruit for dessert 🤔

Sometimes fruit & cream. Very occasionally, a home made cake.

But it's the exception. We always had them when I was a child but I used to walk two miles to school and two miles home. We walked everywhere & used up the calories.

TheDogsMother · 26/09/2024 16:01

Never home made, shop bought Christmas Day and otherwise it's yoghurt or fruit.

RainbowWife · 26/09/2024 16:03

After a Sunday roast, Christmas, birthdays or meal out!

I'm intrigued though that your colleague works full time then goes home and makes home made dinner and dessert for the family in the evening😀are you sure she's not embellishing that?

Who knows, power to her I guess! She said she really enjoys it.

I didn't mean for it to sound like a competitive thing though, I was more just interested in what others do.

I myself wouldn't want dessert every evening (though perhaps if I had a really fast metabolism that would change haha)

We've had blackberry and apple crumble twice this week, because I collected loads of blackberries when I was out for a walk the other day but that's unusual. I'll make a dessert if we have guests, or on special occasions but normally there's nothing more exciting than yoghurt or fruit on offer here.

irregularegular · 26/09/2024 16:04

Pretty much never. Unless we have guest, which is not all that often.
Actually that's not quite true. DH has recently got into making crumble during blackberry seasons. Every 1-2 weeks then?

When the children were young we always had something sweet at the end of the meal. But just fruit or yoghurt or similar. But I have largely got out of the habit now and will have those things at lunch or as a snack but not often after dinner.

That’s so unhealthy! Can’t believe anyone would think that’s healthy. We have yoghurt or fruit, only have a dessert when eating out

If it is commercial sweetened yoghurt, then a homemade dessert such as a fruit crumble could easily be just as healthy, if not healthier.

Surely it depends what you're having. Most posters have said they have healthy desserts on this thread, not triple choc fudge cake with three different types of ice cream!

When I bake it's whatever the mood takes me and usually not a healthy thing hence why I don't do it often! But I guess if youre active and control portion sizes you can still fit dessert in every night if it's important to you. My colleague certainly wasn't overweight so I assume she's not indulging in half a cake each night haha

Very rarely. Only on special occasions or if we’re out at a restaurant. Not particularly for health reasons - we just aren’t a sweet toothed family!

Alittlebitfluffy · 26/09/2024 16:09

I only have starters if entertaining though, unless you count nibbles...

My kids normally have some kind of pudding - fruit, rice pudding, yoghurt, angel delight, occasionally homemade brownies or crumble. If it’s crumble I’ll definitely be having some!!

HansHolbein · 26/09/2024 16:13

I always make pudding on a Monday. Rest of the week it might be a yogurt if we fancy it.

MavisPennies · 26/09/2024 16:14

I want to go to her house for tea!
We have pudding maybe twice a week.

Brownies are my signature dish - but my rule is I only make them if I'm going somewhere - to family, friends bbq etc, then leave the extras there! Kids love them but I certainly couldn't have the extras in the house as I'm not the 'I'll just have one' type of person. Now I'm craving brownies..
Might have to make some for the office!

@Cockawoes Yes, we have a starter, main course, and starter probably five nights a week. If I'm out at an evening meeting for work then I don't usually bother with a starter as I don't usually get home until after 9. We don't have typical menus and I've never planned our meals - I decide what to cook on the day depending on what's in the fridge or freezer. But if you want an example, last night we had a plate of cold salami and other meats, thinly sliced provolone, and stuffed mini peppers for starter, chicken breast in cream, wine and mushroom sauce with rice for our main course, and tiramisu which I bought from the food market the other day. I have no idea yet what we will eat tonight.

exprecis · 26/09/2024 16:15

I do cook dinner from scratch every day despite working - that seems perfectly normal to me. It doesn't take long!

Don't do pudding often at all - we usually have fruit after a meal, sometimes DH will have some chocolate

Pooeyskewy · 26/09/2024 16:16

Christmas and Easter

DramaAlpaca · 26/09/2024 16:16

Almost never, unless it's Christmas or we're out for dinner.

Desserts just aren't really a thing in our house.

Alittlebitfluffy · 26/09/2024 16:17

I usually cook my meals from scratch but do tend to meal plan those. More flexibly for the week rather than on X day we are having X, but dessert is more of a weekend thing for me.

Starters are for entertaining or birthdays here. And December. Often whack out the Camembert several times in December!

I'm really interested to know what kind of starters some of you are having on the regular...

Always dark chocolate after meal during the week.

Will often make a dessert at weekends. Would never occur to me to buy a dessert or a cake - make everything from scratch.

Raveonette · 26/09/2024 16:19

Yogurt 4x a week (buy a pack of 4 - when they're gone they're gone - rest of family eat different yogurts to me). Otherwise fruit or nothing. Proper dessert like cheesecake or apple pie, probably once a month or so.
