How often do you have dessert after meals?

Was talking to a colleague today who said she makes homemade desserts for the family to have after dinner every evening.

This got me thinking.. and I only really do this if entertaining or if I bake over the weekend for fun. Usually we would just have a few squares of chocolate or something to follow lunch or dinner if we fancied it. I rarely buy desserts that are premade really.

Just wondered what other people do, how often do you have dessert?

@Growlybear83 wow kudos to you. That is impressive. If I had to open my fridge and prepare a meal without any pre thought we'd have egg everyday!

Tartoufle · 26/09/2024 16:23

Everyday!

Dinner doesn't feel complete without a pudding.

I had a bowl of ice cream on Monday, an apple yesterday. I try to keep them light generally. I love the little judes ice cream pots as they're under 100 cals but are a little treat.

I also love a crumble at this time of year!

We used to eat a lot more GU pots than we do now, I find them a bit much these days.

Everyday here but then I consider anything sweet after my main to be ‘dessert’ so that includes yoghurt. Sometimes I’ll have biscuits or chocolate. It’s a habit of a lifetime for me, I always need something sweet after my meal!

@Alittlebitfluffy Some of the starters I can think of that we've had in the last couple of weeks include tempura prawns with chilli jam, prawns and avocado in a nice old fashioned cocktail sauce, coquilles St Jacques, little baked cheeses with chill jam (I'm a bit addicted), various cold meats with cheese, lots of stuffed peppers, arancini, butternut squash soup, and lamb pastilla. I cheat and buy the coquilles st Jacques, baked cheeses, and pastilla ready made, but I make most of the other food we eat from scratch.

WiserOlderElf · 26/09/2024 16:26

Christmas, birthdays, other special occasions. That’s it really.

dudsville · 26/09/2024 16:29

My Dh has pudding every day, as well as sweets throughout the day. He's trimmer and healthier than I am. I never have pudding.

SallyWD · 26/09/2024 16:29

Never, unless someone else cooks for me and serves dessert. I got roasted on another thread about this, but I really don't see the point of dessert. I have a big dinner, say 800- 900 calories. I'm always full and satisfied afterwards. Why on earth would I eat another meal after that, full of fat and sugar, when I already feel satisfied? It's not that I'm a puritan who won't eat sugar, but I'd rather have coffee and cake at around 3pm than eat two big calorific dishes at dinner time.

That’s so unhealthy! Can’t believe anyone would think that’s healthy. We have yoghurt or fruit, only have a dessert when eating out

So many people have yoghurt thinking it's healthy but most are anything but!!

Livinginaclock · 26/09/2024 16:32

ShortyWentLow · 26/09/2024 15:44

I pretty much never have afters. Occasionally in a restaurant, but I'm more of a starter person.

Same, I went out for lunch yesterday and had two starters and a side and a gin and tonic

I don't think it is, I just like it, always full fat and usually plain Greek.

Comefromaway · 26/09/2024 16:34

I sometimes haver dessert on a sunday, but not home made. Other than that only when we go to a restaurant.

What I prefer is to have something nice such as a biscuit or slice of cake with a cup of tea mid afternoon.

familyissues12345 · 26/09/2024 16:34

We usually have a pudding on a Sunday, then the rest of the week there's normally chocolate mousse or something like that in the fridge - I don't eat it as I'm veggie, so occasionally I treat myself to something suitable one night during the week

Rarely are the puddings ever homemade!

pickedplock · 26/09/2024 16:36

On a weekend usually something a bit more 'special', the kids like to have something after dinner in the week which will usually be fruit, Greek yoghurt or homemade ice cream.

I don't think it's especially unhealthy especially if they don't snack, my grandmother had pudding every day and raised her kids that way and they were all slim and healthy. I don't obsess over carbs or fat, if it's homemade and eaten in moderation it's fine in my books, and we are all slim and healthy.

Alicana · 26/09/2024 16:36

Never! Only if I’m hosting a party, then it’s usually tiramisu or a pavlova.

Differentstarts · 26/09/2024 16:38

The kids do but not proper fancy homemade desserts usually ice cream, angel delight, jelly, cake (store bought) that sort of thing. Il usually nick one of the kids chocolate bars while their in bed usually a freddo or an animal bar

troppibambini6 · 26/09/2024 16:39

Very very occasionally. I didn't want the kids to get into the habit of expecting something sweet at the end of a meal. There is unlimited fruit if they want it but the usually don't.

Doggymummar · 26/09/2024 16:41

Christmas time, on holiday or at a restaurant

Lakeyloo · 26/09/2024 16:42

Christmas, unless I buy one of those supermarket deals where you ger starter, main, side, dessert and wine for a set price, which is rare.
We do pick at peanuts and Kettle chips in the evenings though which needs to stop 🙄

PussGirl · 26/09/2024 16:42

I cook every day. Pudding at weekends only, homemade crumble or fruit pie or pavlova that often lasts a couple of days, sometimes into Monday.

Karmaisac4t · 26/09/2024 16:42

Maybe 4/5 times a year? Birthdays and Christmas usually

unmemorableusername · 26/09/2024 16:42

I'd be 20st if I did this!

Wonderwall23 · 26/09/2024 16:44

Never at home and I wouldn't want one. Not even a yoghurt or a bit of fruit.

We do eat early at 5ish though. So sometimes I have a bit of chocolate or a pastry before bed....about 4 hours later.

Differentstarts · 26/09/2024 16:45

Growlybear83 · 26/09/2024 15:48

I cook every night after I finish work - we always have starter and usually a pudding after our evening meal. It varies between shop bought and home made, but I'm very partial to the little Gu jars.

Can I come live with you

mindutopia · 26/09/2024 16:47

If we have guests (most of the time but not always, sometimes cba!) or maybe once a week just for us, usually when I have fruit to use up.

mondaytosunday · 26/09/2024 16:48

Rarely had them growing up - maybe a yoghurt or fruit. Now not regularly at all. I often crave something sweet after dinner but it might be a bit of chocolate or a couple biscuits. If I'm doing a proper roast or something then maybe then.
