How often do you have dessert after meals?

Was talking to a colleague today who said she makes homemade desserts for the family to have after dinner every evening.

This got me thinking.. and I only really do this if entertaining or if I bake over the weekend for fun. Usually we would just have a few squares of chocolate or something to follow lunch or dinner if we fancied it. I rarely buy desserts that are premade really.

Just wondered what other people do, how often do you have dessert?

Never make dessert, it's unnecessary.

Finish a meal with fruit/yoghurt/ice cream/cheese if still hungry.

But we often do unnecessary things in life don't we? All the joys are unnecessary, strictly speaking.

We have dessert once a week, usually Saturday night or Sunday lunch. Home made if we have visitors, which is probably most weeks. If it's just us and an easy meal (e.g. steak), we might have a Bonne Maman chocolate mousse or something like that.

I see yoghurt, ice cream and cheese as dessert.

Ice cream is definitely dessert! Anything sweet is dessert in my mind, it doesn't have to be filthy unhealthy. Although, naturally that can be some of the more exciting dessert choices 🍪

Never unless we have people round for dinner/sunday lunch.

I haven't got a sweet tooth and don't like ending a meal on a sweet note.

SquigglePigs · 26/09/2024 17:23

Proper desserts only when we have guests.

DD will often have a little bit of ice cream or small amount of chocolate. Nursery and school rather embed the "dessert after every meal" concept and to be honest I'd rather she had the chocolate then than randomly in the middle of the afternoon!

I'm generally not bothered about desserts apart from ice cream. If we eat out I'd rather spend the money, calories and stomach space on starters like tempura prawns, chicken wings etc!

Once a week maybe? Usually fruit salad. I've made rice pudding in the slow cooker tonight though.

GameOfJones · 26/09/2024 17:26

We have something sweet after dinner once or twice a week, normally that is some chocolate with a cup of tea in the evening or every couple of months DDs and I will bake some biscuits but that may be classed more of a snack than "dessert."

I made a crumble last weekend as we had been blackberry picking but that's probably the first time all year I've cooked a homemade dessert.

Only if having guests over for dinner

We are all quite —fat— well fed enough on the one course - and I don’t like sweet foods so don’t buy anything in.

Berlinlover · 26/09/2024 17:28

Since I was diagnosed with cancer nearly every day. I weigh less than 8 stone so don’t have to worry about my weight anymore.

Kendodd · 26/09/2024 17:31

Another interesting thing about this thread is what people consider pudding to be. Some posters are saying 'no, I never have pudding, only fruit or yogurt' and some posters will say 'yes, I always have pudding, usually fruit or yogurt'.

What you making tonight then after work?

Always cook after work, but never dessert or pudding in the week. Sometimes on a Sunday, but maybe once or twice a month.

We're having pork and apple casserole with new potatoes and veg tonight.

user7654263 · 26/09/2024 17:34

Only ever on Sundays after sunday lunch. Occasionally I will buy the kids something for after the Saturday evening meal.

I grew up in the 70s/80s having pudding after every meal (although working class background and we called it "afters").

I work full time and make home made dinner, it's not an impossibility. Doesn't have to take hours!

Likewise, though I very rarely make puddings midweek. Tonight I'm making a roast vegetable tart for dinner.

That’s so unhealthy! Can’t believe anyone would think that’s healthy. We have yoghurt or fruit, only have a dessert when eating out

Yoghurt or fruit would be counted as a dessert here.

user7654263 · 26/09/2024 17:39

Back in the day pudding was a cheap filler. We also used to have bread and butter with our meals. But we ate things like mince in gravy with potatoes..

Mishmashs · 26/09/2024 17:40

There was a similar thread about a year ago and the amount of people who swore sweet things never touched their lips!

Sometimes the kids have fruit or a honey yoghurt. We have a plum tree and an apple tree so have been eating a lot of stewed fruit and yoghurt/cream/custard recently. I would only ever make a crumble on the weekend. I’ve just this afternoon make a fruit cake and the kids will have a slice after dinner but it only has 70g added sugar and then the sugar from the fruit, but as it’s homemade I don’t mind. I’ll do them baked apples tomorrow night. I rarely buy a readymade cheesecake etc but would make one if we had people to dinner. Sometimes we have some chocolate and about once a month some ice cream.

user7654263 · 26/09/2024 17:48

I think people eat far more sweet or snack things in between meals than they ever used to so it all evens out

FaiIureToLunch · 26/09/2024 17:54

Pudding yep probably Saturday and Sunday,
nothing the rest of the week. And you’ll be pleased to know it’s currently proper stodge, jam sponge. Sticky toffee pudding, apple pies, rice pudding etc. I’m a great cook and my kids eat very well; nothing processed in sight. I can’t be arsed with all this fake horror about puddings..

MingingTiles · 26/09/2024 17:55

Maybe once every couple of months or so, if that. I
do like sweet things sometimes but can’t imagine ever really wanting to eat them after a meal.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 26/09/2024 17:56

Usually every day. My partner bakes a cake or brownies most weekends and we make that last the week. Otherwise a couple squares of dark chocolate.

LoobyDoop2 · 26/09/2024 17:58

I have something sweet after every meal, but most days that’s a couple of squares of chocolate. We have actual pudding, as in something like cheesecake or tiramisu or crumble, probably once every couple of weeks, usually on Saturday night.
I don’t class fruit as pudding, it’s separate. And I eat plain yogurt with fruit every day for breakfast.

DillDanding · 26/09/2024 17:58

Only when we have guests for lunches or dinners.

As children, we both came from families where pudding always followed dinner. But it’s something we don’t do ourselves. We eat out a lot and I don’t think we’ve ever ordered pudding. Not a sweet tooth between us.

Nannyfannybanny · 26/09/2024 18:00

Surely ice cream, fruit, yogurt or cheese is a dessert if eaten after a meal.

Bohomovies · 26/09/2024 18:02

I have dark chocolate (at least 85%) and a cup of tea after my main meal every single day.

In terms of an actual dessert such as cheesecake or pie - very rarely. I might buy some cheesecake maybe once a month. If we eat out I do usually have dessert afterwards. Probably eat out once every three weeks.

Anicecumberlandsausage · 26/09/2024 18:04

As a treat only, for a special occasion.

Normally I have a cup of tea and a biscuit!
