I'll start.

Toothbrush heads for electric toothbrushes - just a bit of plastic!

Reprogramming keys for cars (why does it cost £100s)

Lampshades! I'm trying to find a replacement for one that fell apart recently. £25 for the most boring beige bit of wire and paper faux linen. Anything even vaguely interesting starts at about £45. Anything I actually like starts at £70.

Go to B&M or the like and buy the cheapest one in the size and shape you need. Then to the wallpaper shop - take a good sized sample of what you like and double sided tape it to the outside of your cheap shade. No one will ever know!!!!!

Insanely cheap items is also fun! Big bottle of Vaseline moisturiser, costs a few quid, lasts me a year!

Ooh this needs a thread.

HolyPeaches · 26/09/2024 00:05

Crisps, a potato sliced up and some oil. Looking at you Tyrell’s ( though the truffle ones are amazing)

Rick9plus · 26/09/2024 00:10

New Front doors!!!!

honeyytoast · 26/09/2024 00:14

I can understand why it’s expensive but I resent buying cooking oil

New Front doors!!!!

Yes! £2k

Mountainhowl · 26/09/2024 00:19

Santa visits - don't see any £5 shopping centre Santas anymore, it's all book in advance at £20 a head

Branded painkillers - no different from the 26p packets

Rucksacks - I'm sure I used to be able to get one for less than a tenner, I was shocked when I had to buy my eldest one for high school (primary provided them), they're not made half as well either

Pants. But this may just be perception as I can get a nearly new whole pair of trousers, a hoodie or a coat off vinted for a fiver so I sort of resent paying £20 for a pack of pants!

Tin foil always shocks me, even the cheap stuff is pricey (the cooking foil not just wrapping foil)

Mountainhowl · 26/09/2024 00:21

Oh and camping pitch prices in the last few years!

converseandjeans · 26/09/2024 00:34

Pringles

Tickets to see a big name (Taylor, Oasis etc)

Janie143 · 26/09/2024 00:47

As PP said, dog groomer.

ImustLearn2Cook · 26/09/2024 01:17

Sunglasses. I got sick of the cheap (as in $40 ones) not giving enough shade for my eyes or just being absolutely crap so I went into Sunglass Hut (Australia). The cheapest ones I could find were $130. Most were around $300/400! Why? They’re not prescription glasses? I bought 2 prescription glasses for $200 total. Prescription glasses are cheaper than sunglasses.

Twototwo15 · 26/09/2024 01:21

Bras, they are just a small bit of material.
vets.
private GPs.
Both bras and vets were very reasonable prices elsewhere, but in the UK they are over priced.

Twototwo15 · 26/09/2024 01:26

And Gaviscon.

There's a Freakanomics podcast about this. 🤓

Thanks i'll check it out. No, they weren't bothered, but it's worse depending on where I am in my cycle, so i'm guessing it's fluctuating hormone levels, plus i'm getting old.

If you have a b&m/home bargains close by, they have a significantly cheaper generic brand. I always pick up a pack when I'm in there as DH always forgets to put in his prescription until he's totally run out. They aren't quite as effective but work in a pinch.

Barney16 · 26/09/2024 01:52

Second hand cars.
In fact anything car related, a new clutch madame? That will be £1350. Car insurance. Would you like to renew your premium that has gone up by 300 percent?
Train tickets. Train tickets when you have to stand up the whole way.
The bloody dentist.

Dunnoburt · 26/09/2024 02:04

Sure it's already been said but mayonnaise!!!!!!!

Aplaceinthecold · 26/09/2024 02:08

For the pp who mentioned Vanish Oxyaction try the Astonish brand version.
I buy it from Ocado and Iceland and it's less than half the price of Vanish. Works just as well.

Thistooshallpass24 · 26/09/2024 02:09

Or sodium per carbonate which is the active ingredient in vanish

ChampagneLassie · 26/09/2024 02:27

Housing in many parts of UK. I don’t understand why successive governments (of both colours) have implemented polices (Conservatives - right to buy) and not implemented polices (Labour not taking steps to curb desirability of second + property ownership) & both govs not building enough social housing or putting in step things to make it easier for private development. The status quo of prices was inevitable. Finally we have a government who seem to want to tackle this…but will take years to adjust.
