What the fuck?!!! Maggots

We’ve just opened our front door to a load of maggots. They have dropped in into our hall way, there is an infestation on the front lawn and there’s no reason why!! There’s no food in that area and they literally just appeared cos it’s raining. Why!!

Well…it gets a bit weirder. Woken up this morning to find them………..

all gone! Just disappeared. Apart from the few who manages to get into the house but died in the salt traps, they are all gone!! How freaky is that? These pictures show what I mean about the pond that’s being built. The square bit there is also where the rubbish goes. Just to show you how it all works. Dh has not been over taken and join the maggots which I’m glad.

I saw a Reddit post about a similar situation also last night, Nottingham area I think.

They are unlikely to be the type of maggots from houseflies/bluebottles, that feed on dead meat/rotting food.

These will be the larval form of some fly or beetle (yes, thats what maggots are, lots of creatures have a rather maggoty larval form), that lives just under the soil and feeds on roots or crawls out at night to feed.

The heavy rain, both the waterlogging and the percussive effect on the ground drives them out in massive numbers particularly if that rainfall coincides with them being ready to pupate (which a lot of species will be right about now).

They're seeming to try to come up the path, up your door etc as they're desperate to get out of the water or they'll drown. So they seek higher ground, dryer ground etc.

The type of maggots that eat rotting meat etc will never be far from a corpse or other food source, they can't survive. If the food source is all gone they pupate or just die, they don't leave en masse to look for more, so you can rule out that sort of maggot.

As lots of species have very similar looking larval forms the only way to find out truly what they are would be to keep some, feed them til they pupate and then wait for them to emerge. I assume you won't be bothering!

Thank you. This actually makes a lot of sense and explains why they suddenly just appeared and now disappeared.

Fabulous image!

Percussive makes me think of instruments & them sort of dancing their way along!

@CleopatrasBeautifulNose I can't take the credit, it was @LokiDoki75 I'd never heard it till today 🤣

vickylou78 · 23/09/2024 09:49

Do your neighbours go fishing? Could they have gone fishing but dropped their bucket of maggots on the driveway? My brother goes fishing so buys huge buckets of maggots when he goes

They are??

hevs03 · 23/09/2024 10:02

Not sure if this has been mentioned but for anyone with a maggot problem possibly in the future, use ant powder, it kills them off, whenever I've had maggots in the wheelie bin usually during once or twice during the summer, I jet wash the bin, shake ant powder inside the bin and it kills them.

ponds12 · 23/09/2024 10:15

The ones I had have mainly gone from the path but there are still some hiding in the bin. I think they are trying to stay dry. 😳 They don’t look like the type from house flies. They are much bigger. Still pouring hot water in hope they run away. I’ve seen the odd one on other streets nearby but not as many as last night! Phew 😰!

Helpfully @Soubriquet s DH has a hoovered up sample! See what they pupate into!!!

Soubriquet · 23/09/2024 12:27

They will not pupate! He’s emptied the chamber and then made sure they are dead Grin

This happened on another new.estate.cant remember where I saw it may have been on Facebook news pages but turned out they'd built on top of a landfill. I'd defo get someone to check the drains and they will disappear when it dries up towards morning because they'll go back down to find food. Your hoover will ndefo.need thrown because they'll have laid eggs in the filter by now. We defo need an update to what the council think it is

BiccysR4dunking · 23/09/2024 19:25

Are you on one of the new estates in Lytham St Ann's just near Blackpool op?

Cojones · 23/09/2024 19:25

Scentedjasmin · 22/09/2024 21:55

Sorry, but we need photos!

No, no we really don’t.

Neighbour put a chicken carcass in our shared compost bin, back when you could put food waste in them. Then we got maggots, so many mindless wriggling white things. I poured boiling water over them but they kept on coming 😱😱

Fortunately he realised and cleaned the bin. Still gives me the heebie jeebies.

Softpebbles · 23/09/2024 19:32

If you are a new build is it possible they are leather jackets? Brought out with the wet weather?

Elderflower14 · 23/09/2024 19:56

Many years ago in the summer, I was on the phone to a friend.. I saw a bag on the floor which had a packed lunch box in from the previous week.
I was chatting away to friend and opened lunchbox... It was full of maggots... I screamed "EWWWW MAGGOTS" and dropped the phone which disconnected.. Friend was very concerned and rang me back.
Three years ago, again during a hot summer our bin ended up full of maggots after a bbq. That was horrendous.. We had to empty the bin get the maggots out and kill them and double bag the bags.

Just to say and to manage expectations, that’s a SUDs basin and I imagine it is complete. It is built like that to prevent flooding and slow surface water entering the ground from the estates roads. They sometimes have reed beds to filter the water too.

so when it’s wet they fill up, in the summer they are likely to remain dry. They are measured to accommodate more water than they need so will only get full on occasion.

this isn’t a great explanation of a SUD but gives some info - give it a google! But you’re not likely to get a lovely filled pond with ducks!
