Thank you again for these threads. Not a big poster but always read and follow..
I have found SM ( well all media) difficult this last couple of weeks.
There has been some real pushing on local FB pages re WFA, I get it, I really do BUT not one of those posting ever said a word about the unfairness of the under 25 UC standard allowance, the £20 uplift going, the Covid contracts etc...
The latest one is the Al Fayed story and the guess who was in charge blah blah. Even the Fabricant has posted this one.

In other news honest Bob is going for it. I don't think it is a very wise thing to wear a sweatshirt when jogging with that slogan across when you are hoping to head the opposition. Wonder if that was gifted by a donor?

DuncinToffee · 23/09/2024 20:18

Did Jenrick bring his personal photographer along on his jog?

" Oh but Angela may have a photographer " how very dare she get out of her lane.
And yes of course he did, needs to shout out to where he is heading.

PandoraSox · 23/09/2024 20:24

What is he hoping to achieve, I wonder?

Elodie9 · 23/09/2024 20:27

@itsgettingweird I have really enjoyed the previous threads, still am enjoying them .
I voted Labour in the General election this time around . It is the first time I have ever voted for Labour in a GE.
I just wanted to say that as I think someone is getting a bit leary of me!
I am not a new poster btw either.

It is a bit of a come down after the GTTO vibes

Funnily enough my DP, long time Brexit supporter (and wc white van man tbh), is pretty laid back about how the government is dealing with things. He’s generally fairly satisfied with the path of travel and very much cynical about the media influence. He’s actually corrected a few of his acquaintances about things, especially during the lead up to the GE.
We had huge disagreements about leaving the EU, at one point he was about to vote for UKIP, he’ll admit that politically he was very naive and previously disengaged. Going off him and obviously anecdotal I feel more optimistic that not everyone hates the government and is willing to give them a chance 🤞

True, I don’t want to turn the clock back though!

No way! I would be rather be moaning about Labour than having to put up with another 5 years of the Tories.

I think things might be smoother once the budget is announced and all the stupid rumours can be put to bed.

bombastix · 23/09/2024 20:48

I think you can’t underestimate how one note a lot of the journalists are - a lot of them have zero connections to Labour. Tories were good press with all their little factions, psychodrama and briefings. Easy work, which wrote itself (or in some cases actually written for you)

BIossomtoes · 23/09/2024 20:52

Maybe it’s going to take time for the media to bed down with a new government. It’s absolutely true that their copy wrote itself with the old lot. They’re going to have to work a bit harder now.

What I really love about these threads is that they comfortably encompass a range of opinions. They’re not an echo chamber but we discuss courteously and respectfully and sometimes agree to disagree. They’ve created a safe environment which has developed into a community. This is an example of just how well the internet can work and I really enjoy being part of it.

I agree. I feel safe to dip in and sort of keep up with what's happening politically, here, safe in the knowledge that I'm not likely to encounter someone ranting incoherently about martial law or killing grannies.

RafaistheKingofClay · 23/09/2024 21:13

Half the issue with the budget is that unlike the Tories, it hasn’t been leaked to the press first so if they want to write about it they have to make stuff up. It might take journalists a while to move back from the previous system of tell the media everything first, announce it to parliament as an afterthought, get a slight tap on the wrist by Hoyle for doing it that way.

BIossomtoes · 23/09/2024 21:20

Talking of the Tories, they’ve gone very quiet lately - apart from Jenrick obviously. It’s a bit like when you suddenly realise a child has gone suspiciously silent in another room.

toooldforbrat · 23/09/2024 22:01

I think the more stories the media run the hopefully more people that will realise the complicit silence on the previous govt.

from byline times

Bell Rebeiro Addy MP tells Byline Times' Labour conference event: "In the UK, we've got just three companies that dominate 90% of the national newspaper circulation. There are over 1000 local newspapers in the UK, and 71% of them are owned by just six companies.

"The media should be reporting the news, not controlling it for the benefit of its owners, but that's the situation that Labour find ourselves in."

newnamethanks · 23/09/2024 22:14

Agreed tis often like family on here and when the embarassing uncle drops in, citing his mates down the pub, he should be treated as we treat those uncles. Never take them seriously, they just like to provoke a reaction. Don't over-indulge them by expecting them to take part in a reasoned debate. Best left to themselves until they drift off into muttering slumber in that armchair over there.

DuncinToffee · 23/09/2024 22:49

😂

Tory freebies good
Labour freebies bad

She’s a complete tit. I do hope she’s their new leader.

BestIsWest · 23/09/2024 23:34

I didn’t understand that interview with KB. None of the words seemed to make sense.

Llttledrummergirl · 23/09/2024 23:45

A timely reminder of one of the reasons that Labour won with such a huge majority.

I'm sorry, but as a working mum who has (like most working mums and dads) had to miss some of my dcs school events. I'm out of fucks for someone who has chosen to put her self interest over her family. She didn't have to go to those hustings, she chose to go. As for using her dc as an excuse for freebies- I have no words. Pathetic.

Thank fuck they are a non entity for at least the next 5 years and hopefully beyond.

The problem is all the frothing makes me less sympathetic. I had to turn the radio off this morning because Rachel Burden was giving Rachel Reeves a hard time about the WFA. All I could think about was the extra £600 A MONTH I was expected to magic up to pay for Truss's impact on my mortgage. £200 seems very small beer in comparison, especially when the triple lock means the pensioners will benefit from Trussmageddon.

I know some pensioners are going to suffer and hate it that the debate is so divisive because it means its not possible to have a constructive conversation about how to support them.

I've been banned from the Poverty Watch Facebook page. I had the temerity to say that the new government has hard decisions to make, and while the WFA thing had been handled badly and the threshold needed to be looked at again, there are plenty of comfortably off pensioners who don't need it. This doesn't fit with their narrative of pensioners all freezing miserably in their homes so I was told that I wasn't being very nice. I typed a reply only to discover I'd been banned. I've since discovered some highly disturbing stuff about the admins on that page.
