So for tv show:

When the Street Lights Go On.
Really good and equally as sad.

Films …. Maybe Creep 2004, I just rewatched it all these years later. But maybe it’s not as obscure as I think.

Gomorra, it's Italian with subtitles but an amazing gritty mafia series

Kingdom, on Netflix about MMA. Again pretty gritty American series about MMA fighters and their personaly lives

@Cheeseballer The Tribe was awesome !
The early era of Channel 5 was just fantastic.
Who watched Sunset Beach?

I loved Sunset Beach! It was so bad, it was brilliant!

redtrain123 · 17/09/2024 22:19

First Born, I remember it well. The boy was called Gor, who was half human, half gorilla. I found it very chilling, and whenever I see anything to do with gorillas, I think of it. For some reason, this series had a huge impact on me (and I feel unsettled even writing this).

Big John, Little John , and if you remember it, you’re probably singing the theme tune now.

That's so funny,, my brain automatically read those words in song before I finished the sentence 😂

The Painted Veil.

Oh good lord, it's beautiful, heart-breaking, tragic and so erotic. No one's ever heard of it

Oh I love that film!

Kids tv shows from many years ago, I only know 1 other person who remembers them

Greenclaws
Knightmare

I remember both of these. No-one else I've asked remembers Green Claws.

Film...dancing through (could be in) the dark. I still remember the song. About a hen night in I think Liverpool and about her and the singer

Charles Dance was in it wasn’t he? I remember being quite traumatised as a kid by this.

AdaColeman · 17/09/2024 22:27

Yes it's true that The Onedin Line was watched by everyone at the time. But that was in the 1970s, fifty years ago. So it works for the title of the thread........you think no one on here has heard of since the majority of Mumsnetters weren't born fifty years ago.

Raise the Red Lantern amazingly evocative setting for this film, shot in a real family compound, now a museum.

Logan's Run A fab classic, great cast including Michael York & Jenny Agutter. I like the ruins of Washington used as a symbolic backdrop.

TV - a lot of people have never heard of Third Watch.
Made by the same folks as ER (there was even a cross over episode) but shown at random o'clock on Channel 4. Six seasons but 2 only ever got released on DVD due to music copyright issues.
It was about Police, Fire and Paramedics in Manhattan. Season 3 was due to start in September 2001 but had to be delayed and plots completely changed and re-filmed and a whole new episode 1 filmed.
They set the first episode on September 10th - an ordinary sunny day where not much happens but we (the viewers) knew exactly what was coming.
It was very emotional.

Third Watch was awesome, had quite a few characters from other shows in it that I loved too. Sunset Beach 🙈😆 Happy Days 😁 Starsky and Hutch 🚗 Felt like it was an all star cast!

@tac10 I loved Shortland Street.

I haven't thought of that show for years. As soon as I read your post, the theme tune instantly popped in my head 😂 "is it you or is it me... "

Yes, Charles Dance.

Just looked it up. It was broadcast in 1988, so I was a teen, so not a youngster. If I recall, it was all so plausible.

AHFBridport · 17/09/2024 22:31

TV - The Silver Buckle (was a Schools/Colleges drama about Mayflower settlers)
Film - I Love You, Alice B Toklas

@autienotnaughty My Two Dads !!
Why didn't they just do a paternity test?

This was discussed in one episode, they decided it would break her heart and also the heart of the one who wasn’t the dad so chose not to. But I get that was after she’d been living with them a while, maybe they should have done it on day 1.

@tac10 I loved Shortland Street.

I loved watching it - especially Martin Henderson (swoon) and Temuera Morrison - can’t believe he went for SS to then play Jake (the muss) in once were warriors. He is such a great versatile actor

Dacin' Thru The Dark - I loved this! Want to watch it again now.

NobbyNeighbour · 17/09/2024 22:32

Silas, a kids tv show. Sure it must have been dubbed from German possibly?

AHFBridport · 17/09/2024 22:33

Did Silas run away to the circus?
Also: Oskar, Kina and the Laser

NobbyNeighbour · 17/09/2024 22:35

And continuing my theme of foreign horsey kids tv shows, Nonni and Manni set in Iceland.

NobbyNeighbour · 17/09/2024 22:37

🤣

SisterAgatha · 17/09/2024 22:42

I’ve seen a lot of the films but only a few of the series mentioned here (some of them are fairly well known I think but I am mid 40’s)

The film I remember watching a lot as a kid is Rusalochka. And another one with the man from MASH, and the mum from the exorcist who meet once a year to have a night together, Same Time Next Year.

Jacob’s Ladder is well known but should be held in higher regard, I remember loving it.

SisterAgatha · 17/09/2024 22:43

And loads of you will know this - Peter No Tail ♥️

SisterAgatha · 17/09/2024 22:47

And the Triplettes of Belleville while I remember 🤣
