So having had a really not great time on online dating...I've finally started to speak with someone I would like to impress. Ladies he sings, he bakes bread, he reads he's the main parent. I'm in heaven.
Id like to give him a book at our first date....he likes most genres...nothing like super seedy tho as he's quite wholesome...what can I give him that will melt his heart so I get to keep him forever?
Or at last so he looks back and thinks that was cool.
Help please x

Christ no OP.…he’s got to try and win YOU, not the other way around.

This. I gave my now DP a link to cabin pressure and told him to listen to episode 1 and if he didn’t like it to forget it 🤣happy to say by 3 months in he knew all the episodes and was playing the travelling lemon and yellow car!

NasiDagang · 16/09/2024 21:34

You might not even fancy him in real life.

merryandbrightdelight · 16/09/2024 21:36

Matt Haig books are really popular.

I once ordered 'Reasons to Stay Alive' on my kindle, forgot it was linked to DH Amazon account, and had him in a total flap worrying about me! So maybe don't give him that one 🙈

I only bought it because I suffer with bad anxiety and it was recommended to me!

sweetpickle2 · 16/09/2024 21:37

Agree with others that you’re putting a lot of pressure on someone you’ve never met. So what if he bakes bread? Plenty of weirdos do.

I truly hope you’re as enamoured with him once you’ve met and dated for a bit, but it’s too early for books I think.

Healingsfall · 16/09/2024 21:38

How long have you been talking online?

IfOnlyTheyWent · 16/09/2024 21:41

He sings, he bakes bread, he reads
Get him Death and the Penguin by Andrey Kurkov. He'll love it I bet.

JustDeserts · 16/09/2024 21:42

I thought this was going to be about a puppy. 🐕

The Book Theif Marcus Zuzak
The Goldfinch (can't remember author!)
Perfume (to suss out if he's crazy)

My DH gave me Perfume to read when we first met….couldn’t get into it at all and really felt under pressure to read it. Obviously not enough to be an issue as I married him anyway.

With all due respect I'd take a long deep breath before jumping in with both feet.
You dont know him yet.
Act in haste repent at leisure is seen all over Mumsnet threads.
Cool and friendly, because its your FIRST date!
And even if he isnt a manipulator doing the hard sell, you could very well frighten him off if you're overeager.

Wasn’t it Kurt cobain’s fave book?

RaspberryParade · 16/09/2024 21:46

@Conniebygaslight He gave you a book about a serialkiller on your first date?
I can see why your name is Conniebygaslight...😂Freud would have a field day

WhoOfWhoville · 16/09/2024 21:46

Ahhh, you want to use the book recs of all these mumsnetters to trick him into thinking you’re someone who reads books?

Because if it was anything other than that you’d already have a book in mind that you love that would have driven this entire gesture.

Maybe this guy actually deserves someone who isn’t faking their personality.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/09/2024 21:48

Softlywoven · 16/09/2024 21:23

No book on first date.

Read a book, popular one he might have read.

The Kite Runner is excellent for later gift

For the rape and public stonings? 🧐
(if I remember correctly)

QueenCamilla · 16/09/2024 21:49

That's quite a freaky behaviour. I really would not want something to take home from a first date.

Pebbles16 · 16/09/2024 21:49

Cosycore · 16/09/2024 20:26

I haven’t read it myself but

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig was described to be as being life altering.

you might get some better suggestions in a bit though

Love this book, a winner

RaspberryParade · 16/09/2024 21:50

@WhoOfWhoville What a stupidly malicious post

Gremlins101 · 16/09/2024 21:50

The best book I read recently (perhaps ever) is Demon Copperhead, by Barbara Kingsolver

thegrumpusch · 16/09/2024 21:51

You Are Here by David Nicholls

It’s about suicide! Definitely not that!

Give him a book you love. Although I think giving a book to someone on a first date is a bit intense!

MonsteraMama · 16/09/2024 21:51

House of Leaves. Come at him with a wildcard.

Doubledded123 · 16/09/2024 21:51

Bullshit anntanae ! Definitely need these

Really?

The OP might as well just go and choose one of the top 10 best sellers in Waterstones for all the value in this gesture of a book she hasn’t actually read, but is meant to “melt his heart”.

I doubt his heart will melt at her ability to order a £7.99 book off Amazon.
