Migrants - just curious......

sunshinewithrain · 15/09/2024 22:18

Are they genuinely so desperate that they will get in a rubber dingy to cross a dangerous sea to get to England?
OR
Are they 'sold' a dream?
OR
A mixture of both! And we don'it understand it properly .......
It's so sad all these people dying trying to cross the sea in such a dangerous way ......

Yes - hotels are for the thousands and thousands (really) who haven’t yet got LTR/leave to remain which triggers the right to benefits.

When they get LTR, migrants go straight to the top of the housing list as they’re homeless. That’s what annoys people, cos they do overtake local families and nab nice new places for life.

In London illegal migrants all want a permanent home for life near where their hotel is, which is staggeringly expensive for the councils, what with the housing crisis at its worst here.

We’ve had people moved to
Swindon, much better quality of life, bigger houses and benefit payments go farther, but they were very disappointed.

Would you cross the sea in a rubber dinghy if you weren't feeling desperate, OP?

but then why not the next safe county why travel half way across the world in some cases ?

Supersimkin7 · 16/09/2024 00:25

In 🇬🇧 benefits are very low but they’re for life.

The British are seen as nice - clearly migrants haven’t seen the squeaky shriekers on this thread.

5byfive · 16/09/2024 00:26

Whenever deaths are reported it is overwhelmingly women and children that died.

Why is this?

We know from photos of boats that land that the number of women and children are a tiny percentage of total passengers.

Are the weaker passengers regularly being off loaded over the edge to keep these boats afloat and we just don’t hear about it.

My uncle came over by dingy many moons ago, he married my aunt and is now living in America. He said was frightening coming over but he wasn't running from war or anything like that.

He's from Ghana.

They had already received asylum in France

No they haven't. Why do you think that?

Small boats are not that dangerous when you think of how many crossings there daily.

Risk seen a bit like a plane ride.

Busybeemumm · 16/09/2024 00:34

British Empire. " They come here as we were there". Britain at one point 'owned' a quarter of the earth.

The English language spread.
Most people arriving speak some English and come from an ex colony. They have grown up learning stories of the UK and most have family connections here.

If they are fleeing war and persecution naturally they would come to what they perceive as their motherland.

British bought this on itself by it's colonial own past and so here we are.

I work with all types immigrants including refugees and asylum seekers and can confidently say a lot of it is economically driven. Britain has a generous welfare state which is attractive to people, especially those claiming asylum, as they get put up in decent housing and given basic funds to live. I don't blame the people, only the system which allows them to do it. It isn't fair on the local.population who get moved out of areas they've always lived for generations to make way for them.

Don't you think a civilised country should put up in decent housing and the basics of life people fleeing war, torture, persecution?

You claim they have received asylum in France. That's not the case.

A lot if those immigrants travelling to UK won't recieve asylum in any European country. Just trying their luck.

Dweetfidilove · 16/09/2024 00:41

They are not here to exist on £400 per month, because they tend to have many responsibilities behind them.
We can't label people economic migrants while claiming they're here to avail themselves of the generous benefits system. That's not economics that makes sense.

But France hasn't gtanted them asylum. Most like they have refused them and they try their luck in UK.

Europe should do so much better returning people. It's the only thing to do. So many males from Muslim countries between 20 and 40 yo chasing a dream. The dream of money. Nothing else.

They are desperate. They are fleeing war, famine, rape and a whole host of other crimes that are unimaginable to us who live a very pleasant life. They come to the U.K. because they know someone close who is here which provides them with some level of safety. Not because they fancy a nice little crossing on the channel.

I volunteer for local children who live in poverty. By default that means I also support children who are asylum seekers.

And FWIW my grandparents crossed the channel (and the bay of biscay) as refugee children fleeing Franco. They were so traumatised by that crossing they could never speak of it. It’s not for the faint hearted.
