Body Quirks

When I feel very upset, something twinges quickly and sharply in my left arm. Just next to the inner elbow. No idea why.

What foibles does your body have?

I have the photic reflex (never knew it was called that until I read this thread) if I look at a bright sky.

If I eat cheddar cheese, I get a pins and needles fizzing sensation in my cheeks (been having this over 40 years since I was a child). It happens less if the cheese is cooked.

If I hear a roaring motorbike engine, I feel very disconcerted and feel like crying.

Edited to say I’ve just thought of another one: my tears are excruciatingly painful and make my eyes sting, This has been happening since I was a teen. If my eyes start watering, they sting badly, but if I ever properly cry (not often), the stinging feeling ‘washes away’ and stops hurting,

There's a little patch by one of my shoulder blades that is always either numb or itchy. It's been itching so much lately that I've made scratches all over that part of my back, as I use whatever's to hand to help reach it (knife, scissors, nail file ...) 😳 My grandmother reckoned it's where I was touched by a witch as a baby!

One of my hips 'goes' without warning - it feels as if there's nothing there, just an empty space. It's made me fall a few times.

I've had dozens of cysts on the left side of my body, none at all on the right.

My lady bits get a sharp cramp occasionally 😐

That’s fanny daggers.

InMySpareTime · 17/09/2024 06:18

When I scrunch my eyes closed my ears rumble.
Clompy hips also, and when I sit cross-legged I settle into a position that makes both feet go dead.
I can put the soles of my feet together when my legs are straight.
When my feet are relaxed, none of my toes touch each other, there are visible gaps between all toes. I didn't know this was weird until I sent someone a photo of my lockdown foot tan.

Giggorata · 17/09/2024 07:22

I get the collar bone pain after the first drink of wine or beer sometimes too, so weird. It really hurts sometimes.

When I massage my scalp, I get a vibrating sensation and sound in one ear, not the other.

I get the vagina clench, when DC are hurt, or talk about being hurt.

If anyone blows a raspberry, I get a horrible sensation in the middle of my forehead and I have to press my fingers to the spot.

HeartandSeoul · 16/09/2024 23:50

I said the same thing earlier one! I have a fizzy ears twin 😁.

It's so bizarre isn't it! Almost like a fizzing trickling down, it's loud too! Well to my ears it is!

It’s really loud! Feels like I’ve poured a can of coke* in my ears 😬

(*other brands available 😁)

Runki · 17/09/2024 08:37

Sometimes when I am just about to fall asleep, I get a really sudden, loud sound in my ears, like a very short SCHLOOOOOM noise (for want of a better description). It makes me jump and then I am wide awake again. It's sometimes accompanied by a half dream of falling off a pavement.

Runki · 17/09/2024 08:39

@Giggorata Wow, that raspberry one is quite something, isn't it? Can I ask does it happen if you yourself blow a raspberry?!

Runki · 17/09/2024 08:41

@AppleDumplingWithCustard I get the tingling armpits too! I thought I was the only one! They tingle so much that sometimes it actually hurts.

Strobbery · 17/09/2024 08:46

If I read aloud - especially children’s stories - I start sobbing. Even if I am not in any way emotionally engaged with the text. This was problematic as a mother of 5 and primary school teacher!

I was once reading out the minutes of a boring meeting I took at work, and had to fake cough a lot to mask the sobs. I was excused as they thought I wasn’t well.

MrsEmilyGilmore · 17/09/2024 09:35

I always sneeze twice, and I need to sneeze but it won't happen, I lightly rub the crown of my head and it happens almost instantly

@Ladyof2024 I have that same thing. No idea how I found out but have been able to do it since I was a kid!

My right ankle gets this weird, tense, uncomfortable feeling every few hours - I have to swivel my foot in a circle and it makes a very loud crack and the feeling goes away.

Also, if I scratch above my left elbow, it feels like someone has stuck a sharp pin into my stomach near my belly button.

Giggorata · 17/09/2024 10:04

@Runki, just experimented and no, it doesn't.
But I really hated doing it and won't be adding it to my repertoire of rude and derisory expressions.

Yozzer87 · 17/09/2024 10:10

My index finger aches when I feel sorry for myself. And my nostrils sometimes sting when I wash my face and I get water round the edges if them. These are both things I've had since I was a kid.

SydneyCarton · 17/09/2024 10:20

Singing makes me cry too! I also sneeze when I open a bottle of fizzy drink (I assume it’s some sort of reaction to the gas??), and if I see someone get hurt either in real life or on television I get a sort of shock/thrill sensation over my body, as if the impact has happened to me.

If I see anyone get hurt, or about to get hurt, I get that shock sensation in my pelvic area. It’s only really come on since I’ve got to my 50’s though.

I also get a really weird sensation in my thumb if it gets cold. It started after doing C25k ending in December and very cold temperatures. I think I literally froze the nerves. I now refer to it as my frostbite thumb.

I know it doesn’t sound particularly dignified, but putting your folded hands underneath your bum can get you at a better angle for the test and make it more comfortable.

Thanks for the suggestion. That position makes sex easier too but I hadn't thought of it for the smear, great idea.

landris · 17/09/2024 14:18

Miniopolis · 17/09/2024 04:32

It’s your photic reflex, genetic!

Partly that I agree, but I also have pupils that don't close up in bright light as much as other people's do, for some odd reason. I wear sunglasses even on cloudy days.

Spiderey · 17/09/2024 19:37

@Ozgirl75

Sometimes the inside of my mouth kind of peels away. It’s not unpleasant.

Same! It's a very thin layer of the inside of my cheeks and as you say it's not unpleasant. Glad it's not just me!

I get the fizzing with some cheeses but it's at the sides of my nose and it sweats too!

I've started having restless legs as well, or feet, every time I'm almost falling asleep. I have to shake them or I can't relax it's weird

Try night-time magnesium. And maybe check for if you are low on iron. I had RLS for 14 yrs since being pregnant. Since taking horse-pill sized magnesium combined with prescribed meds for anemia I no longer have RLS. Oh and doing stretches before bed helps too

Garlictest · 17/09/2024 22:02

This thread's totally confirmed my view that people are endlessly fascinating! Nice one, OP.

Spiderey · 17/09/2024 22:13

When I'm very tired and desperately trying to stay awake I sometimes get a loud buzzing noise in my skull. 💀 It jolts me back awake but doesn't feel very nice. I usually take myself off to bed at that point. I think it's my internal alarm telling me to get to bed!

I used to get this with certain toothpastes.

WingBingo · 17/09/2024 22:21

@Goatblu me too!

I quite enjoy removing it
