Odd things that have happened at dusk in the UK.

I was driving back to my campsite from Lizard's Point to St Ives at dusk, and my sat nav kept directing me onto narrow B roads. One particular turn felt wrong from the start. We were quite high up, and the lane grew narrower and more rugged as we went further down. The road eventually turned into a rubbly track, with steep banks on both sides, dense undergrowth, and trees leaning over, giving it an eerie atmosphere. I grew anxious, worried that another car might come from the opposite direction since reversing would have been impossible. I was also convinced that one side was either a cliff edge or a steep drop. The thought of being ambushed crossed my mind, especially since I had my teenage daughter with me.

Suddenly, the sat nav cut out, and we found ourselves at a dead end with a fjord at the bottom. The road ended abruptly, swallowed by thick undergrowth and forest on the other side. An overwhelming sense of dread washed over me—an indescribable feeling of pure evil. I was terrified.

It took everything I had to reverse back up the hill, and it felt almost impossible to make it out. When I finally reached the top and got back onto the road, I stopped for a moment to compose myself. Just then, a car emerged from that very lane and sped off. I’ve never gotten onto an A road so quickly in my life.

I have fallen down the most marvelous rabbit hole…www.englishfords.co.uk/gallery_592777.html

Fabulous. Now we just need to work out which are between Lizard Point and St Ives.

Yes I agree op. I couldn't even see if I was going to reverse into the bank. I could see nothing. I had to drive forward to straighten up a few times. Also scared another car would come up behind me and I'd have to get out to explain why I was reversing. Could of been a pervy or angry man. That's a genuine valid fear. Imagine meeting a pervert with road rage alone on the country road dead in the woods? Nope. Nope. Nope.

um you just drove into the sea no?

Is this the new Savernake Forest attempt?

Shit me up that (SF story, not this one)

@Spomb Why would the sat nav send me down a dead end?

Obviously for the driving mistakes in your past life.

DyslexicPoster · 13/09/2024 23:46

Since all our village Ford excitement I started watching cars, get stuck in them on you tube. That's one way to loose a hour of your life. I have never driven through ours. However much it rains it never seems to get deeper as you walk over it on a bridge. Again I'd rather take a five mile detour

Did the car look like this by any chance?

Wondergoldenlight · 13/09/2024 23:48

What are YOU suggesting op? That the sat nav was possessed and sent you down a malevolent turning that you simply reversed out of. Only to reveal a hidden car that…drove off.

Haha no!

There was obviously a turn off to another track that you missed

Too busy being scared!

Even reading your comment gave me shivers down my spine.

What happened at savernake again?

I have vague recollections of a thread..

Macarena1980 · 13/09/2024 23:53

I had some experiences like this driving in North Yorkshire on holiday earlier this year, it’s terrifying, but isn’t the whole point of a ford that you can drive over it? Depending on how high the water is? Was the other car some kind of off road vehicle eg: Range Rover.

pottymouth40 · 13/09/2024 23:53

Savernake Forest I’d in classics I think

This was the work of a previously banned poster.

Brilliant.

And I love the Christine reference.

But...

I had similar on Dartmoor, I had just delivered to a village in Dartmoor, all roads completely normal, I came out the way I went in following Sat Nav.
Suddenly I found myself on a narrow road with high sides like a valley, it felt like every second the road was getting smaller .
2 minutes later I was back on the normal road, no idea what happened.

Something similar happened to me in wales, country road sat nav took us down. Only enough space for one car at a time, suddenly there was a car parked in the road with hazard lights on. No one in the car but plastic all over the car as if to protect the insides of the car. Never reversed so fast back to the main road…

rewilded · 13/09/2024 23:54

No turns. Steep drop one side and dense wall and thickets the other side trees etc dry stone walls. I was looking for a turning as I wanted to turn and get the hell out of there!

Now that’s quite freaky.

pottymouth40 · 13/09/2024 23:55

Nooooooooo😱

Now I’m going to have to read it again…and it’s nearly witching hour…

Willing to bet it was a 2001 Vauxhall Astra held together chiefly with gaffer tape 😆

My nerves would not have held out on that one.

I did see two women on a country lane once, spraying the boot and insides of the car with antibac and they both had gloves on.
