Odd things that have happened at dusk in the UK.

I was driving back to my campsite from Lizard's Point to St Ives at dusk, and my sat nav kept directing me onto narrow B roads. One particular turn felt wrong from the start. We were quite high up, and the lane grew narrower and more rugged as we went further down. The road eventually turned into a rubbly track, with steep banks on both sides, dense undergrowth, and trees leaning over, giving it an eerie atmosphere. I grew anxious, worried that another car might come from the opposite direction since reversing would have been impossible. I was also convinced that one side was either a cliff edge or a steep drop. The thought of being ambushed crossed my mind, especially since I had my teenage daughter with me.

Suddenly, the sat nav cut out, and we found ourselves at a dead end with a fjord at the bottom. The road ended abruptly, swallowed by thick undergrowth and forest on the other side. An overwhelming sense of dread washed over me—an indescribable feeling of pure evil. I was terrified.

It took everything I had to reverse back up the hill, and it felt almost impossible to make it out. When I finally reached the top and got back onto the road, I stopped for a moment to compose myself. Just then, a car emerged from that very lane and sped off. I’ve never gotten onto an A road so quickly in my life.

A computer error in the car? I've had the same in Wigan.

You're no bloody fun 😆

I did try emulating seal song to tempt the seal in to come and see us. But I don't speak seal very well, so may have inadvertently summoned something else instead.

That's definitely what happened. Like when I went into Selfridges hoping to bump into Joanna Lumley or Kristin Scott Thomas, and I saw a Chuckle Brother.

OK, but hear me out, maybe there's something going on with the infrasound theory? On Thursday we were going to walk home through woods but when we got there the feeling was all .. off, it felt malevolent just being stood at treeline and nothing could induce me to walk that way, even though we've gone that way loads of times before even that morning! Also southwest UK so maybe somethings going on here at the moment...

Try living in my house now the nights are drawing in.

We have maize on three sides. Like the house Mel Gibson's character lived in in Signs.

How the hell do you sleep at night!? How!?

Fescue · 15/09/2024 16:16

It might look and sound scary, but it doesn't have a scary feel. That's the difference. Plus we are not in the mid-west of the US, but down to earth UK with all mod cons and t'internet streaming through a hole in the wall.

The spooky thing is when I am on a slight rise looking down at the maize and you see the tops of some plants moving sixty feet or so away. Then I realise it must be the dog which has run off.

Then the dog pops out of the maize fifty degrees to my left. And the maize is still moving.

Stop it! Now! 😫😂

I had a really similar experience on Bodmin last November! It was just as that horrific storm Ciaran was brewing up, so I was against the clock trying to find where I was staying for a wedding as it was getting dark. Reversing back up a glorified pathway feeling I was being swallowed by trees and foliage 😅 I think the locals just know the roads better and what looks like a dead end to us is a perfectly normal route to them!

I think Lozza has a point. We had a friend over from Canada and I drove down a small lane as a short cut to collect him and OH from the local rural pub. (I knew the road well) It has grass and moss growing up the middle of it and you have to drive slowly as it catches the underneath of your car. Potholes you could fall down. High hedges either side. It's not uncommon around now for the brambles to whip out into the road.

He actually videoed out of the front window and sent it to his son; he couldn't believe it was an actual road. Only believed me when I popped out onto the main road. There was no way he would have accepted this was a road that was in use until I drove on it.

Is this the new Savernake Forest attempt?

Shit me up that (SF story, not this one)

That Savernake post was truly scary!

There are many dark lanes turning to rubble and a dead end surrounded by woods here in N Wales. I’m perfectly happy with those, but put me in a city like London and that terrifies me, I drove around once and never again. I guess it’s what you’re used to.

That’s pretty much been our experience of the sat nav in Cornwall this weekend. It’s why I carry a map. There’s nothing mystical or surprising about it.

Kloot · 15/09/2024 22:28

As strange as this sounds, I have driven down that road! We were going from St Ives back to the Lizard but it’s 100% the same road. The ford appears from nowhere. Anyway, we stopped, checked it was passable (it is), drove through it and continued home. Sorry but no piskies, just a weird, lonely old road through a woods.

Ooh, I have my own mysterious Cornish dusk anecdote to add now.

Went to Lizard Point last night with the new boyfriend because he had never seen a seal, and I have never been there without seeing at least one snouty sea doggo bimbling around.

It was beautiful. Magnificent sunset. Beautiful moonrise. The anticipated seal (although she didn't come inshore to have a look at us as they sometimes do- too busy fishing or not in the mood for humans).

We were the last ones left in the car park, completely on our own. We went to drive away, and his immaculately maintained 2 year old car started flashing up with all kinds of fearsome messages, started making weird noises and couldn't make it up the slight hill from the car park. He disconnected and reconnected the battery and it started again fine. Stopped and started several times in the course of the evening and it was absolutely fine.

That's definitely mystic Cornish dusk vibes at work on the electrics (nods sagely).

Ufo in the area perhaps?

SashaPicklepops · 16/09/2024 00:43

I went to Cornwall this year for the first time, on a holiday. I couldn't leave there quick enough tbh, it had a bad feeling about it, that we stayed 3 days instead of the week we had booked in for. I can't explain it, never felt like that about a place before, but I had a feeling of dread yhe whole time I was there.

I think it's well known that Cornwall is partially in another dimension

Partially, my lover?

I'll bet any amount of money that was Gweek Ford (slightly outside Gweek)?
