Odd things that have happened at dusk in the UK.

I was driving back to my campsite from Lizard's Point to St Ives at dusk, and my sat nav kept directing me onto narrow B roads. One particular turn felt wrong from the start. We were quite high up, and the lane grew narrower and more rugged as we went further down. The road eventually turned into a rubbly track, with steep banks on both sides, dense undergrowth, and trees leaning over, giving it an eerie atmosphere. I grew anxious, worried that another car might come from the opposite direction since reversing would have been impossible. I was also convinced that one side was either a cliff edge or a steep drop. The thought of being ambushed crossed my mind, especially since I had my teenage daughter with me.

Suddenly, the sat nav cut out, and we found ourselves at a dead end with a fjord at the bottom. The road ended abruptly, swallowed by thick undergrowth and forest on the other side. An overwhelming sense of dread washed over me—an indescribable feeling of pure evil. I was terrified.

It took everything I had to reverse back up the hill, and it felt almost impossible to make it out. When I finally reached the top and got back onto the road, I stopped for a moment to compose myself. Just then, a car emerged from that very lane and sped off. I’ve never gotten onto an A road so quickly in my life.

I think it's well known that Cornwall is partially in another dimension.

Can confirm.

@Spomb Why would the sat nav send me down a dead end?

Sat navs send people to all sorts of places!

Cobblersorchard · 13/09/2024 23:21

Are you from “the city” by any chance @rewilded?

One mans impassable ford and forest is another mans green lane with a large puddle and a hedge that needs topping…..

What does Google maps say?

You did conduct the appropriate pagan sacrifices before you came down here OP?

Honestly, I can't believe the amount of people who still take the risk and travel in the Celtic fringe without adequate psychic insurance.

Sat navs send people to all sorts of places!

Indeed, they seem to enjoy sending the drivers of massive Dutch articulated lorries down the tiny lanes to Maenporth beach, for example. Poor bugger.

Have you never seen signs saying "ignore sat nav" ? They aren't perfect,

Have lived in Cornwall as very long time and there are some very narrow lanes I feel a bit light headed navigating anticipating the reverse if I meet another car, wouldn't call them other worldly.

DragonflyFairy · 13/09/2024 23:24

Same thing happened to us in france. Sat nav (Google) showed a road. It wasn't. It got progressively worse - a pot holed track covered in brambles/hedge etc. Ended up a dead end and a huge alsatian ran at the car out of nowhere, then ran off again. Terrifying. Also meant we had no choice but to reverse back down the lane from hell as we had no signal and we definitely weren't getting out!

I am terrified of dogs at the best of times so God knows what we would have done had the car got stuck!

It wasn't dusk in the UK though, it was lunchtime in France.

I’ve been down that very lane near St Ives, there’s a tunnel under the Ford. You must have missed it. 😁

Infrasound? No judgement from me - Cornwall is a strange place.

We have a Ford in our village. It's the focus of the FB group ( ford focus 😂) honestly the village chat centers around it. It's one way, people wet themselves with glee if a Tesla gets stuck etc.

We also have some poop inducing country lanes. Many a time I have felt the urge to just say fuck this and get out and walk. Once I was on a country lane. Half a mile with no where to pull in, no room to turn and came across a fallen tree. I had to reverse in the pitch black half a mile. It honestly was right up there on shiting myself experiences. Horrible. I regreted watching Blair witch. I drive through a common on a country lane to get onto a major A road. At night I sometimes take a longer route just to avoid it. Knowing there's just miles of woodland all around is creepy at night.

Agreed! Learnt to drive in the lanes of deepest, darkest Peru Sussex, and have no fear but my town friends are horrified by steep banks, sudden twists and a bit of unkempt hedging.

Elphame · 13/09/2024 23:33

I saw one of the big cats at dusk whilst crossing the Mendips at dusk. Single track lane.

I saw what I initially assumed was a very large dog coming down the centre of the road towards me. There was something about the way it was moving though that wasn’t dog like. I slowed to a stop and as it got closer I realised that it was actually a huge cat. Size of a puma. It stopped just in front of the car, looked at me then turned and melted into the hedgerow in that way cats do.

Exactly trying to reverse up a narrow, rubbly, twisty - turny hill for half a mile with a steep drop to one side and a bank the other is no fun! Up there with top 10 worst days.

I had a really similar experience on Bodmin last November! It was just as that horrific storm Ciaran was brewing up, so I was against the clock trying to find where I was staying for a wedding as it was getting dark. Reversing back up a glorified pathway feeling I was being swallowed by trees and foliage 😅 I think the locals just know the roads better and what looks like a dead end to us is a perfectly normal route to them!
