Non-fake, stable genius thanks to @Crucible for the new thread title.

Seniors' special today.*
They’re eating the dogs!
They’re eating the cats!
They’re eating the pets!...
So do you want fries with that cat? (*Apologies to non-MAGA seniors)

In other news, the swing states continue to be too close to call and it looks like it's going to be a nail-biting, buttock-clenching, hand-wringing 50 days to the election. (or thereabouts)
Increase your anxiety with this handy countdown 😭

I think for his own safety, Trump should be given a new identity and name.
Cut his hair, bleach it white, drop the bronzer, some new Hawaian shirt, and Bingo! He's a retired air conditioning salesman called Chuck, living in Boise Idaho and we never have to hear from him again.
Bliss

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 16/09/2024 08:54

The more people take pot-shots at him, whether or not he and his minions have paid them to do it, the more of a martyr he becomes in his followers' eyes, and he might even gain support from those sitting on the fence who are persuaded somehow that the Democrats are behind it.

If this was the second attempt on Trump the assassins are not very good missed both times.

prettybird · 16/09/2024 09:17

An AK-47 seems an, um, interesting choice for a serious assassination attempt Hmm

This is the problem. For us, and the US.

Reading all the (somewhat frenzied) accounts about the background of the man with the gun at the golf course, it sounds like he was a mess, with beliefs (political and otherwise) that had pin-balled around over the last 20 years. But what struck me was that he was constantly trying to insert himself into situations where he "helped" whatever problem he perceived to be happening - almost like a hero complex?
This is from the Washington Post:
...That was a sharp departure from a younger Routh, profiled in the same newspaper in 1991 for his assistance in helping defend a woman against an alleged rapist. Roth, then 25, was wearing a coat and tie in a large photo accompanying the story. He was dubbed a “super citizen” and awarded a Law Enforcement Oscar by the Greensboro chapter of the International Union of Police Association. The headline on the story: “Crimefighting pays.”...

(That's my armchair diagnosis - no fee required)

And now we have Trump front and centre as the heroic victim again.

And this from the Guardian

''Thomas Gibbons-Neff, who interviewed the suspected gunman, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, in March of last year for the New York Times said that when he finished their brief conversation “it was clear he was in way over his head”.
''
''Routh had been outlining an elaborate scheme to transfer people from Afghanistan to fight in Ukraine, which at one point appeared to involve him organising US military transport via Iraq and Poland, as well as an intention to forge documents. Routh appears to have been a construction worker from Greensboro, North Carolina, with no actual frontline military experience.

Really? I know nothing about weapons. Is it unlikely?

An AK-47 is an automatic rifle, kind of like a machine gun - fires off huge rounds, very indiscriminate and not easy to fire with a huge deal of accuracy unless you are a highly trained marksman.

Most credible assassination attempts from a distance (ie not just walking up to someone with a revolver a la the attempt on Reagan) would involve a high powered hunting rifle with a telescopic sight to ensure you hit the target.

Not a gun expert by the way, so may be talking out of my arse!

Zonder · 16/09/2024 09:45

Thank you @CaveMum

prettybird · 16/09/2024 09:50

From my deep analysis based on watching NCIS and reading Wikipedia Wink, it's an assault rifle that is not particularly accurate - although it's good at killing because it shoots so many rounds Sad.

It's certainly no sniper rifle Confused

Spandauer · 16/09/2024 11:42

Trump will grift his way through this yet again. His security detail will be increased, they could insist when he golfs that the rest of the course is empty so Trump will probably charge them for lost revenue and make them take out memberships...

Remember it was only yesterday Trump tweeted he hates Taylor Swift and JD admitted he made up the Ohio Haitian story.

I'm definitely not pro trump.
I like to see media coverage from both sides, after all the polls are very close.

I do think the orange one gets too much attention.

Well, both sides is everywhere. It's not possible really to give him too much attention, he is (at this point) virtually tied for a second term as president. Are you saying late night shows are responsible for that?

Apologies if I'm being dense, but I think maybe I'm not understanding your points?

DuncinToffee · 16/09/2024 18:04

Vance admitted on CNN State of the Union that team Trump fabricated the "eating cats and dog" claim to grab headlines...

Springfield

Two elementary schools were evacuated due to threats.
Both colleges have gone virtual this week due to threats.
The city just canceled their annual CultureFest because of threats.

prettybird · 16/09/2024 18:26

Wonder if it will have any effect on the Ohio electoral college? Iirc, in 2020 for a while it looked as if Ohio might go Blue Shock

If it did, then not all the usual Swing States would be required for Harris to win Grin we can but hope Wink

Of course, since then Trump and his MAGA followers have been able to work on suppressing/denying the Democrat vote Hmm

Truly awful. And cars have had acid thrown over them

The hatchet job Vance and Trump have done on Springfield is appalling. Not just institutions and businesses with Haitian links or employees have been targeted but also city officials and their families, from the mayor downwards, have had death threats, abuse and swatting.

I hope there are no red voters left in Springfield.

Gift link from the Washington Post. The secret service has apparently been warning him about the dangers of his insistence on playing his courses for years.

CormorantStrikesBack · 17/09/2024 07:11

But I guess if he's not a good shot he thinks he's got more chance of hitting Trump by firing off loads of bullets. He probably won't care if he also hits Trump's golf buddy and a few secret service people. The man's son said he's never known his dad own a gun/shoot, so sounds like he won't be a crack shot. In which case an ak-47 is probably ideal.

Plus aren't they the easiest weapon to get hold of - sold in Walmart? particularly for a man with a felony conviction for possessing a gun ?due to a long history of mental health problems

See that he's been charged with further firearms offences not 'apparent attempted assassination'

borntobequiet · 17/09/2024 08:39

Well, if it's some sort of deep state plot to assassinate Trump, the deep state isn't very good at picking its operatives.
