Non-fake, stable genius thanks to @Crucible for the new thread title.

Seniors' special today.*
They’re eating the dogs!
They’re eating the cats!
They’re eating the pets!...
So do you want fries with that cat? (*Apologies to non-MAGA seniors)

In other news, the swing states continue to be too close to call and it looks like it's going to be a nail-biting, buttock-clenching, hand-wringing 50 days to the election. (or thereabouts)
Increase your anxiety with this handy countdown 😭

I wonder if he needs a special keyboard? Must have a tough time hitting caps lock, of which he's very fond, as we know.

The UK does not have first past the post elections for the leader, so they are not fully FPTP

And the Electoral College could be changed but hasn't been and shows no sign of being.

The UK does not have elections for prime minister.
Nor do many other countries
but all elections we DO have are FPTP

Harris and Walz doing lots of tv/media next week. Everything from 60 Minutes (which Trumpy refused to do) through to Stephen Colbert, Howard Stern and popular podcasts etc.

Trump will pretend not to be watching but his tiny fat typing fingers will no doubt give him away.

Bout damn time!

I’ve been listening to the TRIP US 4-part series on how Trump won the 2016 election and it is horrifying to see that Harris’ team have been following a similar route to the Clinton campaign in terms of not enough appearances/rallies/interviews etc. We’re a month out, it’s time to go big or go home!

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 07/10/2024 10:57

In the realm of fact-checking Trump, or Crying in the Wilderness, as it is better known, there's this, from Daniel Dale at CNN:

Screenshot is of a Twitter post which sums up the above. (I have no idea who Art Candee is, but I like their style.)

This has made me think, if "The Mooch" is a backroom adviser for Kamala's debates, is he not in a good position to point this out to the people concerned and advise them to do more to spread the word and make them much more visible to voters by doing more appearances/rallies/interviews etc?

Of all the things in the world I question, one is the 'rehabilitation' of Anthony Scaramucci as a legitimate source/advisor and two is the idea he's a an expert on campaigns and elections. He's a finance guy who spent like a week in a corrupt administration. I believe he advises the Harris campaign on some finance policy, including crypto, which is his area of expertise, but beyond that, I don't get it. He's amusing, but there are a lot of better analysts out there.

I like TRIP but I don't think their US politics arm is very good.

Did it have any mention of hidden currencies ? MN are sh*t hot on that. Shame they can't apply the same rigour to some other posts)

Probably. One of the links was about what a self-promoting sleaze he was (with questionable profits) when he headed Skybridge, so there might have been something in there that triggered it.

The gist was that I really don't particularly understand the legitimising of him. Yes, he's amusing, but he's really not an expert in US campaigns or elections, TRIP US could have done a lot better.

I'm old enough to remember this https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/politics/wp/2017/07/21/evaluating-trumps-sports-history-as-requested-by-his-new-communications-director/

And if anyone's interested in the other link, try googling

seekingalpha.com scaramucci sleazy sales pitch. Should bring it up.

SerendipityJane · 07/10/2024 11:55

My biggest problem with Scaramucci is that in my head I hear "will you do the fandango" which tends to drown out whatever he is droning on about.

Vague reminiscent of "Who Dares Wins" sketch about "hypnotism by wig" from the early 80s.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 07/10/2024 12:06

@adultingforever - thank you, I've found the story on The New Yorker site, not sure if this link works, though:

CaveMum · 07/10/2024 12:30

I find The Mooch entertaining but agree he’s no political heavyweight. That said he does have the “inside” knowledge of how Trump thinks/works and my understanding is he helped in the debate prep by effectively telling them the things to go after that will put Trump off message.

He may have only been in the White House for 11 days (1 Scaramucci) but he was with Trump all through a large part of the campaign and the transition.

CassieMaddox · 07/10/2024 12:36

He seems very well connected and I find his thoughts and insight interesting

Yes, that's how I feel about him, too. I like the way he and Katty Kay interact on the USA TRIP. I must confess, I've never seen/heard the UK TRIP so have nothing to compare them to.

BustingBaoBun · 07/10/2024 14:07

I do wonder though, how he bought into the Trump administration given he was going to be their Press Secretary till it all went tits up
Now he is one of their biggest critics

Give me Jan Psaki any day, I listen to her sometimes

That's what I don't like about him. He's all in until it goes wrong for him and then he's all out, not much moral compass involved in either direction. The article about his business practices is pretty enlightening.

He is funny, though, I'll give him that.

Yes, he is quite likeable
Unlike just about all of Trump's henchmen

My vote is in the post.
It will not change the result.
But it will be counted.

CaveMum · 08/10/2024 09:48

The Mooch freely admits that he took the job with Trump because of his ego - he said in the last part of the "2016 Election" series that his wife asked him not to do it (he says his wife hates Trump almost as much as Melania hates him 😂) but he fell for the whole "working class kid gets to serve the President and change the country" narrative.

He's very much a Republican though, he's simply (now) a Never Trump-er.

DuncinToffee · 08/10/2024 11:10

I don't know where the US posters live but I hope everyone is staying safe with hurricane Milton approaching

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/10/2024 11:49

we had Helene and suddenly we have Milton within what feels like about a week. (I think Helene died down on 29th September, actually, so ten days, but even so...) What happened to Isaac, Joyce, Kirk and Leslie?

The names are chosen in advance.
Each storm is given a name as soon as it goes above a certain size.
Many of them peter out over the ocean so do not make landfall.

Others - like Floyd in 2002 - make it all the way to Boston !

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/10/2024 13:31

Thanks! It's just that I did wonder why M came so quickly after H, and had a look to see what ought to have come in between.

Of course, that means that even if there is a Hurricane Valerie or William, that doesn't mean there have been nineteen or twenty catastrophic hurricanes before them, which might be a relief.
