Non-fake, stable genius thanks to @Crucible for the new thread title.

Seniors' special today.*
They’re eating the dogs!
They’re eating the cats!
They’re eating the pets!...
So do you want fries with that cat? (*Apologies to non-MAGA seniors)

In other news, the swing states continue to be too close to call and it looks like it's going to be a nail-biting, buttock-clenching, hand-wringing 50 days to the election. (or thereabouts)
Increase your anxiety with this handy countdown 😭

Wondering what you are all making of Melania's pronouncements in support of abortion rights in the last few hours?
I'm hearing analysis of it being to soften Trump's image in order to win over some votes.
I'm wondering if it's her going full on rogue! In which case, wow!

I’m inclined to think it’s carefully manufactured to be the soft feminine side to him. She certainly isn’t going rogue, all of the media around her book (and jewellery) has used the same language as his campaign (about seeking the ‘truth’ etc). But then maybe I’m a cynic.

heldinadream · 04/10/2024 11:12

You're probably right. I would just love to see her break free and take to totally trashing him.
I guess she's still attached to the money.
I have hopes that one day she'll find a backbone and leave the darkside. 😂

I've not seen anything yet as to how the so-called pro-lifers are taking it. They seem a bit quiet on the subject.
Or I've just not seen it yet.

Sampler · 04/10/2024 11:57

From what I’ve read, Melania’s latest ‘revelation’ is just carefully timed to attract a few women voters who are unsure about voting for trump due to the abortion stance. She’s complicit in his career, is free to leave and has chosen not to. She is charging $250000 for any interviews about her book. Another grifter with no integrity.

I'm even more of a cynic than you. I imagined it was going to come out that Trump had paid for an abortion for her, or someone else.

She won't be going anywhere, she loves the money too much, and her son is a chip off the old trump block too

Spandauer · 04/10/2024 13:05

Melania is only out for herself (and Barron). She holds equally despicable views as The Orange Blob even though she probably doesn't communicate directly with him anymore, given she seems to be living almost permanently in NYC. She'll leave him when it suddenly seems like a good thing to do. Then she'll play the victim card and say she "hardly knew him".

Yeah, I'm a complete cynic on Melania's abortion stance. She's been absolutely disgusting on everything she's opened her mouth about since the birtherism stuff. It's the same strategy as the new softer, civil face of JD Vance.

There was a great interview on Nicolle Wallace yesterday with a former Yale Law classmate of his - worth listening to. I do find it amusing that they're doing legal work and fundraising for the Haitian community in Springfield.

As for the Jack Smith filing, Sarah Longwell says that the impact on the vote is going to depend largely on what the media does with it between now and then. If they keep it front and centre, it will have an effect, if they let it slide down, it won't. Sadly, I suspect it will be the latter.

HighlandsExpat · 04/10/2024 14:07

The Melania abortion revelation is meaningless. If a woman is swayed by that to vote for Trump, she was going to vote for Trump already. No one who takes abortion seriously is going to be influenced by Melania (weird robot woman) and one sentence in her memoir.

BustingBaoBun · 04/10/2024 14:14

I bet Melania is dreading absolutely dreading that he might win
She hated it first time round, god knows how she'd cope again
And how can she plagiarise Michelle's speech again? She's already done that!

tobee · 04/10/2024 14:43

Just because you're against Trump doesn't mean you are for the good guys.

I always find it hard to believe it's that difficult to live an entirely separate life to your husband if you are that wealthy. So have no concerns for Melania's wellbeing whatsoever.

As an unpolitical aside... The 'We Rate Dogs' guy is worth a follow if you like dogs - he's on instagram and twitter and YouTube I think. Although I frequently shed a tear with his 'Top 5 Dogs of the Week' postings it's an uplifting experience!

Timing is key here.... due out 11 October, the film.. 'The Apprentice'

Billed as 'an American horror show'. Trump's legal team tried to block it. It has been in the pipeline since 2018

CaveMum · 05/10/2024 09:18

The reason that TRIP US think momentum is swinging back to Trump is because they are (rightly, IMHO) concerned that the Harris team seem to be following Hillary’s 2016 strategy of not getting out there enough. Apparently Harris is only going 3 events a week when really she should be out there everyday, criss-crossing the US, making weekly appearances in all the swing states. They also said that a lot of the surrogates you’d expect to see - Pete, Gretchen, Josh, etc - don’t appear to be out there on the talk shows as much as you’d expect at this stage in the campaign.

I just hope they’ve not got complacent after a good Convention.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 05/10/2024 09:55

Thank you for that, @CaveMum - makes sense. Oh, if only the Harris/Walz team would listen to us on the other side of the pond (remember how well that worked out in 2004 when the Grauniad got its readers to write to people in Clark County to vote for Kerry (reminder here, if you're interested: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2004/oct/21/uselections2004.usa4), how much better things would be!

Ian Katz: Were we right to team readers up with Clark County, Ohio

One week ago Clark County was just another county in Ohio. Then came a campaign to pair Guardian readers with its undecided voters and suddenly the world knew its name. G2's editor, Ian Katz, looks back on seven days of email spleen, air-mailed letters...

AcrossthePond55 · 05/10/2024 17:51

MTG....hahahahaha!! She's like watching a barrel of monkeys. But then again, monkeys are cute and fun to watch. Her, not so much.

As far as Melania, you know what's funny? When I heard her 'women should control their bodies' the first thing I thought was that she was defending her 'nude modeling' again. The last thing I thought she was talking about was abortion rights since she never specifically mentioned them. I guess her statement was carefully crafted to NOT be too specific in case it caused a furore with the Cult.

Our absentee ballots are supposed to come today. We live in a rural area so our mailbox is at the bottom of a long drive. We're also in a red county (in a very blue state) so we're keeping a weather eye out for the mail-lady.

IMHO, this election is hanging by a thread at this point and can go either way. I think I may be back to 'take a pill, go to bed' rather than watching the returns all night.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 05/10/2024 17:58

@AcrossthePond55, it's so terrifying that you are saying this: "IMHO, this election is hanging by a thread at this point and can go either way. I think I may be back to 'take a pill, go to bed' rather than watching the returns all night." I mean, you're sensible, I trust your judgement from all I've read from you on here. How is it that so many of your compatriots have been conned by Trump and MAGA? (Also, how is it that anyone in their right (ahem) minds thinks Kamala Harris is a Communist, in a pejorative way? Don't the Evangelicals understand that Jesus was the first Socialist, if not the first Communist?)

Zonder · 05/10/2024 18:21

Very good question @Jaichangecentfoisdenom

AcrossthePond55 · 05/10/2024 19:25

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom

TBH, so many of us are asking the same questions. We can't really understand how the country came to this pass, either. I could posit theories but I'm not a sociologist nor a political expert. I can only think from a 'personal point of view' so here it is:

So much of what is 'wrong' with this county IMHO goes all the way back to Reaganomics and the 'Greed is Good' beliefs of the '80s. Trickle down didn't work and the Wall Street Wolves fucked over a great many people with Ponzi schemes and insider/rotten dealings and the majority of them just walked away with their cash lodged off shore. Many of the people who were fucked over were people who lost it all and saw the rich get richer. Some of them admired the rich (like Trump) for pulling it off. Instead of decrying it, they wished they had the means to do it themselves or had friends who would do it for them. It created that 'I've got mine, fuck you' mindset along with the feeling of "I got ripped off, someone needs to PAY". Add to that the inherent racism in many parts of the country. It had been simmering for nigh on 30 years and along comes Trump in 2015 and promised them all that they were 'victims' and that he'd deliver vengeance and riches. He gave them someone to hate and blame (those 'others') rather than blaming themselves for foolish decisions based on greed or just chance and misfortune. With the backing of fringe media and foreign 'assistance' he was able to spread his message. I'd do the usual comparison to Hitler, but we all already get the similarities.

His followers, from the redneck in a Kentucky 'holler' to an Ivy league graduate in a mansion, are only seeing what they want to see, what they think will benefit them. They don't give a rat's ass about their neighbors or those poor people living in shacks or tents. They think those people need to be 'gone' and they don't care how as long as it doesn't dirty their own lily white hands. And that people who want to help the helpless or less fortunate are commies or socialists. Because "I'm alright Jack, I've got mine".

As far as Evangelicals, I think the most radical of them back him because they think he's the Antichrist and will bring about Armageddon and the 'End Times'. They don't want him because he is 'good' they want him because they think it'll hasten the Rapture. The other Evangelicals, those who turn away from the truths we see of minorities/migrants being demonized, 'othered', and subjected to violence and maltreatment, need to remember the words of Jesus (Matt 25:40); "As you do unto the least of these my brothers, so have you done unto me" and also 2 Cor 5:10; "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may be repaid for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil".

Thus endeth the sermon for today.

TL;dr "Hell if I know, but I've got theories."

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 05/10/2024 19:29

Loving your theories, @AcrossthePond55, thank you for kindly taking the time to respond so comprehensively. So it's much like my blaming Thatcher, I guess.
Dear God, I'd forgotten about the Rapture. I have nothing in the face of such stupidity.

BustingBaoBun · 05/10/2024 19:51

I do appreciate your post @AcrossthePond55 . It's from someone who knows

I sort of followed American politics from Reagan and his failed trickle down and I devoured your post, you explained it all so well

I cannot imagine what worry your country is going they at the moment

Talkinpeace · 05/10/2024 23:21

Slightly outing, but many of you know who I am anyway.

My family were in the US since the 1600s. We are Yankees. Parts of old New York are named after us.

Through different routes I had a monthly dinner date back feed into the Trump family.

I started reading Heather Cox Richardson every day several years ago.

Key points :
US electoral mess (gerrymandering and voter suppression) would be deemed illegal in the EU
Political appointment of judges (SCOTUS) has got Orban in a mess with the EU
Funding of insurgencies (Oliver North) is decried by the US when anybody else does it.

American "Democracy" is on an absolute knife edge
no EU country comes close
(Hungary relies on EU money so jumps)

its really really scary
I cannot see good ways out

Spandauer · 05/10/2024 23:56

Also feeling quite pessimistic here. 😞

On people who enabled the decline of decency and the acceleration of political polarisation then Newt Gingrich and Mitch McConnell are also on my list of players whose expiration date is well overdue.
