Any converts from gas hob to induction?

We are upgrading our kitchen and I’m considering installing an induction hob , easier to clean and looks more modern. Any converts on here please? Opinions or tips on use and recommendations will be much appreciated. How hard was it to switch your cooking methods? I am aware I would need new pans. Thank you

I only had to get rid of one pan (a copper one)

The others - all SS - work perfectly on the induction hob.

I love it. I was wedded firmly to gas hobs for the best part of 30 years!

I say go for it. Sleek, streamlined, modern.

PollyDactyl · 13/09/2024 14:26

Haven't had to switch or change cooking methods.

RampantIvy · 13/09/2024 14:29

Same, except that I wish I had a gas wok burner.

We started with gas then went to 'ordinary' electric then induction.

Induction is very good

Also there are fewer condensation issues and there are issues about 'fumes' with gas cooking, mostly in the US

Absolutely fabulous. Will never have a gas hob again, hate them and the amount of time it takes to clean them.

Sgtmajormummy · 13/09/2024 14:53

I have three sizes of pressure cooker (not sorry), 2 frying pans and a cast iron casserole dish which work on induction so that was enough. I bought an induction espresso pot for DH.

Cooking methods have improved regarding hands-off cooking. The power levels go very high or down to 100w which is as low as a slow cooker. I can set the timer and walk away, knowing it will stop when it’s done. My boil and stop for pasta is another step I don’t need to watch (no kettle in this house) and milk simmering on power 1 never boils over. Great.
The only things I miss are scraping out the roasting tin for gravy over the gas hob and scorching bell peppers over a flame.

Cleaning is a breeze and no need for carbon monoxide sensors or air vents like with gas.

We were going to move from a gas range to an induction one but the electrical load/ spec requirements were eye watering and we would have had to spend thousands to upgrade our wiring..

Probably fine if you are in a modern/new build/ high spec house. Less so if you are in an Edwardian house with somewhat older cables!

So, we have a very smart new SMEG range, but it's a dual fuel one, not the induction one I wanted.

Oldraver · 13/09/2024 15:15

We had a new oven and it was bigger at the back and wouldn't go in due to the gas pipe

So had it removed and an induction so initially it was a reluctant move

But I absolutely love it. We did chip it after a week as the glass work top saver slid and hit it and I nearly cried so over it now

I had to get rid of a couple of copper base pans but now had a copper induction pan (Samuel Groves)

Just be careful of putting non stick frying pans on 'P'

Oldraver · 13/09/2024 15:16

Oh yes and I love the timer feature, just set and walk away and it switches off. I Aldi like that you can put a tea towel under pans (as I'm always letting the boil over)

semideponent · 13/09/2024 15:18

I've just gone from induction to gas. Nightmare.

JoanThursday · 13/09/2024 15:21

I bloody love our induction hob. Easy to clean, looks great after a quick wipe, can simmer veeeery slowly and bring to the boil in literally seconds. We were on hols recently where there was a five burner gas hob. Just reaffirmed that we made the right choice. Wouldn't go back now now.

Malaguena123 · 13/09/2024 15:22

Love my induction hob- super responsive heat and so easy to clean. I wouldn’t have gas again.

TwoeightTwoeightTwoOhhhh · 13/09/2024 15:23

Induction hobs are great but you can’t stand near one if you have anything like a pacemaker or an insulin pump (I think the magnets can cause them to malfunction)

cashmerecardigans · 13/09/2024 15:23

I'm an absolute convert. So quick and easy, far better for low heat too. I wouldn't go back (and I was VERY dubious).
I went for a Miele, which has very straightforward touch controls (numbers so I don't have to press stupid plus or minus buttons) and squares of induction rather than different size circles. Someone told me that the circles can be temperamental if the pan is a lot smaller than the circle. It doesn't matter where you put the pan on my square ones. I realise that sounds a bit strange, but I hope it makes sense Smile

fussychica · 13/09/2024 15:31

Total convert here after 35 years of gas. Cleaning is a dream, I've never ever used anything other than hot water wiped off with an ecloth to clean mine. It also looks very discreet. Mine is a Neff and it came with a set of Schulte ufa pans.

Perroi · 13/09/2024 15:37

I haven't had a gas hob since I moved into this all electric house 30 years ago. I still miss it and I hate induction. The only good thing about it is cleaning.

iceandcheques · 13/09/2024 15:48

I thought I'd never want to cook on anything but gas. Took 5mins to get used to the induction when I moved house. I'm a convert. Easy to clean, safer and just as responsive as gas.

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 13/09/2024 16:01

I was skeptical but would never go back. So efficient, responsive, easy to clean. Doesn’t break up your counter space.
Get a little blowtorch if there are things you scorch on the flame!

The only thing that’s a bit less good is wok cooking. Can still stir-fry fine, but you’re obviously not getting the gas going up the sides of the wok.

Gettingannoyednow · 13/09/2024 16:07

We got induction for safety reasons. (Small dc about). I loved that it doesn't heat up unless there's a pan there, no naked flame etc. Heats up really fast if you go for a high setting, easier to clean.

Only downside is cost, really. Gas kwh is so much cheaper than electric. But I'm very happy with the induction.

SpiderGwen · 13/09/2024 16:09

Can you get combinations?

I use the gas ring to char peppers and aubergines all the time, and to toast chapatis over the flame. I worry I’d really miss that with all induction.

Nannyfannybanny · 13/09/2024 16:15

Hell yes. Changed to halogen 13 years ago when we moved,it was already here, and I had a range cooker in a range fireplace (cottage) wouldn't fit in my down size bungalow. Ten years ago DH refitted the kitchen. Clean it with glass cleaner,so quick, clean, neat. The saucepans I already had were fine,so clean.my last house, although I hardly fried, the tiles and spotlights were cleaned monthly. So lovely not to have to remove all the ring gubbins, saucepans don't burn. Timers, locks!

MarkingBad · 13/09/2024 16:18

Convert here are well.

There is no comparison induction hob wins hands down. Quicker to cook, so much easier to clean and keep clean, no worries that you have knocked a knob and gas is leaking out and switches off when accidentally left on. Wouldnt go back to gas hob now.

siblingrevelryagain · 13/09/2024 16:18

Had my gas turned off and use a rangemaster with 5 ring induction hob.

Wouldn't go back to gas

Tanktanktank · 13/09/2024 16:24

The day my induction hob went in our new kitchen I danced with joy. 15 years of a Britannia supposedly the best range gas cooker that bloody ruined everything I cooked was finally over.

we got a Neff from John Lewis (not the dumb Wickes version with the magnetic button you can lose, and I definitely would lose, you can’t cook without it, dumb or what!)

I’ve got a five ring version with a rectangle on the right that two rings can be joined together for one large pan, suits my oval le cruset.

I had to get rid of pretty much all my pans but there’s a test facility which tells you if the pan is ok or not. My only annoying one was my Maslin jam making pan. I got a simple set from John Lewis of three pans and added a large pot and lid. A couple of frying pans completely sorted my cooking requirements.

I don’t miss the gas, the cleaning of the gas hob, just a quick wipe with a cloth and an induction hob cleaner occasionally.

ours is a top of the range one, I also got an oven, microwave with warming drawer (with bread prooving) below and we got a kit of strips of aluminium so the three items look like a range cooker. All neff. The oven has a self clean which is fabulous.

when I open the kitchen door every morning it makes me very happy. We did the kitchen in 2019 knocking down a few walls.

it heats up really quickly, we got and induction kettle as it’s slightly cheaper than my fast boil plug in, the only down side it being careful you don’t boil pans over and the water drips down the front and into the five glass door of the oven and the bit it gets is the fifth bit of glass and is a big job to remove and clean. But other wise I LOVE it.

Ihateslugs · 13/09/2024 17:01

When I had my new kitchen last December, I was reluctantly persuaded to sway my gas hop to an induction one. Now I would not go back to gas, as others have said, the induction hob is very quick to heat up, just as responsive as the gas one and so easy to clean.

What I do miss after 14 years in this house is my gas oven! The only gas pipe was for the hob, a long way from the oven so became too much cost and hassle to swap the oven.

I just cannot get to grips with the temperature in both my old and my new oven, I love baking cakes and I seem to struggle to get timing and temperature correct, cakes end up burnt or raw! If I adjust the temp for a fan oven, it takes ages to bake a cake, if I don’t adjust it, I end up burning the top and have to cover it with foil, which the fan then blows off!

I can’t add up how much money I’ve wasted trying to bake a perfect cake consistently - never had this problem in over 20 years with a gas oven.
