Any converts from gas hob to induction?

We are upgrading our kitchen and I’m considering installing an induction hob , easier to clean and looks more modern. Any converts on here please? Opinions or tips on use and recommendations will be much appreciated. How hard was it to switch your cooking methods? I am aware I would need new pans. Thank you

I am so happy I made the change. It takes a little time to adjust but that is sooo worth it because of the ease of cleaning. I’d never go back.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 13/09/2024 23:40

We changed to induction it was my husband who wanted it really, he’s a chef. Love it

SaffronsMadAboutMe · 13/09/2024 23:43

Had gas hobs for 30+ years and recently switched to induction.

I love it, it's SO easy to clean and I'd never go back to gas.

I haven't had to change anything about my cooking habits/methods.

Ihateslugs,(do do I incidentally as a gardener) we moved into a council property,it had 2 built-in electric ovens,I had always used gas. It took me some time to get used to the dryer heat. Last night I made a birthday cake for DGD who is 2 today, and I have to tell you my cakes are legend.

Also, to everyone posting about how induction hobs are easier to clean... what was happening to your gas hobs?? Mine just needs a spray and wipe in the evening and it's clean 🤷🏻‍♀️

BigDahliaFan · 14/09/2024 08:25

Ours is a neff one with integrated down vent. Really like it and wouldn't go back to gas. Do sometimes use the gas bbq for things I might have used the hob for....so grilling aubergine etc.

But next time I'd get one that doesn't have the magnetic detachable controller. It gets stuck to the bottom of baking trays.

Pantah630 · 14/09/2024 08:34

Yes although I got an aeg with a wok burner and four induction rings. The induction is fab, boils water really quickly, much more economical and all our pans including cast iron work but not my briki work on it. Gas ring gets used for Greek coffee and stir fry's only now.

Kryten1958 · 14/09/2024 08:35

I could not use an induction hob. I need a wok burner but also an induction hob is useless for making chapatis as a real flame is required.

justasking111 · 14/09/2024 08:49

Is an induction hob cheaper to run I wonder?

An induction hob is a flat surface. When I cleaned my gas hob I had to remove the pan rests and the burners. It was far more of a faff than just wiping a flat surface.

@Kryten1958 I also miss having a flame to char skins of tomatoes and peppers for peeling and being able to use a wok at high temperatures.

Me! We had a new kitchen 3 years ago and I've always had gas before but absolutely love induction. It's super responsive and cleans like a dream. Mine came with a set of pans and I can still use my cast iron ones. Fabulous.

TheOGCCL · 14/09/2024 09:25

I can’t see any reason to have a gas hob anymore unless you want to chargrill peppers or similar on it. Induction is responsive and so easy to clean. They switch themselves off when the pan is removed! I think some people get mixed up with electric/ceramic which are not the same and yes gas is better than those.

What make is the induction with a gas hob please?

Sgtmajormummy · 13/09/2024 22:25

@CrystalSingerFan You can test your oven tray with a magnet. If it sticks the tray is compatible with induction.

Thanks! So at my sister's, if the tray sticks to the magnetised controller thingy, (which comes off for ease of cleaning) I'm OK?

Soundofshuna · 14/09/2024 14:29

My induction with gas burner is Smeg

J712 · 14/09/2024 15:01

I would be interested to know if anyone has an induction hob with a gas hob adjacent to it for Wok cookery. Or can you use the wok on the induction hob if you have the ‘bridge’ heat zone?

As a lifelong lover of a gas hob I was very sad when we moved to a rural property with no gas. Went with induction and absolutely love it now. 19 years down the line and onto our second hob, an AEG. We’ve just bought a house in France and the hob there is gas….when we eventually change the kitchen we’ll go over to induction there as well.

We got a set of lovely stainless steel italian saucepans as a gift with our first induction hob but I had an almost new set of Anolon pans that I didn’t want to stop using, so we bought a converter plate. You put the plate on the hob and then the non induction pan on the plate. It is a bit less efficient and you lose the instant controllability of induction, but it did mean we could keep using our existing pans when we needed them. Over time as things have needed replaced we have just bought pans suitable for induction.

We have a small portable gas ring that takes little gas canisters that we use for anything that we need a real flame for. We get a lot of power outages where we live so we need something like that on hand in any case. Cheap as chips from your local camping store.

raspberryberet7 · 14/09/2024 15:21

Me!!! It takes a lot of getting used to and tbh I prefer gas wish I could go back!

Now this I could get behind!

SanMarzano · 14/09/2024 21:30

I’ve got a Zanussi one (so wasn’t crazy expensive) and would never go back to gas now - we even had the gas capped off. We’re in a Victorian house with not particularly modern wiring and had no issues with the electrical load. It’s so quick I never pre-boil water in the kettle for cooking now because it comes to the boil more quickly on the hob. I have a stainless steel wok I use on the biggest ring with no noticeable difference to when we had gas.

justasking111 · 14/09/2024 22:05

One other plus is the pans don't go black underneath or get dirty, discoloured. I did have to buy all new pans eight years ago. They're still like new.

MBM18 · 14/09/2024 22:14

Moved into a house with an induction hob but changed to gas when we renovated the kitchen 😬 we prefer the way a gas hob cooks food

larkstar · 14/09/2024 22:17

Unusually perhaps, I have an induction hob in my campervan as well as two gas rings - partly because we generally only use sites which have electric hookup but TBH we use the induction hob first and only use the gas ring if we have to cook using a second pan. In a small space like the van there is no naked flame with the induction hob, no moisture as a product of burning gas and no horribly tricky to clean burners - the hob is so easy to clean and the range of control from very low to very high is impressive. If we ever needed to replace the gas hob in the house - I’d choose an induction hob over a gas hob.

NorthernChinchilla · 14/09/2024 22:21

Our new home was induction... were VERY suspicious given we'd had an Aga in our old place.
Now, wouldn't be without it. Bar its annoying squeaking if you put anything near it (one of a range of utterly neurotic appliances) it's quick, simple to clean, and far superior
