Any converts from gas hob to induction?

We are upgrading our kitchen and I’m considering installing an induction hob , easier to clean and looks more modern. Any converts on here please? Opinions or tips on use and recommendations will be much appreciated. How hard was it to switch your cooking methods? I am aware I would need new pans. Thank you

Love mine. Wouldn't go back. As responsive as gas, heats the pan far quicker and super easy to clean. Haven't changed my cooking at all.

Another induction hob lover here. Desperate to change our Britannia range, but can't justify the expense at the moment. I'm so fed up with cleaning the gas hob. I think it's worth paying for a decent induction, as I understand the cheaper ones aren't as good.

Dh wanted induction. I was sceptical.

I was converted within days of getting it.

Another convert to induction. When we did the kitchen in 2019 I was just about convinced to switch from gas but wouldn't go back now. Easy to clean and used as worktop when not in use. Easy to use at low temps and boils water very fast.
Had to change a couple of pans but not a big deal in the scheme of things.

The only thing I regret about my induction hob is that it is a plug in, which is less powerful than a hard wired one. The hard wired one was faulty, so it was exchanged for a plug in. It means that I can't have more than one hob on P.

Great question! I cat-sit for my sister who has an induction hob. Obvs, cleaning is easier... tho not sure how you'd lose the magnetic controller. 🤔

But what about cooking a poussin in the non-induction oven, on a baking tray, and then moving the tray up to finish the gravy cooking? Does it have to be an induction tray? How do visitors/cat-sitters tell?

Anjo2011 · 13/09/2024 18:59

Never even considered induction until it was suggested by kitchen installer. I went with and am very pleased I did. It heats things up quickly and it’s so clean. A wipe over after and good as new. We did get new pans as we had a new kitchen, but I think our old ones would have been fine. I wouldn’t go back to gas.

Thanks everyone, certainly some very useful comments and feedback. Looks like… induction, here I come!

Induction hobs are great but you can’t stand near one if you have anything like a pacemaker or an insulin pump (I think the magnets can cause them to malfunction)

Edited

When we were having a new kitchen I wanted to have an induction hob but was concerned it may mess up my insulin pump. I asked my insulin pump manufacturer and they said the induction hob wouldn't cause the pump to malfunction so we got one. I love our induction hob - way better than the old gas one. I don't know if this is the same for other pumps or other medical devices though!

Sgtmajormummy · 13/09/2024 22:25

@CrystalSingerFan You can test your oven tray with a magnet. If it sticks the tray is compatible with induction.

I might have been tempted had we not lived in a Victorian house in an area that is very prone to power cuts. We were out for 16 hours some years ago and whilst I couldn't use the fan oven, having a gas hob meant that I could do a stovetop meal and boil hot water so that we could have a coffee or fill up the bathroom sink so we could wash!

Same, except that I wish I had a gas wok burner.

That's the only thing I missed. I was a slow convert, we were going to remove it.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/09/2024 22:52

Getting there. Do get irritated by its sensitivity still though, the error symbol seems to flash up at anything, wiping, putting something on it, etc.

ShinyHappyTits · 13/09/2024 22:57

I moved into my DH house when we got together and he had one which he loves. I hate it with the fire of a thousand suns. If it gets wet, it switches itself off, often without me noticing( hello raw dinner) the lock has turned on and won't turn off and I can never accurately gauge how fast something is going to cook. I hate it so much and I miss the gas hob I had so much. And guess who does all the fucking cooking?

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 13/09/2024 23:15

We had a protracted power cut, something which is forecast to be more rather than less likely in the future.

I was glad we had an alternative fuel source.

Xiaoxiong · 13/09/2024 23:17

I have both and while I like the induction one for ease of cleaning and heating up water fast, I don't love it - I find the heat very difficult to control quickly as I have to laboriously press buttons to get the temp up and down (I didn't choose it, it came with the house).

I also find that every time I cook rice it comes out mushy whereas on gas it comes out perfectly- I thought I was going mad but then I googled it and apparently this is a thing, rice doesn't cook as well on induction and a wok is hopeless. I cook a lot of Chinese food so I will never completely love the induction and am always happy to get back to the gas range for that reason.

So - I like induction, I don't love it, and I do miss things that aren't as good when cooked on induction.

Xiaoxiong · 13/09/2024 23:18

I also don't like how I can't put anything on it without it beeping like mad!!

BiscuitlyBoyle · 13/09/2024 23:22

I moved from gas to induction. I love it. What I hated about gas was that I could never get a small enough flame for a low simmer. With the induction I can put a sauce etc on the lowest setting and it’s just right.

HoolsB · 13/09/2024 23:23

No, I’ve just ripped mine out and put a gas hob in.

SleepPrettyDarling · 13/09/2024 23:24

If you’ve kept ancient battered and wonky pans from your very first bedsit, they won’t heat up evenly. Great excuse to buy new ones!

Soundofshuna · 13/09/2024 23:27

I’ve got an induction hob with a gas wok burner. It’s fab and means an alternative if we have power cuts.

I find that the base of pans tens to bow after a while especially if used on high heat settings, then it becomes a problem as you need the pan to be completely flat.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 13/09/2024 23:29

Had gas. Got a new kitchen with induction and LOVED it.

Moved to a new build that had gas. Missed my induction loads, never got over it but couldn't justify paying money I didn't really have on swapping out a brand new hob.

Moved again, had a new kitchen in and the first thing on the list was my beloved induction hob. Still love it now - and DH is converted too

TheBirdintheCave · 13/09/2024 23:30

It depends on what you like to cook. I heavily use a wok and need to be able to control the heat more sensitively than an induction hob can manage.

My brother has one and I've had to use it on occasion. I hate it. Takes FOREVER to heat up and then burns things when it finally gets there.

Oneblindmouse · 13/09/2024 23:35

3 years ago I moved house. My old house had a 7 burner gas range cooker with 3 ovens. My new house had a brand new induction hob with one electric oven. I hated the idea and before moving in I was planning how I could get rid of it and get a gas cooker. However, on using the induction hob I quickly realised that it was brilliant. It cooks everything so much quicker. It's so much easier to clean. I thought it would be more difficult to control but there really is little difference to the gas hob. I did have to buy new pans but my old ones needed replacing anyway.
Yes gas is cheaper than electricity per Kw; but the induction hob cooks so much faster that less fuel is used anyway so there is little difference in cost.
