Any converts from gas hob to induction?

We are upgrading our kitchen and I’m considering installing an induction hob , easier to clean and looks more modern. Any converts on here please? Opinions or tips on use and recommendations will be much appreciated. How hard was it to switch your cooking methods? I am aware I would need new pans. Thank you

Also, to everyone posting about how induction hobs are easier to clean... what was happening to your gas hobs?? Mine just needs a spray and wipe in the evening and it's clean 🤷🏻‍♀️

Do you not remove the big metal pot rests and the rings/burners etc and clean them too?

A spray and a wipe is ok if no pots have boiled over, but even if they didn't I'd still have to clean it all properly after a while.

Induction is literally just spray, wipe and shine.

Yes, I can never go back.

I would be interested to know if anyone has an induction hob with a gas hob adjacent to it for Wok cookery. Or can you use the wok on the induction hob if you have the ‘bridge’ heat zone?

Mine is AEG, one gas wok burner, which switches down to a much smaller ring to use the briki on and four induction rings. It wasn't cheap but has more than paid for itself. We love it.

Our NEFF one is great and I'd never go back to gas. It came with a set of SS pans and my existing Le Creuset works well on it. As previously mentioned not quite so cook for a wok but I think the problem in my case is that the wok is non stick. If I changed to SS I think it would be just fine.

I’m coming round to my induction hob after four years but I still prefer gas. The biggest positive (aside from the environmental aspect) is that the kitchen doesn’t get as hot when you’re cooking. The biggest negative is that if a pan boils over (or there’s even a small splash of water on the hob) the whole hob turns itself off. Even after you e dried it off it can be a right pain to get it back on again!

YouveGotAFastCar · 15/09/2024 07:35

We did it in May, but it was more because we had to than we wanted to - the kitchen designer had not left enough space to safely have gas.

It’s okay. The induction hob is great, but it’s not as good as the gas one and I’ll go back to gas when we get a new kitchen, if it’s still an option. The control you have with gas is incredible.

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 15/09/2024 07:40

We changed from gas to induction and love it. It’s very responsive and you can adjust the power just as precisely as with gas. To test whether your pans will work on an induction hob just try and stick a magnet to the bottom, but even if they don’t you can get good induction-compatible pans at a reasonable price (we bought a set of circulon pans to replace our set from the same make that weren’t compatible)

GinAndGooseberries · 15/09/2024 07:43

Am I thr only one that hates them? I find things like pancake or scrambled egg a nightmare on them and I was brilliant at both on gas.

I get it's easier to clean/safer etc. But we only have it as it came with this house. I dont enjoy cooking as much now.

Turnups · 15/09/2024 07:46

I would get one if I could as DH keeps forgetting to turn off the gas hob when he’s finished cooking!

But we looked into it and we would need to run new cabling into the kitchen to supply enough electricity in case we wanted to run lots of appliances at once. (My house is only 30 years old.) So if you’re redoing your kitchen think about that first.

I do find my daughter's one irritating to use though, as you can’t e.g. turn down a ring in just one action. You have to select which ring you want first and then change the temperature setting, by which time the pan has boiled over. Also if water is spilled on the surface it switches itself off so you have to mop up mid-cook. Maybe that’s just her model, I don’t know.

It depends on what you like to cook. I heavily use a wok and need to be able to control the heat more sensitively than an induction hob can manage.

My brother has one and I've had to use it on occasion. I hate it. Takes FOREVER to heat up and then burns things when it finally gets there.

I think your brother probably just has an electric hob, not an induction. Induction hobs don’t heat up.

It’s much easier to wipe a flat surface than a series of burner wire things that have to be lifted off, and the burner caps that always fall off. And the fiddly bits that food gets stuck in.

Any converts from gas hob to induction?

yes, it’s a no-brainer. Way quicker. WAY easier to clean. You can have the window open without the flame blowing out :) we have a downdraft hob on the island. Most people I know have induction or ceramic hobs now.

Don’t get me starting on stupid fucking gas OVENS!

Aposterhasnoname · 15/09/2024 08:01

We’ve just had one fitted in our new kitchen and I love it. It’s so sleek and clean compared to the old gas cooker. Ours has hood to hob, so the hood switches on and adjusts automatically to what’s happening on the hob. It also has a boil over prevention feature and a timer so I can just stick some eggs on, set the boil over prevention and timer and walk away. It’s great.

The kitchen wiring was a complete mess so we ended up having the lot redone, and a new consumer unit put in, cost us £900 for it all doing including a test certificate.

What do you dislike about gas ovens?
I had one for years because I wanted the different temperature zones.

Parkmybentley · 15/09/2024 08:04

We had induction, got used to it but actually a pain in the bum. Back to gas now, much better.

The annoying bits for me were

  1. Cleaning the induction hob was a bloody nightmare. All these people saying they just wipe with a damp cloth - what planet?!!! If stuff ever spilled it welded to the surface. Because the surface gets so hot! Had to carefully use a specialist abrasive cleaner to get it off!!!!!!! Gas I just wipe the main bit with a damp cloth and don't bother with the black metal parts!!!
  1. Also ruined the bottom of pans because stuff spilled has no where to go, and
  1. The pans don't work on the hob if the bottom isn't perfectly clean!! There's a lump of something breaking perfect contact with the hob.
  1. The worst bit was the faff to control the bloody thing. Touch sensitive controls were fiddly and time consuming. The number of times I wanted to quickly change the setting and couldn't do it fast enough!! The thing would glitch out, it just didn't recognise me tapping it. Or it would shoot past the number I wanted. Woe betide you if your finger is not perfectly dry!! or anything has spilled on the controls!!! Just getting the thing to turn on involved unlocking a safety switch.. multiple taps that didn’t always register.. ARGGH!!!
  1. Pan has to perfectly fit the ring size or it won't turn on! Woe betide you if you put the pan on a bit squiff to one side and don't notice it's turned off again 🤦‍♀️

It was genuinely stressful trying to cook on it by the end. HATED IT.

Back to gas and what a relief. So easy to use, heats up quickly, responds immediately when I turn the dial. Doesn't turn itself off if my pan is a little off centre!!!! BUT I have used crap gas hobs in the past and totally accept not all are created equal 😅

Our new home was induction... were VERY suspicious given we'd had an Aga in our old place.
Now, wouldn't be without it. Bar its annoying squeaking if you put anything near it (one of a range of utterly neurotic appliances) it's quick, simple to clean, and far superior

My parents have an aga and an induction hob 😄 they actually haven’t used the aga for a couple of years now. Converts!

Well to be fair we’ve only had one in the past so it might just have been a dud. But took FOREVER to heat up (eg, food would take double the time to cook) and then very patchy heat. And sometimes didn’t light first time.

MotorwayDiva · 15/09/2024 08:16

Until reading this thread I'd forgotten how much a pain it is to clean gas hob, had induction for 3 years and it gets wiped down in minutes.
My pans were old and didn't work on induction, got new ones and I love cooking on it.
Do miss gas burner for stir frys

teatimeplease · 15/09/2024 09:34

Yep, love it

MistyMountainTop · 15/09/2024 09:53

For charring peppers etc. I just use a blow torch, which tbh is what I did anyway when I had a gas hob! I had the blow torch originally for doing creme brulee

RampantIvy · 15/09/2024 09:56

@Parkmybentley Induction hobs are easier to clean. What on earth were you cooking that made the spills weld to the surface? I use Hob Heaven to clean my hob, and it works a treat.

And why are you always having to deal with spills?

My only negative about induction hobs is that if you regularly cook over high temperatures for a stir fry the pan starts to bow and doesn't lie completely flat on the hob surface. This is why I would have preferred a gas burner for wok cooking and charring vegetables.

SaffronsMadAboutMe · 15/09/2024 15:33

Countless things have boiled over on my induction hob and nothing has ever welded to the surface?

If I'm worried, I just wipe it while it's still hot.

I don’t have any of these issues with mine and I am quite inattentive! Also mine has dials.

Yes, I have to say, since switching to induction, I've had 4 different ones in 4 houses and haven't had any of those issues.

It's also funny that the surface got so hot @Parkmybentley. I can pull a boiling pot off the burner of mine and almost (but not quite) put my hand on it straight away. It sounds like there might have been something wrong with yours.
