Whose clever idea was it to put stickers on greetings cards?! Not the easy pull off ones but the ones that leave some of the sticker behind. I know very first world problems.

Anybody want to put anything into the black hole of hell?

Other people. Let's be honest, most of them are twats

Yep! Satre had it right.

Those really judgemental posters especially when they are responding to someone who may be going through a crisis or difficult time in their life . Empathy is a long underrated skill which sadly a lot of people seem to lack .

It isn't helpful to the OP or others reading who may have similar issues to hear about how perfect your life is because you did / didn't do x & y - that they did .

One example is on the relationship boards when the OP may in hindsight see that something may have been a red flag . What do they expect her to do jump in her Time Machine ? Advice can be given in a kind and non judgemental way rather than attacking the OP .

Agree about stickers on cards / books etc
Always on the front and hard to get off in one go
The new bottle tops on drinks that you can't remove are shit
Most parking apps ( might be my phone , but I'd rather blame the apps)
Plasters that come off at even the hint of any water and just hang there pathetically.
(Plasters back in my day left marks and glued to your body for weeks )
Hard to open jars ( my 'special device 'doesn't always fit round the jar tops )
Loo paper that's either too think or too thin or scented ( why ?) and I don't realize till I get home. Grr
Price of loo paper
Wrinkles that have appeared in my brow almost overnight
Diets that don't work
.. and breath

Totally with you on the new bottle tops! Unless you get the thread right, you can’t get the top back on! Infuriating!

And the plasters that claim to be water proof and never are!

They started appearing in my shopping trolley a couple of months ago and I also found them infuriating, but now I know why they've come about, I'm getting over my irritation. Apparently, "tethering" the caps is part of an EU directive announced in 2018 that aims to reduce single-use plastic waste. They're one of the most littered single-use plastic products on beaches, which end up in the sea causing injury to sea-life.

But we're not in the EU, why are we subject to this directive?

DappledThings · 16/09/2024 08:59

Freysimo · 16/09/2024 08:39

But we're not in the EU, why are we subject to this directive?

As someone already explained upthread it would make no financial sense for a factory to have two different machines making two different types of bottles for export to the EU or remaining in the UK. Ditto for a factory in the EU exporting to the UK.

I don't get what the big deal with them is. You just need to lift it slightly and the cap goes back on and if you really hate it that much you can still twist them off.

gmor6787 · 16/09/2024 09:11

People who think they are entitled to disregard notices.
eg Family in children’s fenced in play area with large notice NO DOGS ALLOWED. Pushing their dog round on a carousel 😤

Couriers who don’t knock and leave your parcel in the pouring rain.

Email to say your parcel has been delivered and you have to go on safari to find it.

Children who constantly scream when playing outside. Had to give up painting fence the other day because I had murder on my mind.

We're not subject to the EU Directive, but manufacturers are and having changed their production to the tethered cap design to meet the directive for EU-member states, they're not going to incur additional costs to manufacture a different cap design just for the UK.

I’m currently in the Middle East (not UAE) and they’re happily using water bottles that unscrew totally and plastic straws - which I thought were long gone.

Arghgerroffyabastard · 17/09/2024 07:27

The tethered bottle tops… you realise that they click back out of the way, right?

like another poster said, bottle tops are one of the most frequently littered plastic items. Surely we can put up with 0.1 of a second of clicking it back in order to make a measurable difference to our environment…

Not when your hands/grip strength is affected by arthritis and they've also reduced the diameter and depth in the process so you can't open the sodding things anymore and existing assistance tools don't work with the new ones, you can't.

BustingBaoBun · 17/09/2024 07:46

Whether I like the attached bottle tops or not, it is a good thing that they are doing this. We'll get used to it. Just like we did with no free plastic bags in supermarkets and elsewhere. What an outcry there was! Now it's just normal. We have to move forward with controlling single use plastics.

Plastic straws are awful. They should be banned everywhere.

I know those food cans with the pull open tops are a good thing. I do know it. I just wish they were a teeny bit easier for those of us with no fingernails. I stand there clawing feebly at the dog food while the dog hops around on my feet looking hopeful and then, when I've sustained injuries under every non-existent nail, I have to go and get a spoon and try again with the handle.

I use one of these.. Cheap and functional, £1.99 from Amazon

The new 'eco-friendly' wrapping paper that has three stickers to keep it closed, not a cellophane wrap. Ends up being LESS eco-friendly asthe stickers are impossible to get off and they rip the wrapping paper, so you have to throw away the first bit 🙄🙄🙄

outdamnedspots · 17/09/2024 08:07

Xiaoxiong · 13/09/2024 12:39

Feta cheese packets that don't peel open, even though it has a corner that says "open here". It's fine with something like parmesan that's dry so you can cut into the packet cleanly, but feta is wet and when you have to slice into the packet with a knife and you get salty feta water all over the place!

I know this is the most middle class of middle class problems but it still infuriates me.

Just open the feta(or mozzarella) over the sink...

Why Rachel Reeves? What has she done that deserves hell? Completely get Netanyahu, don’t know enough about Biden to comment.

Would offer up Trump, Cameron, Farage, Rees-Mogg, Johnson and Truss.

Most big drinks companies have a few large different bottling plants around the world which have their own recipes (banned ingredients, sugar content etc.). They won't have replaced bottle top machinery in every location. But, the plant that does the UK's bottling is clearly the same as does it for the EU, which makes sense as we have almost all the same relevant food safety laws. That's why you might have the old style tops and we have the newer ones.

Yep, that's my problem. I've genuinely had tears in my eyes from the pain of trying to open them.

Landscape shaped pegs

Do you know with regular pegs - you use your pincher grip to open it and peg whatever it is. If you use regular pegs for sealing food packets, you just need to fold over a foil or plastic bag and peg it.

Not with landscape shaped pegs. You have to fold the sides of the bag in sideways and then keep folding it because nothing really fits into a landscape shaped peg.

Definitely this!!!

100% this. My two local motorways are both like this now. Some idiot pulled out of a refuge in front of me (very hard braking required). People don’t know how to use them, the tech doesn’t work, and they weren’t even needed! I bet the calculations of time saved didn’t include the time wasted in traffic during construction.

I don't get "sniffy" at people like you, I just think to myself that they're ignorant and annoying and then get on with whatever I'm doing! Oh yeah, and always make sure to thank people who are polite, well mannered and considerate of others, especially as it seems to be rarer and rarer. It's interesting to get an insight into their mindset though, so thanks for that!

On this subject I always aim to thank people but occasionally I might be a bit distracted and not even notice someone’s done it. Bad form on my part but I do resent those people who feel the need to make an issue of it by talking to me like I’m five years old. My mouth might be saying “so sorry, I was miles away” but my brain is saying “why don’t you just fuck
off?”.

Yes, those bloody bottles! When I eventually open them but don't finish them and put them back in my bag they leak everywhere! I now have a mouldy diary!!!

NiceCutRoundDomeDormice · 20/09/2024 10:15

I’m sure it’s probably been mentioned, but fucking fridges that beep at you to remind you you’ve left the door open. Of course I’ve left the fucking door open - I’m trying to put a week’s worth of shopping away!! How am I supposed to do it, slide a butternut squash under the gap in the door?!
