Today i’m wearing a dress I bought from Topshop in 1999 and it got me wondering - what’s the oldest piece of clothing you wear? I don’t mean something vintage you once bought, or something inherited from an older relative, or even an accessory like a scarf. I mean a dress, skirt, top, pair of trousers etc. I’m intrigued to know, particularly in the fast fashion world we live in.

I have a pair of denim shorts that I bought over 20 years ago. They were way too big when I bought them, less so now.

Class War t-shirt from about 1988. With picture and slogan. Wore it to work a couple of years ago when I was feeling a bit grumpy. Obviously wore it under a jumper so as not to worry colleagues.

I have a lot of gorgeous clothes from the late 90s/early 00s that don't fit anymore, that are being stored for my daughters.
I do have a pink and purple patterned knitted mohair jumper that I've had for about 25 years (was bought as vintage then). I couldn't get into it for a while, but it fits again now.

A couple of Jigsaw ponchos that are 25 years old, and that come out and used constantly every spring/summer.

I've just inherited a traditional Icelandic jumper from a relative that she'd had for about 30 years. It will probably still be around in another 30!

I have a cream silk scarf that was my grandmother's in the 1940s.

20 year old denim jacket. It’s faded to the perfect colour and softness. I love it

Tooty78 · 14/09/2024 19:50

I have a sleeveless midi shift dress from Wallis bought in 1995, and I still wear it.
It is all muted purples/yellows/green and dark blues sounds ghastly but in real life it's lovely!

It only works though when it is really hot, as the colours suit a heatwave so consequently I only get to wear it in England a maximum of two days😄.
That's probably why it's lasted so long!

I have a great t shirt that I had in 1994. I still wear it, buts it's stretched.massively and has holes.so I wear it as a nightdress.

I have a band t-shirt from The Cure's The Head on the Door tour from November 1985. I did wear it at a gig a few years ago but now wear it mostly at the gym. Does that count?

mathanxiety · 14/09/2024 20:02

Two oversized jumpers from 1983, one pink and Aran style though not in wool, and one navy, a silk and linen blend.

Dearg · 14/09/2024 20:04

I have a lovely mohair sweater, knitted by my late mum circa 1985. I don’t wear it often, but I treasure it always.

Andnowshesatoddler · 14/09/2024 20:09

CharlieDickens · 14/09/2024 20:16

I still have a dress a boyfriend bought for me when I was 18. That was 30 years ago in 1995. It's classic cut and still stylish. I'll probably have it another 30 years.

EdithStourton · 14/09/2024 20:21

That I actually wear, a pure wool skirt, 1985.
I'm a bit chunky atm and I probably won't be able to fit into this winter...

Unrulyrabbit · 14/09/2024 20:24

Pair of blue cotton shorts I bought from toyshop when I was about 15/16, so mid 1990s. Look the same as when I bought them really.

LaRosbif · 14/09/2024 20:25

I have a half slip from Bhs that my mum gave me in 1980 - I'm 63 now and we're both still going strong.

verybookish · 14/09/2024 20:29

I have a dress that used to be my grandmother‘s undergarment. She embroidered her initials on it before getting married in 1933. So it‘s at least 91 years old. Still lovely thick cotton.

Wouldprefertobereading · 14/09/2024 20:35

I have a Benetton jumper I wear that I bought when I was 16.. 1979. I have several wearable articles of clothing that are older than some of my colleagues..

farfromideal · 14/09/2024 21:07

I have a couple of skirts from 1999 which I wear every summer

MargaretThursday · 14/09/2024 21:14

I have in my wardrobe a black velvet dress my dm got to go to uni as a best dress, so in early 1960s.
The zip is broken and I'll never fit in it again I doubt, but I can't quite bring myself to throw it away.

Of things I wear, I have a few Laura Ashley dresses from the 90s; the floral jersey cotton ones which are really comfortable.

fluffiphlox · 14/09/2024 21:19

The dress I got married in, in 1985. Not a wedding dress as such and I can’t fit into it.

Soonenough · 14/09/2024 21:20

I have a BettyJackson floral bolero type jacket from 1988. Worn with an all in one leotard , peplum ruffles with pink shoes and massive rhinestones. Very full on 80s.

Papyrophile · 14/09/2024 21:21

Last week, I wore a brown silk suit that I bought in the early 1990s for a meeting with a very fancy client, to speak at my DM's funeral. With a T-shirt she handed down. The suit still fits, and it's fashionable again.

thecatneuterer · 14/09/2024 21:23

A crop top from 1997 I think. Really nice fabric and looks great with high waisted stuff. I wore it a few times this Summer.

magicstar1 · 14/09/2024 21:25

A black leather biker jacket I bought when I was 15 in 1990. I have another one from 1991 too.

Feckedupbundle · 14/09/2024 21:30

I have a pink shirt that was part of my staff uniform when I worked at Richards in 1985. I still wear it every summer and it looks as good as it did 39 years ago
It certainly shows me how well High st clothes used to be made, compared to today.

RandomUsernameHere · 14/09/2024 21:32

Probably a Topshop vest bought in c.2000.
