Today i’m wearing a dress I bought from Topshop in 1999 and it got me wondering - what’s the oldest piece of clothing you wear? I don’t mean something vintage you once bought, or something inherited from an older relative, or even an accessory like a scarf. I mean a dress, skirt, top, pair of trousers etc. I’m intrigued to know, particularly in the fast fashion world we live in.

I’ve got an Armor Lux Breton fisherman’s top I bought in Honfleur harbour market in 1993. The man at the stall proudly said it would last twenty years. He was clearly underselling its quality!

My oldest thing is a quicksilver black wool jumper which I bought in 2004. It’s so cosy

Damnloginpopup · 13/09/2024 08:00

1994 Siouxsie and the Banshees tour t shirt of mine.
1940's RAF battledress jacket that was someone else's.

I have a cream white stuff ski fleece that I bought in Meribel in the mid 90s. Still looking good.

I have a Pixies tshirt from 1990 that I still wear. It’s held up surprisingly well!

I have a black stretch velvet dress by Katherine Hamnet from 1980s and a Ghost dress from 1990s

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 13/09/2024 08:23

I e still got loads of items from the early to mid (and late) 90s. It was when I first started earning decent money and buying better quality clothes. My daughters have pretty much commandeered it all now and often wear my Shanghai Tang, Ghost, Jesire, Paul and Joe, Paul Smith, Maharishi’s, Sevens and lots more. I’m really glad a lot of the clothes I loved are having a second life, and they look fabulous in them.

Due to size change, not much, but I do have a jumper I knitted at school in 1984 from a pattern in "Jackie", due to being 1980s oversized it still fits. Electric blue with a pattern knitted in!

CrotchetyQuaver · 13/09/2024 08:48

I've got a simple black sleeveless dress from Dorothy Perkins, not entirely sure how old but late 1990's. It's made from polyester jersey fabric that doesn't really crease. Been round the world with me when I had to travel on business.

Currently on holiday in Spain and I wore it last night. The cost per wear on it must be amazing even if I was too fat to wear it for 10 years

Fifthtimelucky · 13/09/2024 10:05

Hanging on my washing line at the moment is an embroidered top. I can't remember exactly when I bought it but it is definitely older than my eldest daughter who is 27. I wear it regularly in the summer.

The oldest thing I have in my wardrobe, is a blue velvet dress and jacket that my mother had made for her some time in the 1950s. I wore them a few times in the 1980s but sadly they no longer fit me.

AnchorWHAT · 13/09/2024 11:02

I have a grey Wallis mac with kick pleats in two parts of the back, it cost almost a hundred pounds and i coveted it for ages knowing i couldn't afford it, my lovely mum bought it for me for xmas as a surprise. mum relined it years ago and it’s been hanging in my wardrobe now for 37 years! I still wear it but not often as it's a bit big and heavy.

I’m a big Breton fan - LOVE this!

I have a top that I got for my 16th birthday in 1991. I probably only wear it a couple of times a year.

But you still wear it - that counts! Amazing

I have a dress I occasionally wear that I bought circa1990/91 ish.
It's an M&S St Michael with proper facings.

This is a brilliant dress. A classic.

I have a Jean jacket and a sarong I bought at uni that are 25 ish years old, still get worn in the right season.
I do own my universal blur t shirt I was bought for my 15th birthday but it's far too small now. They have reissued the design and it's 30 pounds on the website and I've been trying to talk myself into buying one in my size but think it's are indulgence.

MumonabikeE5 · 13/09/2024 11:24

I routinely wear clothes that my mother wore- a skirt from Jaeger 1974 for example- I have a red leather jacket I wear several days a week in autumn, that I purchased in 1997.
I have a few items of clothes purchased in 2022-24 but most of my wardrobe are clothes I purchased in 1997-2007, when I had money to spend.
much of it has been worn to rags.
id love to have a big shop

LottieMary · 13/09/2024 11:28

A Jane Norman sparkly black dress that I bought in 2002. Has changed fit over the years but because it’s got a very flared skirt it’s very forgiving 😂

Moier · 13/09/2024 11:33

A black leather mini skirt l bought in 1980.( l loved alternative clothing.. black leather/ lace/ fishnets/ long gloves / stiletto boots).
It's a size 10.. ( I'm 66 and on mounjaro) so I'll ever get into it again .🤣
My eldest daughter wore it a few times when she was a teenager ( she's now 40).
It's still in very good condition.

WillimNot · 13/09/2024 11:34

It was pinched out my wardrobe but a cricket jumper, from the 70s, given to me by my mates dad in 1998, when I was at sixth form in year 12, and now worn by my DD who is now also in sixth form, who is also in year 12!

I also have some T-shirts from Miss Selfridge/Top Shop from around 1996- pinched by DD. Along with some original Wrangler flares from the 70s.

Basically anything old I own is now being worn by DD who happily tells their mates that they got it from me. Their mates think it's brilliant.

Jewellery wise I still have my gold dummy pendant and a dummy necklace from around 1993 from the Take That era.

Blarn · 13/09/2024 11:36

I have a lovely skirt I bought from Mango in 2003. Its an off white and black patterned cotton A line and lined with cotton too. I love it, its been taken in, let out, a new zip added. I last wore it about five years ago an it is too small now unfortunately.

I also gave a wool coat from Warehouse that I bought in 2007 or 2007. I looked at the label the other day and saw its 75% wool. I saw a similar style in M&S which was a polyester viscose blend and it looked cheap like it wouldn't last two winters, never mind 7.

newrubylane · 13/09/2024 11:44

A dress I wore to a university ball in 2005. But it doesn't exactly get much wear! I do have a wrap-style top I bought from Primark in the summer of 2008 that I still love and wear.

OldTinHat · 13/09/2024 11:49

I've got a pair of socks from 1999 if that counts?

Blarn · 13/09/2024 11:53

Actually I've just remembered I have a pair of M&S St Michael jeans that my mum gave to me. She thinks she bought them in about 1990ish. I wear a 14, they are an 18 which makes me think that vanity sizing is a thing.

Ariela · 13/09/2024 12:02

I've loads of stuff that's over 25-30 years old. Possibly the oldest is my handknitted school jumper (cherry red) my mother made it about 1974. Still fits and is lovely and warm but I don't wear it often. I'm actually amazed it has no holes yet though the elbows are thin and were darned with extra wool to add strength once while at school, I also have the (same colour) hockey socks, I use them with my walking boots.
I've 4 striped rugby tops that are 38 years old.
