If you own your house, do you service your boiler annually?

Reading all the “shall I put the heating on?” posts, I’m surprised by how many people apparently have their boiler serviced regularly (appreciate this is mandatory if it’s a rented place, so I’m talking about homeowners who are meant to sort this stuff ourselves). How many of you are on the ball about this, please?

Of course!! A plan isn’t expensive to maintain it. Cheaper than a new boiler!

anxietyaardvark · 12/09/2024 20:25

Yes. Why wouldn't you?

NothingAGoodCuppaDoesntFix · 12/09/2024 20:26

Yes . The house next door to my friends in another city had their boiler explode.
Whole house went with it. I'll try to find the link to their local paper it was a while ago now though

Yes

Lovelysummerdays · 12/09/2024 20:28

I do, I also pay for home emergency insurance and that includes a 24 hr plumber if boiler goes wrong. It’s only valid if you have proof that your boiler has been serviced within the last 12 months though.

RedWinePoliticsAndHair · 12/09/2024 20:28

Yes. But mainly because I have British Gas Homecare (due to the arseache of not having it in the past) and they provide it. BGHC well worth having btw, I'm not an advert, just a person who's previously had a cold house because of shit boilers.

JanefromLondon1 · 12/09/2024 20:29

It's part of our British Gas home care plan. They'll ring us when it's due and arrange a convenient time.

upat4am · 12/09/2024 20:29

We never have. Reading these replies is making me realise we really need to!

GoldenLegend · 12/09/2024 20:29

Yes. Sod's Law will dictate that if you don't, it'll break down at 7pm on Christmas Eve.

BiscuitlyBoyle · 12/09/2024 20:30

Yep. Every year during October half term.

We've had a new tank and loads of bits done under our plan, it's been a godsend over the years for the annual cost.

NothingAGoodCuppaDoesntFix · 12/09/2024 20:32

We use a local guy for ours.

billybear · 12/09/2024 20:32

yes yearly same plumber used for years usually have a small job at same time last year had a new heated towel rail, and he checked my outside tap.worth it they are expensive to buy again

RandomUsernameHere · 12/09/2024 20:32

Never had a boiler serviced other than when we rented out our old house and before we sold in one case.

Yes. The one in my last house sprung a leak Christmas Eve one year. In desperation I rang a plumber I’d used before who answered the phone as he’d popped into the office to pick something up, (this was a long time ago).
He could hear I was desperate and nipped over on his way home to patch it up.

I'm surprised that you're surprised. I always get the boiler serviced annually. I once knew someone who died from CO poisoning. I also get the car serviced every year. It's basic maintenance.

I hope those of you who don't have a regular boiler service have a CO alarm.

I do. Wouldn't dream of paying British Gas.

AlwaysGinPlease · 12/09/2024 20:37

Every year. With British Gas Homecare. We don't have an excess fee and it's saved us a fortune, one part was £900, we paid nothing. They cover everything, boiler, electrics, plumbing, drains. We can call them out at any time.

Arafon · 12/09/2024 20:38

We have BG as I can't be bothered to have to run round and hope the independent gas man is free if a radiator leaks, much easier to just book it in with BG, I would rather pay a bit more for convenience

Bignanna · 12/09/2024 20:40

Ancientdecs · 12/09/2024 18:55

Absolutely not

Why? Insurance conditions are that a boiler has to be serviced annually. If it’s not and there’s a disaster they probably won’t pay out!

Sparklywhiteteeth · 12/09/2024 20:41

Op why do you ask, are you not servicing your boiler?

Don’t be too sure! Insurance won’t pay out if boiler isn’t serviced annually.
