If you own your house, do you service your boiler annually?

Reading all the “shall I put the heating on?” posts, I’m surprised by how many people apparently have their boiler serviced regularly (appreciate this is mandatory if it’s a rented place, so I’m talking about homeowners who are meant to sort this stuff ourselves). How many of you are on the ball about this, please?

Yes, otherwise our warranty is void.

HAF1119 · 12/09/2024 20:07

Done yearly, has to be to keep covered for repairs etc and they just contact me and do it

Frowningprovidence · 12/09/2024 20:09

Yes or the warranty is void.

NewGreenDuck · 12/09/2024 20:10

The chap who does the annual service always checks the gas meter too. I thought they all did.

I rent, my boiler is serviced every year and they always look in the meter box and do something (not sure what).

smileylottie87 · 12/09/2024 20:11

We do!

Crumblelog · 12/09/2024 20:12

We didn't as our boiler was so, so bad. Had it done a few times years ago. It finally died earlier this year so we will do now.

DiscoBeat · 12/09/2024 20:12

Yes, we are home owners and get lots of things serviced: boiler, air source heat pump, gates, alarm system and our sewage treatment system (not mains drainage). I would hate for them to go wrong!

Notreat · 12/09/2024 20:13

Yes every year, we have a service contract.
it's basic safety

Yes we do. But we have breakdown cover and it’s included in that.

bakewellbride · 12/09/2024 20:14

Yes we have ours serviced every March.

doodleschnoodle · 12/09/2024 20:15

Yep! The company who installed it come to service it every year.

Tequilamockinbird · 12/09/2024 20:16

Yes, we have boiler cover and a yearly service is included

addictedtotheflats · 12/09/2024 20:17

Yes. Had a underground leak we weren't aware of and had to have our driveway dug up. Luckily its an ugly driveway anyway which needs replacing

doodleschnoodle · 12/09/2024 20:17

And please make sure you have a carbon monoxide monitor near your boiler. Our brand new boiler had a fault and we only knew because the carbon monoxide detector in the room went off. They came out next day and sorted it and all fine since, but thank god we had the detector.

Sparklywhiteteeth · 12/09/2024 20:19

Yes of course, we took out a contract with British Gas.

Yes, my landlord is an HA rather than an individual landlord, so I don’t know if that makes a difference or not.

It’s interesting reading the reasons people are having them done though. Apart from home insurance, my number one reason would be for carbon monoxide leaks. A boiler breaking in the middle of winter would be very inconvenient etc, but a fear of a leak is by far the most important reason for me.

Arafon · 12/09/2024 20:19

You are supposed to get a gas safety check but a service isn't really needed

RawBloomers · 12/09/2024 20:21

Yes, though once, when moving from a rented home to our own place I totally forgot it was something that needed doing for about 3 years until something drew my attention to it.

TarnishedMoonstone · 12/09/2024 20:22

Wow, thanks all, this is an eye opener. I’d better have a word with DH …

Yes we do. It's actually on the small print of our house insurance - something to watch out for if you're not.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 12/09/2024 20:24

Yep every year

alwaysmovingforwards · 12/09/2024 20:25

Yeah, annual service here.
I see it like the cars, it’s an expensive bit of machinery I’d like an expert to keep in good health, to ensure it does the job it was designed to do.
