If you own your house, do you service your boiler annually?

Reading all the “shall I put the heating on?” posts, I’m surprised by how many people apparently have their boiler serviced regularly (appreciate this is mandatory if it’s a rented place, so I’m talking about homeowners who are meant to sort this stuff ourselves). How many of you are on the ball about this, please?

Yep. It's too risky not to.

WimbyAce · 12/09/2024 19:45

We do as I have home cover and it includes boiler service.

Superhansrantowindsor · 12/09/2024 19:48

It is very important. One of the few things about being an adult I’ve actually got to grips with.

Uricon2 · 12/09/2024 19:49

Yes, every year. It was a pretty new system when we moved in and it makes sense

Yes. I had a new boiler installed when I bought my house and have a service plan with the installation company. The radiators and pipework are old and they are covered as well. They contact me in August each year to book my annual service for October. My heating came on automatically yesterday and today at 7am and I am happy it is all working properly.
When I moved into this house the boiler was working but it was over 25 years old. No way was I going to carry on using it.

My boiler is 27 years. It was in the new build when I bought it.

I will keep it for as long as I can.

NoShirtNoShoesNoSheldon · 12/09/2024 19:52

No because BIL is a heating engineer and says it isn’t necessary and can cause more problems than just leaving it alone.

TorroFerney · 12/09/2024 19:52

Yes, we have annual cover. Ours broke when I'd just given birth in a very snowy January in 2010. We have had cover since then which includes the service.

Yes. Even when we were on income support and had literally next to no money we prioritised doing it as it can literally save your life. How can anyone live with themselves if their boiler suddenly explodes or leaks poisonous fumes and you could have prevented it? I also feel so 😳 to think i could potentially live next door to someone who doesn’t give a shit and doesn’t do theirs and is putting my family at risk too! Makes me really angry.

When I lived at home with my Mum in my 20s she would never get it done regularly and one day I was home alone and it actually caught fire. Huge orange flames coming from the cupboard. It scared the life out of me and I’m just lucky it was the middle of the day and I realised straight away.

MouseofCommons · 12/09/2024 19:56

Of course. Every late summer. I'd rather it was looked after than broke in February.

Rocksaltrita · 12/09/2024 19:56

Of course, don’t mess with gas!

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 12/09/2024 19:56

Yes, we get it as part of our boiler breakdown cover. The cover isn't cheap (according to DH) but we've had loads of parts replaced either during services or when we've had problems so it's probably been good value (and definitely good for peace of mind).

Autumn1990 · 12/09/2024 19:56

When I had a gas boiler yes it was serviced every year. Solid fuel now it chimneys to sweep

BabyDoge · 12/09/2024 19:57

Yes, our home emergency policy isn't valid if we don't have it serviced every year.

ttcat37 · 12/09/2024 19:57

At my old house as a singleton I probably had it done twice in 15 years. Never actually had any problems, I was lucky as the boiler was ancient as well. Now live with DH and we have an oil boiler, and get it done religiously every year.

Lifeasweknowitisrandom · 12/09/2024 19:58

Yes. I had a boiler leak in the past and it destroyed my carpet and everywhere needed a repaint (not covered in the insurance and I also had to pay for the new boiler as it wasn't fixable) so I'm a bit paranoid. Cost about £3k.

APurpleSquirrel · 12/09/2024 19:58

Yes

TheMerryWidow1 · 12/09/2024 19:59

Yes and thank god we do as one year they found a gas leak at meter which didn’t know about

ItWasntMyFault · 12/09/2024 19:59

Yes. It's 38 years old and still working fine so it's clearly worth it.

BlueEyedLeucy · 12/09/2024 19:59

Yes, every year. Currently, to keep the warranty valid and beyond that point, just to keep it in good condition. Better to take care of things and ensure they last and run well!

MaryGreenhill · 12/09/2024 20:00

Yes of course

Lalalacrosse · 12/09/2024 20:00

Yes. Otherwise the warranty is void.

The boiler, the car and the chimney are all checked annually.

ForKeenLimeOtter · 12/09/2024 20:00

Most home insurance would be invalidated if you didn't get it serviced annually.

I do (although the last two houses have had new boilers and we only lived in one for a year so didn’t but would’ve if we’d stayed)
