Who is the most famous person alive today?

virgocatlover · 11/09/2024 18:22

As in, well known world wide by face or name.

I would say the Queen was up there when she was alive but not sure Charles would make the top 10 now.

Trump, Putin or Elon Musk perhaps?

Obviously there are many famous Hollywood actors and singers but are any the most famous worldwide where English isn't the first language?

I've just realised I have absolutely no idea what Taylor Swift looks like.

DodoTired · 11/09/2024 20:33

Ronaldo or Arnold Swarzenegger

Anonymouseposter · 11/09/2024 20:33

Probably Trump-far from the most admired but probably the most recognised.

I think Paul McCartney is still very well known.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 11/09/2024 20:34

ZiriForGood · 11/09/2024 20:27

Xi Jinping overall

Droupadi Murmu in women's category

Not worldwide. Worldwide it's Trump.

Actually, I'm trying to think of someone who transcends language - Mr Bean?! I wonder if Rowan Atkinson gets recognised everywhere he goes?

He’s massively popular in china, apparently.

frenchnoodle · 11/09/2024 20:38

DogInATent · 11/09/2024 20:25

I don't think you realise how long ago that was and how many people that might have recognised him have died, and how many more have since been born that could no more recognise him than identify a Kardashian.

He had a chart topping single last year, it's not just old people keeping him in the charts. Number 1 in the UK and us and made the top 10 across the world🤷

There's an 8 hour documentary on Disney plus about the Beatles, he's more popular now than he's been in the last 3 decades.

MintsPi · 11/09/2024 20:40

Another one going with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Have you seen the Rowan Atkinson interview (I think it's with Graham Norton) where he talks about being unable to convince a bloke he's standing next to in a queue that he's the real Mr Bean and not just someone who's the spitting image of him (he was even told he should sign-up with a look-a-like agency).

meltedchocolateandstrawberries · 11/09/2024 20:44

Definitely Ronaldo. The amount of shows I've watched like race across the world, the grand tour etc that go around the world, they end up in these tiny towns in the middle of nowhere and the kids know Ronaldo.

Mydahliasareshit · 11/09/2024 20:44

Given the popularity of Top Gear across the planet, it is interesting no-one has mentioned Clarkson yet.

I've heard of all the people being named on here - but there are a good few that I wouldn't know what they looked like .

I think some people on here would be surprised by how popular sports stars are in other countries, and yes, pretty sure that young people in Asian countries would be more aware of Ronaldo than Trump . In western countries I would perhaps think Trump most recognisable, but worldwide and amongst younger people perhaps not so much .

I wonder also in some countries whether culturally sports will always be OK but someone like Taylor Swift definitely not.

Barack Obama has been mentioned.

dayswithaY · 11/09/2024 20:50

I would have said Michael Jackson or Elvis at one time. Now, probably someone in the news constantly - Trump or Putin.

Ronaldo possibly, but lots of people wouldn’t know him.

My teen and early twenties children couldn’t identify a Beatle dead or alive.

Barack Obama has been mentioned.

Pretty sure Jesus has too.

MrsSunshine2b · 11/09/2024 20:51

Taylor Swift by a country mile.

Also going with Paul McCartney - I think people forget just how huge The Beatles were. The news coverage when he goes will be off the scale (hope that's no time soon!)

The Beatles split up over 50 years ago, and he's had no significant solo success in nearly 40 years himself. A good portion on the fans from the 60's will be dead themselves, and to the younger generation he'll be no more significant than any other random 80'odd year old.

It's like assuming I'd be totally familiar with classic silent movie stars of the 1920's when I was growing up in the 1970's and 80's.

Laurel and Hardy had a number 1 hit in the 70's..... The blue ridge mountains of Virginia.

A big revival in England at the time, lots of children watched the shorts on TV.

I'm not sure if she is well known worldwide among the under 30s. Britney Spears was also very famous but not sure if she is on that same scale worldwide today.

Of course she is.

Madonna isn't going anywhere.

stayathomer · 11/09/2024 20:55

I asked my dons about Madonna recently, they didn’t know who she was! I’d say Taylor swift, Elon musk or trump or David Attenborough perhaps. Maybe Greta thunberg?
