Who is the most famous person alive today?

virgocatlover · 11/09/2024 18:22

As in, well known world wide by face or name.

I would say the Queen was up there when she was alive but not sure Charles would make the top 10 now.

Trump, Putin or Elon Musk perhaps?

Obviously there are many famous Hollywood actors and singers but are any the most famous worldwide where English isn't the first language?

"Garron Noone"
😁what's the Mandarin for "Follow me, I'm delicious"?
I could totally get behind a campaign to make Garron more famous than Trump.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 11/09/2024 20:56

McCartney influenced a lot of artists the younger generation listen to so they'll be aware of him.

Laurel and Hardy had a number 1 hit in the 70's..... The blue ridge mountains of Virginia.

A big revival in England at the time, lots of children watched the shorts on TV.

Indeed they did, however their original heyday was after the silent movie era, so not as removed as the Beatles are from today, and also, you are talking about a revival which was current and contemporaneous in the 1970's and 80's, McCartney has had no such similar thing in the 2020's.

To be totally frank, two out of three of those, if you showed me their photo, then I wouldn't be able to put a name to them.

Yes, I have heard their names and understand that they are footballists, but if you asked me to pick them out of a line up I wouldn't have the first idea at all. Apart from David Beckham.

Not worldwide. Worldwide it's Trump.

They have 1.4 billion country each to start with and I suppose everyone in their country knows about them.

Asia has 4 billion people, or BRICS countries have 3.6 billion together. If their schooling and media report about their neighbours or allies, it creates pretty high baseline.

Just to be clear, I do agree that Trump is a contender here, unlike Paul McCartney and Princess of Wales.
Still, if we were betting, I 'd go with Xi. I guess it would be pretty close between him and Trump, but Xi would have much more favourable odds in local betting agencies.

Tigertigertigertiger · 11/09/2024 20:58

Trump

William and Catherine

(Harry and Meghan are more infamous than famous)

Meghan and Harry are more popular around the world. Section of British population cannot believe they left and are doing well without them. And the world understands why Meghan would be easily demonised.

British media pushes Catherine and William.

I just googled messi, genuinely I wouldn’t have been able to pick him out of a line up.

It has to be Ronaldo. It used to be Beckham. Someone actually researched it quite a few years ago and the result was Beckham. There was a calculated formula to it - in short you had to play for a big premier league club, play in a big European club and have a personal profile in the US. That made you the person with the most significant reach across the globe.

Tom Cruise is a good shout. His films will be shown all over the world in many languages.

Don't think he's that famous to people under 30.

frenchnoodle · 11/09/2024 21:04

I do think Trump tops it.

David Attenborough, probably from the sheer amount of countries he's visited and his documentaries are in. Is up there somewhere too.

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/09/2024 21:05

I love this thread! Absolutely pmsl at some of the suggestions - Eminem, David Attenborough, Hugh Jackman, Barack Obama!

I would be so deeply interested to see the replies on a similar thread for people miles away from the US and Europe. There would be so many household names we've never heard of who people in, India, for example, might think are recognised across the world.

The world might not want to admit to it. But the Kim Kardashian and the Kardashians are known and influential in pop culture all over the world. Even in countries it's thought they can't possibly care about social media.

Soccer legends(Ronaldo, Cristiano, Beckham and Rooney).

Barack Obama and Donald Trump.

How would someone in a mud hut in Ethiopia be watching international football matches then? 😂

Obama was Potus. It is the most famous. Not who does every single person know.
