Who is the most famous person alive today?

As in, well known world wide by face or name.

I would say the Queen was up there when she was alive but not sure Charles would make the top 10 now.

Trump, Putin or Elon Musk perhaps?

Obviously there are many famous Hollywood actors and singers but are any the most famous worldwide where English isn't the first language?

Donald Trump I would say. It was the Queen before she died I think.

Princess of Wales, whole world seems to be obsessed with her.

Applesonthelawn · 11/09/2024 19:13

I'd say a footballer too, just for the worldwide cross-generational appeal. Messi or Ronaldo.

Morebloodyexpense · 11/09/2024 19:14

One of the things I found amazing living in various countries was the popularity of ‘keeping up appearances’ , the show with Hyacinth Bucket. Apparently it was the bbc’s most exported programme ever. Now I’m sure she’s not the most famous but it’s quite amazing how famous that show is around the world 😂

SweetcornFritter · 11/09/2024 19:14

The internet says Ronaldo.

BarbaraHoward · 11/09/2024 19:15

Trump has gotta be up there, as does Taylor Swift.

Kate Middleton is probably the most recognisable royal but nothing on the old queen.

There's probably a Bollywood star or something that isn't known here but is known to huge numbers elsewhere.

Actually, I'm trying to think of someone who transcends language - Mr Bean?! I wonder if Rowan Atkinson gets recognised everywhere he goes?

My ex-ILs in Algeria loved Mr Bean and knew the episodes off by heart 😁

Wherefore · 11/09/2024 19:18

I'm hopeful that it's the Dalai Lama. Rather than Trump.

worcesterpear · 11/09/2024 19:20

I don't know the answer but I can't believe all the people saying Taylor Swift. Until a year or so ago, I'd only vaguely heard of her and I certainly wouldn't recognise her in a line up. I would say a political figure like Trump or Xi. Footballers, maybe most would have heard of them, but they are not generally recognisable figures to all ages, sexes and nationalities.

Gymmum82 · 11/09/2024 19:20

I don’t think it’s Elon Musk. I barely know who he is and I wouldn’t recognise him if I tripped over him

ThatsNotMyTeen · 11/09/2024 19:21

I’d definitely agree Trump or Putin

in the same way Hitler was the defining figure of a last part of the last century

commonground · 11/09/2024 18:37

it depends on the age group I guess. My 83 year old mother wouldn't be able to identify Taylor Swift and might not even have heard of her.

Trump, on the other hand....

I’m quite a bit younger than your mother, but I wouldn’t recognise

Taylor Swift if I bumped into her in the street, either.
But yes, Trump would be a different matter - but then his ugly orange mug is in any case once seen, never forgotten….

Warmhandscoldheart · 11/09/2024 19:23

I think Sir Alex Ferguson, the former Manchester United manager, would be the most recognisable famous person in the world.

AnnaMagnani · 11/09/2024 19:23

Will definitely be a footballer.

In the 90s I did voluntary work in a very tiny African mission hospital stuck up a mountain. It took ages to get there, most people would have never left the village. There was no TV and a small shop that appeared to sell nothing.

Got asked where I was from, when I said the UK - Ah! Manchester United!

And people reeled off the whole team, which was more than I knew.

Elton John

Cantgetbehindtheradiator · 11/09/2024 19:25

Ronaldo I reckon, or Messi.

Couldn't personally pick either out of a line up but Ronaldo has the most followers on social media and whenever you watch something like Blue Peter when they travel or a foreign correspondent reporting from pretty much anywhere there's often a kid in a football shirt in the background somewhere at some point.

We hear a lot about American politics but family in several asian countries reckon it's not so known over there. But football seems to be universal.

David Attenborough has to be up there surely

Putmeinsummer · 11/09/2024 18:44

He wouldn't walk, he'd do some stepovers and nutmeg you at the last second.

You do know I had to go onto Urban Dictionary and look up "nutmeg" Grin
And I still wouldn'r recognise him if he did that to me !

Aaron95 · 11/09/2024 19:29

Probably Shah Rush Khan or Yang Mi.

Most people on this thread have a very westernised viewpoint and seem to have forgotten that there are more people in Asia than the rest of the world.

GoldenNuggets08 · 11/09/2024 19:29

I definitely wouldn't say Taylor Swift. My parents in their 60s and 70s wouldn't have a clue who she is! I think Trump... unfortunately! Even young kids know who he is.
