Who is the most famous person alive today?

As in, well known world wide by face or name.

I would say the Queen was up there when she was alive but not sure Charles would make the top 10 now.

Trump, Putin or Elon Musk perhaps?

Obviously there are many famous Hollywood actors and singers but are any the most famous worldwide where English isn't the first language?

Probably a toss up between Trump, Elon Musk, Taylor Swift, Putin. Maybe Bill Gates once upon a time but not now.

Seriously, how can anyone get all aggressive on a thread like this, that’s a whole new low.

SlowRider · 11/09/2024 18:47

I'd say Shah Ruk Khan, considering the population of India, parts of Africa, south east Asia and Middle East (his recognition in those regions)

NoraLuka · 11/09/2024 18:47

Is Trump really more famous than Obama?

I don’t know about Taylor Swift, she’s famous here but if you take all the older people including the ones in India or China, maybe they won’t have heard of her.

I follow Liverpool football club on FB and people from literally all over the world comment on the posts and we don’t really have any world famous players at the moment (sorry Mo Salah!) so based on that the most famous person could be a footballer.

tobee · 11/09/2024 18:48

Interestingly no one's said Prince and Princess of Wales. Which immediately makes me think 30 years ago it would have (definitely?) been Diana.

Alapotin · 11/09/2024 18:48

Putin, Trump, King Charles

He came to my mind too.

Me too. Must be up there as a person who has been very famous for a very long time. How big are the Beatles in the southern hemisphere though?

Letsgodancing · 11/09/2024 18:48

I would say in places with bigger populations, so probably people high profile in China and bollywood stars in India but we have probably not heard of them, the K pop stars seem huge worldwide, the black pink girls and BTS were the biggest boyband in the world at one point.
If we go with western world Europe /USA /Aus, probably Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana are 2 of the most famous women of recent modern times.
Taylor Swift in terms of music right now.
Trump / Obama and now Harris politically.

tobee · 11/09/2024 18:49

I think in their day @SharonEllis

tobee · 11/09/2024 18:50

Diana was one of the most photographed I think @Letsgodancing

SpanielPaws · 11/09/2024 18:52

William and Catherine

(Harry and Meghan are more infamous than famous)

NotPennysBoat · 11/09/2024 18:52

Ronaldo 100%. On race across the world, the contestants were in a tiny village in Malaysia or somewhere like that, they lived in a wooden shack and spoke no English. All the local kids were doing the Ronaldo "sooooo" action!

I would say today, Trump is more famous. When Obama was president then it was the other way round.

I'm not sure about footballers - football is very popular worldwide ofc but very much a 'male' thing in non-western countries and probably a much smaller following among women in comparison. Plus big countries like America are less into that sort of football and prioritise other sports (American football)

Taylor Swift.

RosesAndHellebores · 11/09/2024 18:52

Xi Jinping (China)
Donald Trump
King Charles III
The Pope

Kneidlach · 11/09/2024 18:53

If you’re talking worldwide recognition the most famous person could well be someone who is known by nearly everyone across China and India but who the average mumsnetter has never heard of!

NotPennysBoat · 11/09/2024 18:53

I wouldn't recognise the Pope if he wasn't in his 'costume' and I'm (lapsed!) Catholic!

Greyyyybeornot · 11/09/2024 18:54

Taylor Swift

@MoralOrLegal Eh? My answer might not be right but they're definitely still famous in China and India... and well, lots of other places that aren't just UK or US, according to Google 🤷🏼‍♀️

HappyChicky23 · 11/09/2024 18:56

Miley cyrus (Everybody knows that Hannah Montana chick ) , Taylor swift, Beyonce

BoundaryGirl3939 · 11/09/2024 18:59
