Who is the most famous person alive today?

virgocatlover · 11/09/2024 18:22

As in, well known world wide by face or name.

I would say the Queen was up there when she was alive but not sure Charles would make the top 10 now.

Trump, Putin or Elon Musk perhaps?

Obviously there are many famous Hollywood actors and singers but are any the most famous worldwide where English isn't the first language?

I thought Madonna was known everywhere but then I mentioned her to my DH who is Nigerian and he had never heard of her until he came to the UK.

Will definitely be a footballer.

In the 90s I did voluntary work in a very tiny African mission hospital stuck up a mountain. It took ages to get there, most people would have never left the village. There was no TV and a small shop that appeared to sell nothing.

Got asked where I was from, when I said the UK - Ah! Manchester United!

And people reeled off the whole team, which was more than I knew.

This.

I have travelled extensively and no matter where I have been, the minute I have said I'm from England (and come from near Manchester) the response is generally "Ah David Beckham / Wayne Rooney😃"

This has been everyone from young children in a Chinese kindergarten class to elderly shopkeepers on a tiny Greek Island to street kids in Vietnam to farmers in the Australian outback!

Likewise the same probably applies to Ronaldo and Messi.

Footballers have been mentioned a lot here but a great many people do not follow football, especially women. I have heard the names mentioned here but no clue what they look like.
I often hear about Taylor Swift now but would not immediately recognise her.
Older people mentioned here like Paul McCartney would not be recognised by most young people or in Asia or Africa, even if the name The Beatles is known.
I cannot imagine anyone is known worldwide by everyone, though Trump is probably the most widely known as he has such a strange look.

I’d say probably the Prince and Princess of Wales.

I don't think that they are very famous around the world.

I think that the royal families are seen as very old fashioned

Really? I couldn’t name a K pop star. I would recognise B2S (?) potentially if they were standing together in one of their outfits.

But who you know isn't relevant in a worldwide fame context.

Who anyone in the UK knows isn't relevant - the UK is a minor insignificance in this (and many other) contexts.

You're right, of course. A hereditary head of state based on who had the biggest todger in 894AD is such a forward looking and 21st century form of government.

TealTraybake · 12/09/2024 12:34

Tom Cruise, Ronaldo, possibly Jennifer Aniston on the basis that Friends is beamed to tvs all around the world all the time.

But the UK would know more “world famous” people than a lot of other countries due to our obsession with pop culture. Korean pop groups aren’t high up on most people’s list.

surely everyone on this thread is commenting people that they know of. Seen as no one can speak for anyone else, or the entire world 😂

DeanElderberry · 12/09/2024 12:44

Royalty has been old fashioned for centuries, but for people who like that sort of thing the 'old' aspect is one of the things they like. With the empire gone and the commonwealth going the visibility and recognition factor of the UK royal family on the world stage will be like that of the Spanish or Dutch.

That's why one of my early comments was that it's very likely to be someone you don't know.

Pop culture isn't universal. The UKs obsession with z-list celebrity doesn't in any way reflect fame.

GoldenNuggets08 · 12/09/2024 13:08

It's 100% not Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift

Is she really? I couldn't name even one of her songs and i am sure there are many millions like me.

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 12/09/2024 13:10

"Cliff Richards or Richard Branston maybe?"

🤣 so famous you got both their names wrong.

Loving the poster who went to Nepal to find out if they'd heard of Paul McCartney 🤪
