Who is the most famous person alive today?

As in, well known world wide by face or name.

I would say the Queen was up there when she was alive but not sure Charles would make the top 10 now.

Trump, Putin or Elon Musk perhaps?

Obviously there are many famous Hollywood actors and singers but are any the most famous worldwide where English isn't the first language?

@Abbylikeswine yep, in the UK but not culturally “British” if that makes sense. He definitely won’t know who John Lennon is. I only know who he is because he’s the one who was shot (I think?) but couldn’t tell you what he looked like!

Abbylikeswine · 12/09/2024 09:16

If kamala becomes president, she will definitely become world famous as the first US female president

stanleypops66 · 12/09/2024 09:18

I agree with others who say Trump or Ronaldo, but I think Trump would trump it just because he's so distinct looking. Out of context, people, like the pope (without the robe etc) would be unrecognisable to most.

HappydaysArehere · 12/09/2024 09:20

David Attenborough

I’m over 30 - didn’t know.

I had heard of John Lennon and knew he was a beatle, but wouldn’t know what he looked like.

I saw someone say they learnt about the Beatles at school, that must be regional as I didn’t and I went to school in London.

Me too! I can’t imagine learning about the Beatles in school. My dad would have thrown a fit if I had 😁DH does always (begrudgingly) talk about being forced to learn about Elvis Presley in history when he was in Year 10 though. That was wild to me (especially as his music was all stolen…)

I don't think I learned about any bands at school.
School never taught fun things.

I learned about music that happened before my time from TV documentaries.

There were always TV documentaries on about the Beatles, Queen, Elton John, Elvis Presley, live aid

There was always stuff on the TV about them

I would have definitely skipped past those.

Elvis? 😂😂 that is very random.

My school would have told us the Virgin Mary is the most famous person in the world.

I will have to ask my DH if he learnt about any celebs but he went to an Irish speaking school so I doubt it. It’s wild to me that people learn about celebs at school.

If you or DH went to school in Ireland, there is an option to study music at junior cert and leaving cert.

They definitely cover; famous music bands in the twentieth century, in that subject.

Edited

The Beatles are actually on the curriculum for JC too. I teach in a large school and music students only make up for approx 7% of the students so I stand by my comment that most of my 12-18 year olds wouldn't know PMcC!

Theeyeballsinthesky · 12/09/2024 09:33

id say Cristiano Ronaldo. Combination of being a footballer which has a global reach in terms of spread unequalled by any other sport plus playing for Manchester United one of the most followed and well known football teams in the world and also he works really hard at being famous and maintaining that fame.

I agree with Trump. Well, I don't agree with him but you know what I mean! He still managed to be talked about and create headlines while he WASN'T the president, despite having been ousted after one term. God, I really can't stand him. In the words of Father Jack 'How did that gobshite get on television?'

Uricon2 · 12/09/2024 09:50

I can believe it's Ronaldo (and would much prefer it to be him than Trump)

It is generational I think, Pele and Muhammad Ali would have been strong contenders at one time.

2dogsandabudgie · 12/09/2024 09:59

I'm not sure the older generation would recognise Ronaldo.

I would say they would recognise David Beckham more.

bazoom · 12/09/2024 10:02

Don't forget the big man. Must be up there - Tyson Fury

DeanElderberry · 12/09/2024 10:09

I'd assume Pope Francis - one and a quarter(ish) billion baptised Catholics worldwide, and a fairly high recognition among non-Catholics in 'the West'.
