Who is the most famous person alive today?

virgocatlover · 11/09/2024 18:22

As in, well known world wide by face or name.

I would say the Queen was up there when she was alive but not sure Charles would make the top 10 now.

Trump, Putin or Elon Musk perhaps?

Obviously there are many famous Hollywood actors and singers but are any the most famous worldwide where English isn't the first language?

Agree about Ronaldo and Suiii, I’ve seen kids in non westernised and poorer places doing the suiiii on social media before I even knew it was linked to Ronaldo.

Jackie Chan has to be pretty up there too? although people without access to a TV wouldn’t know him.

Maybe the poster is a huge Paul McCartney fan. I can’t think of any other reason they’d argue it. Unless it’s his wife or child. 😂

I don't actually think he's the most identifiable person on the planet. But it's a fun thread to keep going isn't it. 🤷

ErrolTheDragon · 12/09/2024 08:39

@GoldenNuggets08 - quite so, no reason youngsters globally should know about a British pop group from the 60s! Probably the Beatles wouldn't be a history topic outside the north west of England.Grin

Thanks and genuinely I’ve never heard that.

KateMiskin · 12/09/2024 08:40

As for the remote places argument, I have travelled a lot in many remote places, and lots of people in Turkey, the Middle East and even Russia have known who Raj Kapoor or Amitabh Bacchan were, but I would not argue that means entire countries do.

I mentioned him up thread, He has released albums in china.

Would kids recognise him now days, it's been a out 20 years since his cartoon?

The insurance on his big American movies won't let him do his own big stunts like he used to. I'm wondering if he's still well known.

greglet · 12/09/2024 08:42

I also think there's a distinction between most famous in terms of pure numbers of people who'd recognise them worldwide (in which case it's likely to be someone famous in China or India, even if I have never heard of them), or in terms of breadth of recognition (I.e. many but not all people in many countries would recognise them) - I think Trump, Putin etc are high on the list here, along with many footballers and Taylor Swift et al.

FinallyMovingHouse · 12/09/2024 08:43

Jesus. Has been famous for a while!

HoobleDooble · 12/09/2024 08:45

I'd say Trump or Putin. I think David Beckham had a moment at one point, especially in his Man Utd days.

Galoop · 12/09/2024 08:45

Pope. Dalai Lama. Amitabh Bachan. Madonna.

Abbylikeswine · 12/09/2024 08:57

Paul McCartney?! I don’t think I could point him out in a lineup. My teen DCs wouldn’t even know who The Beatles are and my young adults DNs might know the band but not the individual members.

I’m going with Trump.

Update: Just asked DH if he knows who Paul McCartney is. He does not.

Are you in the UK?
I can't imagine anyone over 30 in the UK not knowing who Paul McCartney is.

Does your husband know who John Lennon is? He was also in the Beatles.

There's an airport in the UK named after John Lennon!

TheBers2024 · 12/09/2024 08:58

Pope. Dalai Lama. Amitabh Bachan. Madonna.

I wouldn't say any of those. I be surprised if most people could identify either the Pope or the Dalai Lama from just his face or Amitbh Bachan ( never heard of them myself) . Madonna is definitely not known to younger people and why should she be.

Abbylikeswine · 12/09/2024 08:59

Cristiano Ronaldo is definitely known in a lot of places.

Did you see the video where Ronaldo asks his own children who the most famous person they know is,

And they say "mama".

:)

I’m over 30 - didn’t know.

I had heard of John Lennon and knew he was a beatle, but wouldn’t know what he looked like.

I saw someone say they learnt about the Beatles at school, that must be regional as I didn’t and I went to school in London.

Thanks for answering.

That's mad to me.

Like we have a UK airport named after a beatle

Pope

Must admit I wouldn't recognise the current Pope if I met him.

Abbylikeswine · 12/09/2024 09:07

I would recognise the pope as I've seen a good few videos of him on news sites

Starlight1979 · 12/09/2024 09:07

In the world I would say either Ronaldo, David Beckham, Taylor Swift or Donald Trump.

Although whenever we have been on holiday / travelling, the one person that gets mentioned as soon as we say we're from the UK is Wayne Rooney?! So maybe him 😂

frenchnoodle · 12/09/2024 09:08

That actually bring up a good tangent, are there any other bands / musicians taught about in school...

Because when I were a lass, Freddie mercury was the photo they'd use in books about AIDs, with a very brief life story.

I also did a very short section of a history lesson about Sammy Davis Junior being escorted through the kitchen to the stage when he was performing with Frank Sinatra because of segregation in America at the time.

I can't think of any others...

Nope, as already posted i wouldn't recognise Ronaldo from a photo, I certainly wouldn't have a clue what his outline looks like.

Amitabh Bachan is India's most famous movie star. Although I do agree with you, it depends on age so probably it would have to be a world leader like Trump. And probably the Queen before she died. I don't think Charles would cut it, oddly Harry might. Definitely Meghan.

I don’t remember learning about any bands or musicians at school. However I went to a religious school, I don’t think they follow the standard curriculum.

George Best was before my time, and not from my region, but I still know who he is!
