Who is the most famous person alive today?

virgocatlover · 11/09/2024 18:22

As in, well known world wide by face or name.

I would say the Queen was up there when she was alive but not sure Charles would make the top 10 now.

Trump, Putin or Elon Musk perhaps?

Obviously there are many famous Hollywood actors and singers but are any the most famous worldwide where English isn't the first language?

@Wineandcupcakes
Err yes of course they have heard of Ronaldo. Have you not seen the documentaries. They are in the middle of nowhere kicking a ball and know exactly who Ronaldo is. Trump? Not so much

Where are you from?

The UK 😂

I'm still shook by the Dalai llama child sex abuse scandal.

I thought he was one of the good guys

I was just reading about that and yeah me too. Very discomforting.

also his comments, that if a woman is the Dalai llama after him she needs to be attractive as otherwise people won’t want to look at her face.

its all very bad, obviously the paedo thing is the worst.

He was in the Beatles.

Surely you know who the Beatles were?

Yes. But I couldn’t name the individual members. Or one of their songs off the top of my head although I’ve of course heard some of them.

We are trying to name the most famous alive person in the entire world! I just highly doubt the most famous person in the entire world right now known my multiple generations and multiple nationalities is Paul McCartney. There's no denying he's done a lot in his time but there's definitely people known more widely and more recognisable than him. Very few of my 12-18 students would recognise him, and only some would know what he's famous for.

Well it's Trump, and / or other world leaders /religous leaders isn't it, but that would make a very short thread.

If few of your 12-18 year old students know him, maybe that is poor education then?

I used to teach teenagers in Spain and they all knew who the beatles were

ErrolTheDragon · 12/09/2024 08:27

I suppose you have to try to think who's well known in India and China as well as/instead of 'the west', and also bear in mind that populations are generally younger outside the west.

Well of course you do. Maybe you could get the answer if you could figure out who the most famous (not popular) foreigner in each region and then see if anyone crops up everywhere.

Wineandcupcakes · 12/09/2024 08:28

It’s not Paul McCartney. Surprised anyone would think that. And it’s not Ronaldo , they maybe arguably the most famous in their category.

it is likely to be the Dalai llama. Closely followed by trump or putin, but I guess that’s a little boring.

KateMiskin · 12/09/2024 08:30

Abbylikeswine · 12/09/2024 08:20

Have you been to India?

I went to India.

When I was in India, they did know who Paul McCartney and the Beatles were.

They put on a Beatles tribute band night in the bar in India near me

Edited

I am Indian so yes several times! It's one of the youngest countries in the world.

Obviously some people know him but not the majority. There are also Eagles, Dylan and John Denver tribute acts but to claim that the majority across a vast country know him is overkill.

I wonder if the people who think it's not paul maccartnet have actually travelled to any remote places in the world?

I travelled to rural India. They knew who Paul McCartney was.
I travelled to rural Nepal- they knew who Paul McCartney was.

I went to Indonesia- they knew who the beatles were.
In Sri Lanka yes they did aswell.

The Beatles are known around the world

Maybe the poster is a huge Paul McCartney fan. I can’t think of any other reason they’d argue it. Unless it’s his wife or child. 😂

HairyToity · 12/09/2024 08:32

Trump, Putin or Obama.

It's not going to be a pop star or sports star, as they could be a no-one in parts of the world.

Abbylikeswine · 12/09/2024 08:32

Trump and now kamala will be well known

greglet · 12/09/2024 08:33

I'd have thought maybe a Bollywood star, especially if they'd crossed over into western markets (e.g. Priyanka Chopra, who I think is very famous in India and is married to a Jonas brother).

Your argument is redundant.

As much more than one person have said Paul McCartney on here. Go back and read

And I've also said trump is well known around the world

What ever are you posting, that you did a world trip to all these place and in each one asked if they knew who Paul McCartney was? How else would you know?

I’ve travelled extensively for work. I have never once asked anyone if they knew who Paul McCartney was, so wouldn’t know how many people knew.

yojre posting you basically surveyed all the locals 😂

Abbylikeswine · 12/09/2024 08:34

Biden was pretty well known too.

Everyone is interested in the US, so everyone is interested in the US president

If few of your 12-18 year old students know hum, maybe that is poor education then?

My 25 yo learned about the Beatles (specifically John Lennon iirc) in primary school history.

I know, because the people there talked to me about what music they like of course.

People talk about music everywhere.

That's how I found out that Westlife were extremely popular in Indonesia.

I hadn't realised that westlife were that famous until I went to Indonesia. And a lot of the locals there told me that they loved westlife

Wineandcupcakes · 12/09/2024 08:35

Ronaldo will be recognised for Sssiiiiiiiuuuu

for his what? That’s not even a word.

I'm not in the UK!

ErrolTheDragon · 12/09/2024 08:37

You seriously think people would recognise the Dalai Lama's body or head outline without seeing him?!

That's a strange criterion.Confused

I'm going to have to google this Sssiiiiiiiuuuu thing as I've no idea what it means😂

StolenChanel · 12/09/2024 08:37

Paul McCartney?! I don’t think I could point him out in a lineup. My teen DCs wouldn’t even know who The Beatles are and my young adults DNs might know the band but not the individual members.

I’m going with Trump.

Update: Just asked DH if he knows who Paul McCartney is. He does not.
