Who is the most famous person alive today?

virgocatlover · 11/09/2024 18:22

As in, well known world wide by face or name.

I would say the Queen was up there when she was alive but not sure Charles would make the top 10 now.

Trump, Putin or Elon Musk perhaps?

Obviously there are many famous Hollywood actors and singers but are any the most famous worldwide where English isn't the first language?

There's a difference between recognising a name and identifying that person if they walked past you in the street.

The Pope and The Dali Lama will have been heard of by more people than any footballer.

Yes but rhe question is who is the most famous and not who is the most popular. I think there will be very, very few indians who have not heard of shahrukh khan.

(I'm not a fan either.)

Also, bollywood is quite big in other countries as well not least because there are so many indians abroad (35mio). And in some countries bollywood movies are very popular even among non indians. Middle east, Turkey, Egypt, singapore, Russia (used to not sure about now), Japan and apparently even Nigeria.

I know op asked for famous but the poster I was replying to said Shahrukh Khan has 3 bn fans, hence I commented on popularity.

I still don't think he is the most famous person in the world.

World population is 8 billion, so 1.4 b indians ( not removing babies) plus 35 million indians abroad, 235 mn Pakistanis and 10 extra million for people who recognise in other countries ( total < 1.8 bn) does make him the most famous person. I think Trump, Tom Cruise, Ronaldo are more famous. Even King Charles is recognised by more people.

Thebaguette · 12/09/2024 01:42

It is Dalai Lama, not ( Salvador) Dali Lama or Dalia Llama.

I must admit, I'd never heard of him. But I'm convinced 99% of the replies on this thread are too white-UK-centric (which is a common failing on MN), so I did some searching around for figures likely to be well known in either India or China and the relevant diaspora. He leapt out. Although Ronaldo is looking like the best sporting option so far through a combination of direct appearances as a player plus advertising and sponsorship deals.

I think Ronaldo is more famous.

I think you’re a massive football fan, which is skewering your view somewhat?

OneBadKitty · 12/09/2024 07:32

"The Pope" as a figure head will obviously have been heard of by lots of people, but the actual pope is not famous- there will be a majority that couldn't tell you his actual name, age, background etc. He's not that famous in his own right.

Anonymouseposter · 12/09/2024 07:38

At a given time I would have said Nelson Mandela or Barack Obama but unfortunately the current most recognised person is Orange. A few years ago David Beckham would have been a contender but now Ronaldo. Paul McCartney is very famous too.

GoldenNuggets08 · 12/09/2024 07:41

I'm baffled at the amount suggesting ut might be Paul McCartney!

Showed a picture of him to my.kids and they couldn't identify him as he is today though obviously they know who he is. Most of India and China won't.

Why?

He's known by multiple generations across the world, had top 5 hits in the 60's right up to last year, written songs for generation spanning people from the rolling stones to Kanya West and one of the world's riches men....
He's influenced thousands, had multiple movies written around his songs, including one staring Ed Sheeran.

His late wife's name is all over the best selling vegan food brand and his daughter is a big name in fashion.

That's without mentioning the impact he, and George Harrison had on the hare krishna movement in the UK and US.

Judging by the press - Dave Grohl

I'm really not sure Ronaldo is the most famous. I've heard of him, know he is a footballer, but there ends my knowledge of him. I think he might play for either Brazil or Portugal, and I definitely wouldn't recognise him if shown a photo. I've just seen a post mentioning Ronaldo Nazario and Cristiano Ronaldo-I assume one of these is Ronaldo but i have no idea which. I have several friends who either hate or don't follow football who would know either the same, or in some cases much less than me about him (some won't even have heard of him)

Wineandcupcakes · 12/09/2024 08:12

I suspect the person who said it was the Dalia lama was correct. I wasn’t aware really of the back ground there, but he became the Dalai Lama when he was 5, in 1940. His face is instantly recognisable, normally also due to his attire, it’s not like the pope where it’s a succession of elderly gents for a few years.

now sure again that doesn’t mean every single person across the world, children included know who he is, but very likely he is the one who the most people have heard of or would recognise.

SushiSheep · 12/09/2024 08:14

Ronald Mcdonald

Nobody knows him in India or very few. Only the westernised elite. Music is local

I would disagree that nobody knows him in India.

I can't understand that.

The Beatles were one of the most famous groups of all time.

I went to a really remote place in India, and they had a Beatles tribute act playing.

They all knew who Paul McCartney was. In a mountain village in India

How come some UK poeple dont know who he is?

Have you been to India?

I went to India.

When I was in India, they did know who Paul McCartney and the Beatles were.

They put on a Beatles tribute band night in the bar in India near me

angstypant · 12/09/2024 08:20

Ronaldo. You can go to any backwater in any village in the middle of Indonesia or Africa and people will know of Ronaldo. Ranging from the elderly all the way to the very young.

They wouldn't have a clue who Trump or Taylor Swift are.

The pope would be quite easy, as would Freddie mercury.

And all 4 Beatles.....

I'm still shook by the Dalai llama child sex abuse scandal.

I thought he was one of the good guys

Have you been outside the UK?

I've travelled a lot.

The Beatles and Paul McCartney are known all around the world.

The Beatles were huge worldwide

We are trying to name the most famous alive person in the entire world! I just highly doubt the most famous person in the entire world right now known my multiple generations and multiple nationalities is Paul McCartney. There's no denying he's done a lot in his time but there's definitely people known more widely and more recognisable than him. Very few of my 12-18 students would recognise him, and only some would know what he's famous for.
