Who is the most famous person alive today?

virgocatlover · 11/09/2024 18:22

As in, well known world wide by face or name.

I would say the Queen was up there when she was alive but not sure Charles would make the top 10 now.

Trump, Putin or Elon Musk perhaps?

Obviously there are many famous Hollywood actors and singers but are any the most famous worldwide where English isn't the first language?

Going on a different tack and sorry for the derail but it probably doesn't warrant it's own thread :

A PP mentioned Hitler. Do you think Hitler specifically- the slicked down combover, that stupid little 'tache, the screaming- and the Nazis generally- the salute, that instantly recognisable logo - will always be so famous in the western world as the ultimate bad guys? 80 years later people still talk about "oh he's a little Hitler" "the feminazis" "grammar nazis" - do you think they'll always be in the language or will that fade away? Will the black swastika in a white circle on a red background always evoke an instant, visceral "The Big Baddies...gas chambers...piles of bodies...cities bombed and wrecked....opening scene of Saving Private Ryan...Gestapo terrorising civilians...battle of Stalingrad...Hiroshima (yes they did, they invaded Poland...) " type reaction? Or will it just be oh yeah, we had to do them for history in school, it was boring, we did Henry VIII and that guy who got an arrow in the eye in 1066 as well, we did ox bow lakes in geography. Also, is it just in the West and Russia, and maybe bits of India and Singapore and whatnot that there is that sort of no-nuance Big Bad Guy recognition for Hitler? Axis nations aside, is there a "not our circus, not our monkeys" or "we were technically in it, but it's not that big a deal" feeling amongst neutrals or the rest of the world, or the likes of "swatiska bad, rising sun badder" feeling in China and amongst ANZACS , for example?

I think Taylor will be recognisable across age groups at the moment because she has generated news headlines for her concerts. My parents know who she is but wouldn’t have the foggiest about any other current popstar and my children love her. My kids would not have a clue who Madonna or Paul McCartney are though.

Trump will be very recognisable for all the wrong reasons.

Meghan and Harry are more popular around the world. Section of British population cannot believe they left and are doing well without them. And the world understands why Meghan would be easily demonised.

British media pushes Catherine and William.

Nonsense. Meggie is pretty and has a good smile, but family values are v important around the world ,especially in poorer countries, for obvious reasons. With that definitely comes a put up and shut up philosophy where ones family are concerned. There is 0 chance that the Sussexes represent anything that most people respect. They may pity them though, or think she's pretty.

FWIW, I have some sympathy with MM and how she has alienated all, she had a complex upbringing.

Have you heard of Shah Rukh Khan?
Because he's got over 3bn fans around the world.

You seem to be a fan😅I am from India, cannot stand him. Thete are 1.4 billion in India, not everyone is a fan. So I would guess, about 100 or max 200 million to be his fan. He has 47 million followers on instagram. Amongst Indians, Amitabh Bachchan is more popular. Not sure why Shahrukh khan would be known by people outside India/ Pakistan.

I must admit, I'd never heard of him. But I'm convinced 99% of the replies on this thread are too white-UK-centric (which is a common failing on MN), so I did some searching around for figures likely to be well known in either India or China and the relevant diaspora. He leapt out. Although Ronaldo is looking like the best sporting option so far through a combination of direct appearances as a player plus advertising and sponsorship deals.

soccermum41 · 11/09/2024 22:58

Lionel Messi, Christiano Ronaldo.

When I holidayed in far flung places like Tanzania, Kenya, Peru and I was asked where I was from locals, with barely any English, would say David Beckham (20 years ago!). I've chatted about Mo Salah to Egyptians running a pizzeria in Florence and Becker/Fimino/Fabhino to Brazilians in a German beer festival. So I think football transcends borders class and money in a way that music movies and politicians don't. It's truly an international language.

Yes but rhe question is who is the most famous and not who is the most popular. I think there will be very, very few indians who have not heard of shahrukh khan.

(I'm not a fan either.)

Also, bollywood is quite big in other countries as well not least because there are so many indians abroad (35mio). And in some countries bollywood movies are very popular even among non indians. Middle east, Turkey, Egypt, singapore, Russia (used to not sure about now), Japan and apparently even Nigeria.

According to Alexa the answer is Alan Titchmarsh 🤣

She's now changed her mind to Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

Fucking Ronaldo.

Or cunting Trump.

If Mario's considered I'd vote Mickey Mouse.

HRTQueen · 11/09/2024 23:36

I would say Trump like or dislike him he gets our attention

Putin or Cristiano Ronaldo follow and possibly Elon Musk

The Queen when she was alive

HRTQueen · 11/09/2024 23:42

I agree about footballers being famous everywhere

football is like a religion I’ve been in countries where people want to talk to me about David Beckham (around 2000), Ronaldo and Messi

not sure what gives them the impression I am interested in football but it’s a way people so often connect

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 12/09/2024 00:25

I genuinely had no idea Ronaldo was so famous! I know who he is but I guess I hadn’t really thought about it. You learn something new every day!

Paul McCartney is who I thought of but I do think he’s becoming a lot less relevant than when I was a child (am mid thirties!).

Trump is just so bizarre looking with the weird hair and the orange tan and the angry mean little eyes, I think most people would remember him after being shown a picture of him once so it’s probably him, isn’t it?
