Happy to see Princess Kate doing so well, but...

I'm really glad to see Kate doing so well, and I am glad she has finished chemo looking so healthy and happy. However my sister and I cannot stop laughing at the video Kensington Palace have just released.

We think the video has a striking resemblance to the Twilight films, only warm toned and shorter.

Narration - check
Holding hands while lying down in a meadow - check
Tree climbing - check
Stacks of logs - check
Dramatic sweeping shots of trees - check

I was waiting for William to say something really cringy while giving Kate a piggy back ride.

Bit odd given she’s royal to get that wrong?! Is there no one helping with her PR? I mean isn’t it “the queens English?” So they royal family should get it right?

She hasn’t got it wrong.
”Me” is the object not the subject of the clause.
So many people who should know better get this wrong.

Some people are just so horrible. So many just sucking the joy out of every last bloody thing.

I think that’s rather unfair.

I imagine some people, while being happy for Catherine personally, will not find any particular joy in being reminded of the two tier system that exists in the UK, when it comes to cancer care.

It's fantastic to see that Kate is doing well.
The video is very different to what we usually see from them. But I think it is nice.

Edingril · 09/09/2024 22:01

I do get your point but with the world the way it is I just want to think there is a person with good news that is good and I have no interest in picking that apart

When you have cancer you have a free pass to be as “twee” or “cringey” as you want in my book.
I have cancer myself.
We all cope with things differently.
Incredibly nasty minded OP to start such a post. Let’s see how you deal with things if you are ever in this horrible position.

Well said Mittens and the very best wishes for you for the future 💐

Violetmouse · 09/09/2024 22:04

I haven’t been through cancer myself but my 14 year old daughter has. She commented on how privileged the Royal life is - both after this video and commented on Catherine’s appearance at Wimbledon when she pointed out that Catherine was praised for attending something that hundreds of other patients with cancer would absolutely love to do but never get the chance to. Charities like make a wish try to help young patients fulfil their dreams, but they still never have a hope of accessing everything Kate can, either in terms of support through treatment or access to amazing experiences that give them a bit of hope and enjoyment to keep plodding on.

This is a really surprising thread.

I’m delighted she is recovering and has been able to enjoy the Summer with her family.

She released a really personal message during a difficult period in her life and I’m amazed Mumsnetters can be so unkind to another Mum who must have been so worried about her and her children’s future.

This in spades. Some of the comments are really spiteful.

People have short memories about all the conspiracy awfulness when she hadn’t been seen earlier in the year. This time she releases a video and she’s still wrong according to many on here.

murasaki · 09/09/2024 22:06

It's a bit twee but if she's happy with it, that's all that matters really.

Fizzyrosie · 09/09/2024 22:09

My biggest take away from it was that it is actually really dangerous to climb on stacks of logs like that.

With the massive international reach of this I can't believe this was not picked up on. Feeling sorry for whoever is doing comms at the forestry commission tonight/ tomorrow

I think it will be appreciated by many on a cancer journey.

Well it's very much NOT appreciated by me as I go on my fucking cancer "journey". Cringefest.

I’m torn on this.

I think “the Royals don’t give a fuck what mumsnet says” has been demonstrated to be false. Just look at the reaction last winter when Kate was “missing”, all the threads on Reddit and Mumsnet - which were interesting/compelling enough to filter down to twitter, wider social media and eventually the gutter press. It’s not all fun and games, and who cares what we post. The things posted on Mumsnet and Reddit do influence the wider world, and if it’s compelling enough, can spread far and wide, and absolutely effect the celebrity in question. I can’t imagine all the conspiracy stuff was very nice for Kate when she was just diagnosed.

My point is - I do think the tone of what we say on the internet matters. Celebrities are real people and see this stuff.

It’s fine to say “ah it’s a bit twee, it’s like a Centre Parcs ad”. But the general rule should be: don’t say anything online about someone that you wouldn’t be comfortable saying to their face. And that includes celebrities/royals.

I am under no legal or moral obligation to provide unconditional and unquestioning support and pretty platitudes all other people. For example, I don't want to compliment or support Prince Andrew, do you?

If you are going to hold me to that standard and tone police me, then you should hold everyone else to that standard and tone police them too. Including those on this thread calling others cunts and btches.

Personally I am quite happy to agree to disagree and enjoy reading others opinions, even if they differ from mine. It is one of the ways you can develop critical thinking skills.

As for not saying anything online I wouldn't say in person, what makes you think I wouldn't say this in person. Just because you may be fake, don't assume the rest of us are.

I wish your daughter well and obviously understand that it's so unfair that there is a two tier system and bloody unfair that children such as your daughter have to suffer.
I know it's a cliché, but all the money in the world can't buy good health or happiness. Kate will still have been afraid and afraid for her children, losing your Mother at an early age is devastating, royal or not (Harry and William are living proof of that). I can't comprehend some of the sneery posts above, which aren't lamenting the two tier system (which your daughter rightly points out) but are just an excuse to stick the boot in and laugh at someone who has had a difficult time.

Thank you, @tothelefttotheleft . I hope you're ok now.

Calliopespa · 09/09/2024 22:20

I thought the children were really unaffected and that helped.

I guess they released it because such a fuss got made when they didn’t tell all.

Honestly, if I’d lost someone to cancer I’d have found it upsetting; but then again I’m tired of seeing them criticised for everything they do and I guess they tried to hit the right note. It wasn’t that bad.

Nobody is nasty or joy sucking in finding that video inappropriate or mawkish. I find it gross and insulting to the enormous health inequalities and struggles millions face. Nothing inspirational or touching about it at all. Given that over 30% of people won’t receive the prompt treatment she has it becomes even more ill judged. People who have actually been diagnosed with a detectable cancer not waiting for treatment as a preventative course of action.

Cancer treatment waiting times are the worst ever on record and as a result there will be an enormous amount of people that won’t get this chance to take the simple things for granted again.
Perhaps they should donate a massive amount of their private wealth to tackling cancer for the masses - who don’t have a hope of being cosseted or get to waft around in floaty dresses in a cornfield - and it might be more poignant for the fact that one in two of us face this horror in our lives.

100% this.

I work in palliative care and sadly see so many people who may have had a chance of cure if treatment had been commenced more promptly. A cancer diagnosis is tough irrespective of who you are, but it’s so much more difficult without the privilege of private healthcare. The video is tone deaf in my opinion.

Ghosttofu99 · 09/09/2024 22:23

There are plenty of things to laugh at in life but generally laughing at cancer sufferers is a no from me.

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/09/2024 22:23

I suspect she's far from well.

I think she's very, very brave.

I thought it was nice and I can see why they did it.
DD (21) got Center Parcs vibes and I got 1970s Flake advert vibes

Timotei ad for me. Or those drug ads they have in America ‘ask your doctor about Skibidex and whether it’s right for you’

SoManyTshirts · 09/09/2024 22:26

I was glad to hear that Kate has finished chemo and feeling well enough to go back to work, but now watching the clip I feel less happy. It seems so cheesy, it’s like something you would make for your children to remember you by.

I’m not a great TV/youtube follower so I’m probably just out of touch with current norms. I wish her health and long life.

blackheartsgirl · 09/09/2024 22:27

Bloody hell.
cancer doesn’t discriminate no matter how rich or poor you are. Yes she was lucky that she was privileged enough to have treatment and didn’t have to wait for cancer treatment with the shit show that’s the NHS.Yes she had the help and support from every angle.

cancer is cancer. She still would have felt scared, uncertain, ill, her family would still worry, her children and her husband fearful that they would lose her.

im glad she’s ok, yes the video is a bit twee but i still loved it. If she had released a statement that would have been wrong too. She can’t win.

all the money in the world would not have saved my husband, his cancer was too far gone. I love to hear stories of people who survive cancer no matter who they are (unless you’re a wrong’un!)

Davros · 09/09/2024 22:28

@DefyingGravitas yes! Timotei as well

OminousBirdAWing · 09/09/2024 22:29

Given the choice, I'd vote to get rid of a royal family but I think everything they do is unacceptable to some people, for some reason. If they'd done a written statement it would have just fed the wackos that insist something sinister has happened to her and been covered up. If they'd done a straight to camera speech it would have been too cold/emotional (delete as you see fit). May as well have done something a bit different and be criticised for something new - which is what they've done.
